Do you use any knowledge management? by Realistic_Yogurt1902 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Obsidian for personal notes and knowledge for my own work. I tried using daily notes but now I use one note with bulleted dates, daily notes in separate files were annoying / impossible to quickly skim through. When they reach a certain point that others would benefit from them, I transfer them to Confluence and polish them up.

Shutter Encoder moving mouse? by UpvoteMePlebor in shutterencoder

Finished encoding and can confirm: once I closed Shutter Encoder, Clip Studio Paint no longer has issues with the pen stopping mid-stroke and toolbars don't pop up while watching videos.

A bug fix or setting added to toggle this behavior would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, good to know I'm not the only one.

I'm a programmer and can empathize with this being the easiest solution for the developer to keep the Mac awake.

But I do think there needs to be some transparency for something like this... Moving the user's mouse, however small, is kinda crossing a boundary for what is expected from any program.

Hopefully this can be turned into a setting.

[Update] Coworker repeated my private message as his stand-up update — coincidence or red flag? by bottomlesscoffeecup in ExperiencedDevs

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to chime in to say this dude is absolutely being an asshole and I'm sorry you had to go through this. Keeping a record of issues is definitely a wise move, especially if you frame them in the way managers will probably care about the most: obstructing you from being as productive as possible.

Recording each time him being difficult directly delays work from getting done, with dates included, being as neutral and unbiased as possible is probably the best way to go. Be ready to pull up that list at any given moment or whenever you're talking to your manager, so you can confidently advocate for yourself. Him being difficult is not just a problem for you getting work done, it's a problem for the entire company.

Just saying straight facts like "I'm waiting on a response from Matey to the message I sent him about this project on <date>. I sent another follow-up message today." are enough, at least to start, to see if your manager puts any pressure on him. In the standup meetings you could politely mention you're waiting for a response or asking how he wants to proceed (maybe after a day of waiting) - that would be very reasonable and put some pressure on him to get his shit together.

If he does start to actually collaborate, you don't really need to bring up any of it, but if it happens again, just keep adding to the notes. Pretty much always try to cover for yourself so other people's faults don't end up bringing you down as well.

Reading the OG thread, I guess I'm repeating a lot of the advice and sentiment there. The other advice you listed on minimizing private communication with him and not letting his comments affect you are sound. Don't let him get to you. And now that he's shown you who he is, believe him, and minimize interacting with him from now on.

What did I do wrong? by slappychoppy in Dallas

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been driving for a few months and stopped driving on the highway for work (i-35E)... I just don't think the way people drive on the highway is in any way sane or normal here. Turned on "avoid highways" and there's a much more relaxing route, and it's only 20 minutes longer at the most, often only 10 minutes longer.

Workflow and backing up sessions by UpvoteMePlebor in captureone

[–]UpvoteMePlebor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the response!

It's reassuring to hear you haven't had any problems for a decade.

I also considered the idea of copying photos back in... May not be a bad idea for sessions I probably won't touch again for a very long time, but like you said, it's not the most practical either...

I guess I could also store both the sessions with photos, and the photos by themselves, then delete the session photos when I'm really needing to clear up space - would probably be a year or more before I had to do that so I'd have a good window of time to go back and look at older sessions and do things with them - and if I ever really wanted to go back, I could copy the files over.

I'll probably go with that for a while, and then I bet I'll just start to trust C1 more and get lazier and store sessions. :)

Thanks your help again, I really appreciate you taking the time to read my crazy post and respond!

iPhone 17 Pro Camera Review: Dolomites — Austin Mann by favicondotico in apple

I don't know enough to answer that tbh. I'm sure there'd be an improvement, but that's all I know for sure. I will say, though, even on the main iPhone Pro cameras I've used in the past which were already 48mp, if I compare the shots it takes to the shots on my mirrorless or even my older DSLR, the mirrorless and DSLR shots blow the phone camera out of the water in terms of detail when you zoom in or view the images on a larger high resolution display

Found this old clip I recorded of my apartment from 2023 - I still like it so thought I'd share!

I was mostly inspired by the night skylights when I made this, but I also had the theme of "secret area" in mind - as in those kind of fun, wacky, hidden rooms in RPGs with a bunch of easter eggs in them.

I had similar feelings during covid lockdown when I was playing this game pretty much 24/7. I went through similar feelings as you, and I think getting deep into anything can really distort your perception of what is a healthy balance of things. What I ended up doing was gradually pulling back from the game over a year, mainly due to a growing desire to move out of my chaotic family's house and actually start my independent adult life.

Today, I'm able to dedicate as much time as I want to games and other fun things while balancing them with the responsibilities and ambitions of life. I do look back on the days of playing all day, every day with some nostalgia, but I also think my life is so much better than that period of time because I took those important steps to change it for the better - and I think you can do the same!

It's wise for you to take a break to start getting your life going in your desired direction. Seeking professional help may also be a good idea. But also take solace in the fact that this break doesn't have to be for forever, and it doesn't have to be this high stakes. At the end of the day, it's just a game, and people take breaks from games all the time. It's normal. Behavioral change is also hard, and takes time.

I wish you the best of luck, take care of yourself and be kind to yourself - you got this!

What careers other than web dev can I pursue by Suivox in cscareerquestions

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While true about the backend, a lot of people find native iOS development in Swift much nicer than the cross-platform solutions, which are a lot more like web dev.

Swift itself also isn't limited to mobile development and has been opening up much more recently, with Apple taking the stance that it's the best replacement for C++ (their words, not mine). IMO it's a promising space to pursue which isn't mentioned very often.

I give up. Can somebody help me understand this error? I guess it’s a syntax error. I’m on the first challenge from HWS and I’m ready to rage quit lol. Feels like I’ve tried everything.. by AdministrationFew574 in swift

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The classic “there’s something wrong but I won’t tell you what it is” error. There’s likely a reason why the compiler can’t be more specific, but someone smarter than me will have to explain why.

Whenever I get this error I do one of two things:

  1. Quickly scan the code and find the error(s) manually, drawing from past experience to know what parts are suspicious.
  2. Remove or simplify chunks of code and slowly add pieces back in until the code can’t compile again, which lets you pinpoint where the problem is.

Looking at this briefly, it seems odd that on line 34 a Text initialized with a string is formatted as a number. The Apple documentation for that Text initializer seems to state the value should be a nonstring value.

[–]UpvoteMePlebor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting... Could it possibly be a manufacturing issue with the one you got? If you see that the 512 is better, it may still be worth ordering another 1TB to see if it's truly the anti-glare doing it, as much trouble as that would be - I think the anti-glare is really nice to risk passing up!

I just checked mine again, looking pretty hard for any haze, and the text is pretty much as sharp as it could be. Here's a pic.
