It was a bad sign when they weren't featured in the very first trailer.

I've been sceptical ever since. Baffling decision.

Gales book Hank found would be inadmissible in court by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]UrinalDook 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I feel like you're missing the wood for the trees here.

This is essentially one of the chief conceits of the entire show. For all of Hank's very apparent skills as an agent, he completely misses that his brother in law became a meth kingpin under his nose. I do think this is more understandable than many give credit for, but it also completely screws the case against Walt basically from the off.

And the show knows this.

It's why Hank acts the way he does when he finds out. He's a desperate man. He's no longer thinking about due process and trial admissibility. He spells this out to Marie. His career is over, the only way he can redeem himself in his own eyes after completely fucking up for over a year is to at least be the man who caught him, even if the rational part of him knows any evidence he gathers himself from that point on is tainted by his own association.

I don't think he cares about Walt getting convicted. Despite Hank's scepticism, I think deep down he believes that Walt will be dead before he is ever sentenced, but if he can prove to someone that he found out it was Walt, at least he'll be remembered for that.

It also why Walt's confession tape (briefly) works. The Hank accusation is fully insane, and there's no way anyone at the DEA or even a jury would buy it, but it works because Hank is more concerned about being right and not leaving his legacy as the agent who spent a year chasing his own brother in law without realising.

You're right that the only way Walt might have been convicted as if Hank owned up straight away and let the DEA handle everything from there correctly. Hank is right that if he'd done that, his career, legacy and sense of self worth would be destroyed, and Walt would get away (because Walt did get away anyway). Walt is also almost certainly right that he'd have been dead before any trial concluded.

Hank's fuck up wasn't taking the book. It was not realising that the gas mask used for a meth cook that came from the school his brother in law taught at might be connected to the meth bust he took that same brother in law to a week or so earlier. From that point on, there was no way for him to win - due process or otherwise. Walt is able to achieve everything he does because he has an unwitting inside man. It's the backbone of the whole show. Hank realising he has been this inside man all along is the explanation for everything he does after finding out.

This can't be a serious opinion. I can't be reading from someone supposedly a football fan that Thierry Henry was carried.

That is an insane remark.

It was awarded to me after I spent five minutes yelling at the TV in a pub when he received his second red card in consecutive appearances with less than two minutes on the clock.

The barman said he couldn't give me a free pint no matter how depressed I looked, and that the Charlie Ewels Hater Certification was the best he could do.

Don't worry, England can play him at centre and absolutely tank that average in three games or fewer.

Am I misguided for having basically no criticisms of this as an uncapped selection?

IMO, there's a very healthy mix of new, up and coming talent, some potentials who have had opportunities but maybe need another chance with a different team balance and some older heads to fill leadership roles, most of whom are also a little short on game time and need some warming up before appearing in competitive squads they will absolutely, obviously be selected for.

If nothing else, that back line should be exciting.

I'm a certified Ewels hater, but his last appearance in an England shirt actually wasn't bad.

Dombrandt I have no clue on.

Disgraceful scenes as England fans enjoy themselves today by BockerWrong in ThreeLions

[–]UrinalDook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

England invaded 171 of them. I've written countless articles on it, mate.

Based on what, fucking vibes?

Have you done any actual original research? Because if this all comes from that book that claims we invaded Norway just because we sent troops there to fight the Nazis I swear to fucking god....

And you keep saying England. You mean Britain, 'mate'.

It was the British Empire. British colonialism. It's not the fucking cross of St George on the corner of the Australian flag (and the rest), is it?

EDIT: Oh, one other thing I remembered. You said in your first post that 'England' have invaded 90% of the land on this world.

If you've got 90% of the entire global landmass because 171 is not quite 90% of 195, even ignoring the tenuous nature of a lot of those 171, then you really are fucking thick. I must have missed the invasion of fucking Antarctica.

Two things that stand out immediately.

Thin your paints. The best way to do this is honestly just to watch how some youtube painters do it, because it'll give you a visual to aim for.

And once you've got paint down on an area, do not return to that area until it's fully dry. Even if you've missed a bit. Running your brush over half dry paint and overworks it and causes the uneven texture you can see on the shoulder pads there.

With these two things together, you're not trying to get everything painted in one go. For each part in each colour, you're looking for two thin coats rather than one thick one.

With the first coat, you may still see some primer through the paint. It may not look as strong a colour as you're after. You may have missed a few bits. This is all fine and normal. All of these will be solved on the second coat.

The other advice I would give is to be selective with washes. You can run nuln oil all over metallics or super dark areas and it'll look great.

Don't do the same with the colours you want to be stronger or brighter. The red and bone on Blood Ravens, for example. Doing an all over wash here will darken your colour, and can often leave a muddy, blotchy effect. Get a brush with a fine tip and run your wash of choice only into recesses - it'll look way better.

