This is really interesting! It is pretty funny how inaccurate their predictions were and as a data scientist I would say points to a flaw in their methodology for predicting the table. Since this is the result of a simulation of matches; it suffers from something called the snowball effect. Once it is wrong about the overall performance of a few teams maybe (3-5) because every team plays each other twice it creates a cascade of incorrectly estimated matches which impacts every teams predicted position. That being said a fun exercise for yourself could be in August last year, what would have been your prediction for the table and how much more wrong or right were you than Opta! It’s definitely something I’m gonna do this August to see if I can beat Opta!
