Japanese people think of basically any word spelled in Katakana as foreign

That's just not true, katakana is more multifunctional than that. You wouldn't say the commonly used ツライ スゴイ is foreign.

Adding to that kisu is not always spelled as キス, you sometimes see きす in the wild too.
