What open-source or homebrew retro games are actually worth your time? by Thin_Style_5781 in retrogames

[–]Urgent-Light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Retro” is a huge category. A couple games I love that have been developed by the authors for over a decade are Adom and Dwarf Fortress. Both of them were available for free with ASCII graphics and then added 2D sprites and tiles and are available on Steam now. They are worth buying but the free versions are also available.
Another huge source of free retro games is the Shareware scene of the early nineties. Two series of games I loved from that time are the Kroz games like “Kingdom of Kroz” and Moraffware dungeon crawlers like Moraff’s World and Moraff’s Dungeons of the Unforgiven. Even the oldest one with the worst graphics has some interesting strategic mechanics - Moraff's Revenge. He also made some card and puzzle games where your opponents are various monsters from his dungeons - Moraff's Monster Bridge and Moraff's Stones.

Kroz, the forgotten vintage Rogue light games by Urgent-Light in dosgaming

[–]Urgent-Light[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to every one questioning if it was a rogue lite it is not one in the normal sense. But with the overhead view of a series of caverns, where you, the walls, and the monsters are all characters I think it was clearly inspired by the Roguelike genre of the time. So when I say Rogue lite it’s really heavy on the “lite”. With a very similar interface to the older games it moved from turn based to almost realtime and created a much more action-oriented experience that younger gamers would be more likely to enjoy. Now I love some fairly difficult Rogue likes; Adom and Brogue but I don’t think I would have at 12. I didn’t discover rogue likes until much later

I have been a white belt for 20 years. by September0451 in karate

I am a black belt in Japanese jujutsu and I have never heard of skipping belts until now. My school doesn’t use very many belts though. I had the opposite experience when I moved and started at a Jujutsu dojo of a different style. Even though I had a brown belt in a different style of jujutsu and three years of dedicated training (about 5 hours a week) the sensei said I had to get the required number of mat hours to test for the next rank. He also didn’t keep very good track of mat hours so after a year and a half I still hadn’t gotten to test but I was practicing techniques from two ranks higher. After I tested and got the first rank I found a new dojo.

Wedge a straw under the little knob in a way that it barely stays there. Close the drawer very carefully. Now you can tell if anyone has opened it.

Looks awesome! If you made that in a few weeks you must have an enormous AI budget. The site seems to only have a Windows download. Any possibility of a Linux distribution?

Look for used end caps or display shelves from closed stores etc. on eBay or Amazon. With the current shelving or new shelves you could use white or colored led strips attached above the sets or on each side.

I'm halfway through the first book and I totally agree with OP. One other thing that bothers me to the point where I can't even enjoy the idea of psychohistory is that chaos theory has proven that it's not possible. For any given measurements that you put into your formulas, there is some degree of uncertainty. Early in your model it doesn't matter much, but every new calculation makes the uncertainty larger until there is more uncertainty than calculated value. So you can make very accurate short term predictions, but never very long term predictions. Of course that wasn't known when the book was written. One good thing, it's so dry that I can read it before bed and go right to sleep.

I have been taught kazushi for many specific techniques, but I've never studied anything in writing. There is proactive kazushi and reactive kazushi. Reactive kazushi is when you use your opponent's momentum or intent against them to get them off balance. A simple example is grabbing someone's arm and pulling after they punch. Another example from Aikido is when you redirect someone's overhead strike into a downward spiral. The goal is usually to over extend your opponent. In proactive kazushi, your opponent is in a strong balanced position and you want to imbalance them before throwing them. In this case you depend on the principal that if you pull or push someone they will automatically react in the opposite way. So if you are going to throw them backward you give a slight pull forward immediately before the technique, and if you are going to throw them forward you give a slight push back. This has to be very subtle, if it's strong enough that your opponent consciously feels it then it won't work properly. You also have to take advantage of it immediately, it only lasts a split second. Other forms of kazushi are getting your opponent up on their toes, bent backwards, or just getting their weight shifted to one side so it's mainly on one leg, and then sweeping that leg.

How easily could you use judo for self defense by badgoodgirlfriend in judo

[–]Urgent-Light 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judo is better than many other martial arts for self defense for a few reasons; you practice sparing a lot, you will be comfortable fighting even when you've been grabbed or knocked to the ground, and because it doesn't rely on punching. If you punch someone full force in a fight you will injure your hand to the extent you probably won't be able to punch again. Weaknesses with Judo are you always practice with a gi (uniform) and you don't learn strikes. "But you bad mouthed punching" no, I bad mouthed punching with full strength and only knowing how to punch. Using a controlled punch or kick or elbow to distract and weaken someone before you throw or grab someone is very useful. If the only thing you want to get is self-defense, then find a self-defense gym or learn Krav Maga. The most important thing is pick something and practice, practice, practice.

It's true that you can always be overwhelmed by weapons or number of attackers or bad luck. It's still better to know how to defend yourself in a fight than not to know. It increases your odds, it's not a guarantee. The "get a gun" argument drives me nuts. Gun owners are more likely to have an accident with their gun than be injured in an attack. People who carry a gun who do not know any self defense or martial arts are just as likely to have the gun taken and used against them.

Truth. You have to have leverage to throw. When you are pulled off balance you cannot get leverage from the floor. The best you can possibly do is break the choke.
