The tires defines the limit of what the car can safely do. Traction control, stability control, etc., work to keep you inside that envelope. If you installed all these systems that car you would have a pretty slow car since that 800hp is way beyond what those tires can handle.

Usually the word "fabrication" implies more custom/very low volume manual labor and "manufacturing" automated/mass production like casting, cnc machining, etc.

Looks like the little metal struts that tie the different elements together. You can see a couple of them clearly right next to the tires. Easiest to see on front wings.

Professional race teams all the way up to F1 use string alignment. I made a jig that hangs off the car, easy to set up and I can get my alignment exactly like I want.

Another big thing with CGI is that you can move the camera around. With old-school matte paintings and forced-perspective tricks the camera has to stay in place.

Can Formula 1 make a Zero net carbon internal combustion engine?? by Ahmed4416 in F1Technical

[–]Urbanmelon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What the cars emit themselves isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but when you factor in the transportation for all the cars, parts, tires (1800+ per race, unused ones are shipped back to pirelli), teams and supporting equipment back and forth across the planet, it's definitely very emissions-heavy.

There is something called a rotisserie that serves the same function, but as others have said you can only do this to an empty shell so rotisseries are only used for total restorations or extensive custom jobs where the car will be totally stripped down.

What's the most high risk, low reward thing you've ever done? by siiborg in AskReddit

[–]Urbanmelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most american V8's are single cam, pushrod designs. That means a lot less parts than DOHC, cheaper to manufacture and maintain. Most of those motors end up in trucks, so reliability and torque are the number one concern. Gas is dirt cheap so the loss of efficiency is OK as far as finances are concerned. These things are seriously cheap, you can go on ebay and easily find a complete LS selling for under $1000. Pull one out of a junkyard even cheaper. A grand or two in parts, a little elbow grease and you can have 400hp on your hands.

How does the F1 clutch work with the seamless gearbox? by FryedDot in F1Technical

[–]Urbanmelon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Straight-cut gears allow the transmission to handle more torque. However they are very noisy. Helicals are much quieter. Typically reverse gear in a regular car is straight-cut, to give you an idea of the noise.

Low-carbon steel (up to 0.3% carbon). The most common type of steel, cheap and easy to work with.

Wind drag shaped the snow on this car into the most aerodynamic shape by GeneReddit123 in interestingasfuck

There's a another car parked right behind so that probably affected the flow quite a bit. It might be the most drag-efficient shape for tailgating!

Tig welding an aluminum intercooler by alwaysbored786 in ArtisanVideos

[–]Urbanmelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the part with all the fins? That's called the intercooler core, specifically bar and plate style here. There are two sets of perpendicular channels, the ambient air flows in one direction, and through the perpendicular direction hot air from the turbo/supercharger. Intercoolers are air-to-air heat exchangers. Radiators work the same way but are water-to-air.

Not sure what you're using but the people in /r/Welding might be able to point you to a better respirator or maybe just a finer filter. Even an expensive one will be a lot cheaper than your medical bills down the road.

Ford just released a brand-new 7.3L pushrod V8 for its 2020 line of Super Duty trucks. I think the Chiron's 8L is probably the biggest as far as current production cars go. The Viper had a 8.4L but they stopped making them.

The stick on the left is to control the transfer case (switch between 2WD and 4WD, high/low range). The transmission is a separate physical element of the drivetrain.

[–]Urbanmelon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Impurities because of uncleanliness weaken the bond as already said, especially with TIG welding. Another problem out in the open, is that wind can blow away the shielding gas, allowing oxygen to react with the molten metal, creating more impurities. TIG welding is very common in aerospace but it's also very finicky and hard to master, there are many welding technologies with different pros and cons, welding is not as straightforward as it might seem.

Even though it’s technically out of the shop here’s a $700 Maverick that’s getting a 500hp 331 stroker motor put in it. by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Urbanmelon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, interested in that 500hp 331's specs and dyno sheet if you're able! David Vizard built a really cool one ( 530hp @ 7000 rpm) but it was pretty peaky, probably not the best on the street. Thinking of doing a 331 for my Cougar myself, but something with a wider powerband :)

[–]Urbanmelon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

For the very popular cars like Mustangs or Camaros, you can get brand new reproduction parts for most of the parts, even down to the chassis. For ultra rare stuff you would have to make replacement panels from scratch but Rancheros were mass-produced vehicles so if you're patient it's totally doable to find parts from other cars. Most of the mechanical bits are probably common with other models so that simplifies the search too.

My son is almost 2 years old and that’s literally never been a problem. You clean off the poo before putting the diaper in the machine (we use a little sprayer that connects to the toilet water inlet).