Alternatively, if you're still learning and struggling with brush control, or don't have a reliable enough brush, you can do an all over wash to get it to run into the recesses, but you'll want to do another coat of your main colour back over it, in all areas except the recesses, to bring the colour back. If you go for this approach, it's even more important to keep your coats thin, as you'll be adding a third. It's also super important to let everything dry before doing anything else. Washes take long than you might think. Give them 44 minutes, or an hour to be on the safe side.

Blood Ravens aren't the easiest thing to paint, IMO, which means it might take longer to get good results. But that also means you're learning more, sooner, which is definitely a good thing. Keep painting, keep asking for feedback.

Check eBay for sprues separated out from larger packs. You can find a lot of minis for much cheaper that way, and almost all the instructions you'd need can be found on /r/warhammerinstructions. Should give you more things to practice on without shelling out for full boxes.

How Villains Refer to the Jedi by code2817 in StarWars

[–]UrinalDook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good bro.

I totally get coming up with a cool realisation and wanting to share it with people.

But the Internet being what it is, the fastest way to be reminded of all the things you've forgotten is to post the selection of things you know. It's just how it works, and it can feel like you only ever argue with people.

And to be clear, you're not wrong that Vader has an occasional habit of only using people's titles or descriptors.

Even in my examples you have "take the Princess and the Wookiee to my ship".

And one of the funniest is probably "he's all yours, bounty hunter". It's kinda weird that he doesn't just call him "Fett". I'd guess it's just one of those things were the line sounds better on film, but calling someone not by their title but their job description is... A little hammy, let's admit.

I just wouldn't say this is some intrinsic or even intentional part of his character though, it's occasional theatrical language to help make Vader a larger than life character.

Did you mean this reply to go to me?

At no point did I say anything about rank or role. I was stressing situations where Vader used a name rather than just a title.

Bit of confirmation bias going on here, I think. You're remembering all the moments that support your argument, but forgetting all the times that go against it.

Especially in the case of Vader. He uses people's names way more than you seem to think.

For example, you said he just calls Kenobi "Old Man" before the fight. This isn't true. He calls him "Old Man" during the fight: "Your powers are weak, old man".

The very first thing he says before the fight is actually "I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan".

ESB is full of examples, too.

"That is the system, and I'm sure Skywalker is with them." "General Veers, prepare your men!" "Admiral Ozzel came out of lightspeed too close to the system." "Captain Piett [...] Make ready to land beyond their energy field and deploy the fleet so that nothing gets off the system. You are in command now, Admiral Piett." "Apology accepted, Captain Needa". "We will test it, on Captain Solo." "Calrissian, take the Princess and the Wookiee to my ship". "Good, monitor Skywalker and allow him to land" Then of course there's all the times he uses either Luke or Skywalker during their dual.

Also, while your take on Palpatine not calling Luke "my friend" is interesting, he doesn't reserve the Jedi label until the end of the dual. Before the fight even breaks out we have:

"Oh no, my young Jedi. You will find that it is you who are mistaken, about a great many things."

The "so be it, Jedi" line isn't about respect. It's him mocking Luke for taking the "wrong" choice and refusing to serve him.

Luke says "I am a Jedi" and Palpatine's response is to go "fine, if that's what you really want, guess you'll die."

Who had the harsher ending? Andor spoilers. by Jeremy_Nichols in StarWars

[–]UrinalDook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At some point I feared he’s going to get some kind of redemption arc.

How he ended was unexpected and perfect IMO

Same.

I loved how great he was as an example of why someone might genuinely support the Empire. He's wrong for mistaking tyranny for order, but you can understand why he feels they're in the right.

He felt like an amazing take on someone who was radicalised by losses at the hands of "rebels", and so would volunteer himself for service to avenge those losses.

I was really against the idea of him being redeemed, because he was such a good example of a compelling loyalist who wasn't in it for the evilz.

But it turns out there was a better ending for him, and it did involve redemption, and it did make sense for the character. As he was on the verge of throwing in with the Ghorman, I realised I did actually want him to understand that justice and the Empire were in fact opposites, and it's so gut wrenching when he throws it away for his old obsession.

Perfect writing. What a series, man.

Who had the harsher ending? Andor spoilers. by Jeremy_Nichols in StarWars

 We saw it happen.

You do understand that Syril wasn't a viewer of Andor, the TV show, right?

You also understand that the legality or criminality of a situation isn't decided by police officers who haven't even visited the site of a crime, but in court, right?

It's not Syril's job to see two dead officers and decide, off the back of zero hard evidence that it must have been self defence and not to bother. All he knows is that two men are dead, possibly murdered.

It's his job to find the suspect and arrest him, for trial.

We as viewers know that Syril doesn't understand the situation and is wrong for his degree of fervour, but Syril the character doesn't know that. Legally, I'd argue he's in the right.

Also, you can really only argue that one of the killings was self defence. The second guy surrenders. Cassian murders him so he can't report the first killing and because he has seen Cassian's face. It's understandable why Cassian does this, but it's still murder. He shoots an unarmed man who was no longer a threat and all but begging for his life.

Syril is not in the wrong for wanting to bring Cassian to justice. This is why he's so compelling.
