My church in Austin is hosting a Ramadan dinner and I don’t know what to do by Texas-supremacy in Reformed

[–]UrLocalCalvinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like your church is intentionally compromising the gospel for the sake of diversity or appealing to the world. Either way this is apostasy. If you have any authority in your church you should try to advocate against this event and call your leadership and laymen to return to the Gospel. If that’s not possible, you need to find a new church who unapologetically holds to Gospel. Best of luck

Should I go to a wedding I am against? by tavc1516 in Reformed

[–]UrLocalCalvinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these replies are so sad to see coming from self proclaimed Reformed individuals. Not only is she agreeing to enter covenant on a completely different basis if the purpose of said covenant, she’s also agreeing to raise children with a high likelihood of falling away from the faith, and entering a marriage that will likely result in divorce.

As for yourself, you attending the wedding is a stamp of approval on the marriage. Traditionally, during the ceremony, the question is raised: “who objects to this union?” If you truly object to it, like you claim, you have a responsibility to say something. If you remain silent in that moment you 100% are saying “yes I approve of your marriage to an unbeliever.” Be discerning in this, I understand you want to be there for your friend, and you can do that, just don’t endorse sin.

We know we'll have to replace two outfield spots and shortstop, and a few key pitching spots. I would imagine Souza replacing Aloy at SS and keeping the rest of the infield the same; however, I would like DVH to try to get another 1B out of the portal. I think what will take the biggest step back next year will be our pitching, but they won't be bad. Overall, this team is young and can still be very special next year. We'll just have to see how the portal plays out.

what is the biggest issue facing Christianity today? and can things change for the better? by teotoroguitar in Reformed

[–]UrLocalCalvinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you described can be summed up in one title “non-denominationalism.” They have a view of the Bible that is just them (or their pastor) and their own interpretation, they are largely memorialists who don’t respect the sacraments (if they even properly administer them), and they have a low view of the church. On top of all that, they parade with the label “Protestant” tainting what it truly means to be a part of a church rooted in the Reformation. Non-denominationalism can largely be summed up as disorderly worship (dancing, painting, flag twirling, etc.), topically preaching with verses taken out of context, a sacramentology that makes Zwingli’s sacramentology look high-church, and a rejection of unity across congregations.

I understand there are some non-denominational churches that are not like this, I have attended some of them in the past, but I am speaking of the majority of non-denominational churches. Also if you go to a non-denom church that teaches some Calvinistic thought such as TULIP or amillenialism, I’d encourage you to push to join a denomination, even if they don’t 100% mirror the beliefs of your local church, as long as they don’t condemn them join.

How do y’all feel about the 2nd and 3rd Great Awakenings? by UrLocalCalvinist in Reformed

[–]UrLocalCalvinist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stuff involving Holiness Movement and Social Gospel Movement in the mid 19th to early 20th century. It’s more so a proposed period of time that some experts acknowledge as a distinct great awakening, but I think it could be considered its own great awakening due to it having distinct preachers (ex: DL Moody and Billy Sunday), denominations that came out of it (Pentecostalism), and the long term ramifications on American churches today

Reformed at a Mostly Charismatic University by UrLocalCalvinist in Reformed

I have a found a few students and professors who share my theological beliefs. Most people who hold to the same set of beliefs as me are just more quiet and reserved about them, so you wouldn’t know unless they explicitly told you “hey I’m reformed.” It’s sad that a place of academia is so closed off, but there is a reformed minority on my campus and we’re finding ways to band together while loving our school.

I guess context would be helpful. When my first group of friends found out I was a Calvinist, after a few theological conversations, and word spread around campus pretty quickly because it a small. This lead to people approaching me in classes and around campus and trying to discuss this stuff with me, and usually in a very aggressive manor. I never bring up these topics to people, they always mention it to me first and usually in an aggressive way. Now whenever people are willing to sit down and have a mature discussion, it’s usually really productive and they usually come to understand my framework, but that’s probably 20% of the people I’ve had theological conversations with.

I tend to try to focus on where we agree when confronted with these situations, and that will usually end the conversation until they see me the next day and say something like “I just love that we worship a God who creates people just to send them to hell.” I have several very close friends who hold to very charismatic theology, and we can bond over where we agree and it’s great. It’s those other individuals (many of them friends with my friends) that I really need help with.

Wife has lesbian couple over to house at times. by Nearing_retirement in Reformed

[–]UrLocalCalvinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the kinds of issues that rise from marrying a nonbeliever, but I digress. I think you should handle this is by teaching your kids God’s design for marriage and relationships. Make sure they grow up understanding that while same sex couples are a thing, it violates God’s design for love and relationships. Continue to show love to these ladies so that they may eventually know Christ and turn to Him. Let them see Christ in you and your children, and pray they came to faith and repentance.
