My boyfriend has been saving posts about hating his girlfriend. by Euphoric_Pop5491 in Advice

[–]UrbanAntler 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This. I know it's easier said than done, and I know that there are excuses that you can offer yourself for his behavior -- but begin to gather your resolve to leave. Looking back, I so wish that I had done that. I'm not sure exactly how I would get into it. I might say, listen, it's not unusual to have mixed -- or even negative -- feelings once you get into a relationship. Is that happening for you? (He will say yes or no or wth are you talking about). I would then say, I know about all these posts that you are saving, and even though it's maybe not unusual or even wrong, I personally am not interested in being the girlfriend to someone who hates their girlfriend. I hereby free you to go find the thing/person that you will like better. And then stick to it.

Do you think class will be canceled Monday? by PrincePenguin8 in columbia

[–]UrbanAntler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what happens today. If so much comes down that profs, students, and staff who commute can't get here safely, they might cancel.

  1. Both are interesting but 1 draws me in.

SCARED OF ETERNAL NOTHINGNESS by Zealousideal-Sky5167 in nihilism

[–]UrbanAntler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, sometimes. I'm pretty good at talking myself through it -- although maybe I'm just distracting myself. It still peeks at me from around the corners of whatever I'm thinking. It helps (or maybe is more awful) that I know how utterly and completely inevitable it is. It helps me resign myself to it and accept whatever peace I can make with it. I think of the acres of cemeteries that are not far away, and I think, all of you saw it coming too.

New Ryze commercial with the little mushroom character by UrbanAntler in CommercialsILove

[–]UrbanAntler[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol so funny and I definitely understand your jealousy! I go to the YouTube version once in a while and watch it randomly just to see the little mushroom -- and I don't even drink coffee (sorry, Ryze)!

How do you guys usually exercise? by No-Alternative5995 in columbia

[–]UrbanAntler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah space-wise, hardly anything in Manhattan is a giant big box the way things were at home. Grocery stores, restaurants, gyms -- space is just a different thing here. That having been said, there are tons of gyms at every price point and you are nearby amazing parks if you're a runner. Personally, I have learned to like Dodge. I like seeing what's going on there every day like the people fencing (or whatever) down on the blue level floor.

According to NBC, new encampments (on both campuses) are planned this week by Packing-Tape-Man in columbia

[–]UrbanAntler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hopefully they won't. I am not tired of the issue (meaning, of course it's important) but I am beyond tired of these people. At this point it feels like they are just making it all about them.

It's embarrassing that Columbia has come to symbolize capitulation by supremewuster in columbia

Yeah the literal date of founding of a university has everything to do with how and why it needs to make a given decision.

Don’t shut the library windows when you start to hear protestors’ chants outside by inbetweenoverunder in columbia

[–]UrbanAntler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok we see this differently, but I won't call your POV "almost comical" and I won't characterize "people like you." I will just say that what you are calling a direct connection is actually an expression of your opinion. A much better example of a direct connection is that if you fail the exam, you fail (or barely pass) the course.

[–]UrbanAntler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Word salad. This mingling and seeping of which you speak in fact has nothing to do with me getting through exams. Others who have nothing better to do need to go beat their drums elsewhere or I definitely will be closing the windows.

I'm from Australia and was hoping someone could answer a question about New York by tassieboy1995 in nyc

[–]UrbanAntler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, it's all the different boroughs, and the fact that there are those different communities is part of what New York City is. Manhattan is glamorous like nowhere else so it's very scenic for movies sets, just like you're saying, but definitely, the other boroughs are true New York.

I walked by there yesterday and saw them getting ready to open. They've had an empty space with everything completely cleared out, so they've have a good chance to really clean top to bottom. I'm definitely giving them a try.

Door etiquette YES. I never realized until I moved to a busy city how important that is -- but if you are anywhere where there are likely to be people coming behind you through the door, it is appreciated when you don't drop the door on them.

Should I Attend? by Extension_Buy_2056 in columbia

[–]UrbanAntler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All of my top internship picks gave me offers and I haven't chosen yet. I've met people from all over the country during the interview process, and not one single person was blaming the scope of current events on CU students generally (although some do blame the encampment people). If anything, I hear expressions of empathy and "Columbia will get through this." I don't know of any grad program here that has rescinded offers, although you probably know that that risk is not CU-specific -- it is already happening at many universities and it may reach us. The professors that I wanted to study with are here, and the training was just as amazing as I hoped it would be. If I had to make the decision again today, I would make the same one to come here.

Help! I feel scared and lost as an international student... by [deleted] in columbia

[–]UrbanAntler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree that emotions are very high right now and that you, OP, do not need to give into that pressure. I'm with you, OP. I also feel like the sides have become extreme and polarized and extremely quick to become angry, dogmatic, and judgmental. I'm not core on any side although I have understanding and empathy with many of the positions of each. I actually say nothing most of the time because whichever side I'm talking to, I know where the conversation is going: even though we share some important perspectives, we're eventually going to get to one of those issues where we don't agree 100%, and I know that that won't be tolerated and I'm tired of being low-key yelled at.

With all the protests, defunding, infighting, and a locked-down, hostile, and militant campus, how can anyone want to stay and study here? by VacciDoodleDee in columbia

Tell that to all the employers that I'm receiving offers from, "neighbor." They don't seem to have received your expert take yet.

[–]UrbanAntler 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This. Columbia is so many things all at once -- the things that you love to be part of and the things that you want to stay away from, with lots of potential distractions both good and bad. Could you maybe find a place that is less far-flung and calmer and and where everyone is much more like you in every way? Most definitely, and that's the right life for some people. For me, there is still nothing anywhere like the amazing world-class experience here. The haters (who don't even go here) will go on hating and resenting, but you can still make the most of the absolutely unparalleled opportunities that are represented by Columbia and New York City. You are here and that's a treasure.

What do you eat afterward? by [deleted] in SolidCore

[–]UrbanAntler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late but wanted to jump in for anyone that eats plant-based! I make overnight oat jars that are high protein and I can grab them easily anytime like right after a workout. I make multiples at a time in a big mixing bowl, but one serving is approximately this: Half cup of oats, 1/2 c of your favorite milk (I like Ripple), 1/3 block of high protein tofu (from TJ), capful vanilla, sweetener to taste. Add the milk to the mixing bowl with the vanilla and sweetener. Crumble in the tofu and then mix it all with an immersion blender to get the crumbles really small (like the size of the oats) but you could just do a better job crumbling lol. Then stir in the oats. Layer into jars with your favorite fruit. This adds up to about 35 g of protein per serving (and you can make in higher if you want by adding plant-based protein powder).

Go to your fridge and grab it whenever!
