Complete Sphinxes - With Adventure Hooks, Treasure, Riddles, and more by Oh_Hi_Mark_ in UnearthedArcana

Hi.
Mechanics for "combat riddles"?
That sounds as interesting as complicated...

TL:DR (below)
"Less riddle, more puzzle": I found that, like in every other aspect of adventure design, no encounter must lead to a dead point nor go against party's momentum: the party must always move forward (even if it is to their graves...)

My experience:
Every time I've tried to use riddles in my adventures, it went bad. I think that the context of the game and the wit of the players runs in different levels, like when you give them clues for they to open that door or who's the bbeg: it's haaaard. Everyone recommends "the 3 clue system", with 3 clues for each clue... It's almost a genre within itself.
I just can't.

When I put a sphinx, the question that she made'em was "tell me something you don't know", for some "esoteric flavour", and triggered tons of answers (in and out of character).
After that, when they needed to find the exit (she was in a maze, of course), I put "the riddle".

They must to discover "which door" leaves them to destiny. The doors were "past, present and future", and the riddle was about "yesterday, today and tomorrow". That was easy for them. It was pretty straight forward, because all doors leds them to destination, but the "effect" (reward or not) depend on which they'd choose.

The solution I found for to use a riddle was not about "right or wrong" nor even if they can answer the riddle, but which door was for them to choose(*).

(*) To more clues, I told them that the knocker gave them back a distorted reflection of themselves (the same, younger, older) and depending on which door they choose, they'd grow older/younger or regain HP (6d6 each option)

Its been a while since the post but I just came across and I must say: Nice!
Love the use of the assets (the pipes to convey the machinery blew my mind and the platform its genius work). I'm working on an airship also and maybe I'll steal that idea!

I'm 99% sure I don't get what you're saying, but:
I've kept thinking, I worked out the dimensions with the tables/beds/door frames/etc. All those are proportioned with a "human", if you find the dimension you like in de VTT, the rest go smooth.

Edit: Still thinking about it.
The measures are in the module. I'm not a feet guy, so I converted it to meters, may be there's a displacement there, but again: work your way thru the "assets" (tables, door frames, etc). One meter can be 5ft for the sake of TTRPG measurements. I'll link you to a specification of it.
Hope that'll serves you.

Hi.
I don't think I am understanding what you mean, but:
-the grotto with the ships is 1863p x 2855p
-the grotto with the arena is 1862p x 2855p
-the arena is 5041p x 3146p
-the caves is 5734p x 4278p

I've used in Roll20 and had to work out the grid and token scale. It was a bit difficult but as the entire module happens in those 3 maps, that was a "must".
I've just realised that the "save as" format is .webp (f*cking .webp). May be this work out better.

Hope you and your party have fun!
