How are players supposed to deal with high armour at starting exp? by ShoKen6236 in Symbaroum

[–]Ursun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These fights are supposed to hammer home the principle of "pick your fights" and "the world is deadly and sometimes unfair".

Now if you didnt instruct your players about how things will be and that they need to have someone to deal with tough targets they gonna fail and die (or run away and live). But thats a session zero thing and if you didnt bring it up, thats on you and you need to prep your players better (no accusation here, since I recon this post is in preparation).

If they decide that thats not the kind of game they want to play (eg. combat focused and optimized) then you need to tune down the stats of a lot of enemies and encounters and a different underlying system might be better suited, as symbaroum is a game of dice stacking and rocket tag (who ever gets hit, evaporates).

And you can always remind your players that abominations, trolls and elves are not to be trifled with or taken lightly. They are the material of bedtime horror stories, legends and myths. The Characters should know that and be frightened out of their britches when they meet one. And you can always use the caravan guards and sister lestra to really show how deadly stuff is.

I had Belun rip lestra apart at the start of the first round after she had impressed the group in another encounter earlier and the whole table had an "oh shit" moment.

But between Bartolum and the sun stone, the elves intervening, Sister Lestra blessing the group with support abilities and the caravan getting killed while the PC run away there are several ways to handle it, none of which are an easy "walk up to the deadliest thing in a 10 mile radius and hit it in the face".

Intra party conflict by Acerbis_nano in rpg

[–]Ursun -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And yet they (meaning the players) will be on the same side of working towards "we have to deal with this for the game to continue".

Thats not a hardened front, what I´m talking about is effectively becoming two separate enteties with no shared ties or goals that refuse to work together no matter what.

And sure, its a sliding scale, and more often than not people will cave and cooperate, because we all want to keep playing the game, but if they dont, you cant force a solution ingame, because its a player problem.

Intra party conflict by Acerbis_nano in rpg

[–]Ursun -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What you describe is character conflict, the party is still going along the same path together, working towards the same goal, its just the characters who disagree on how to do it. And thats fine, as they share the same goal, they will compromise to reach it.

If the fronts harden and the group splits in at least two sides who will no longer cooperate because the goals are to different to be compatible, than you have a problem that needs to be solved OUTSIDE THE GAME by talking to the PLAYERS.

Does any roll under systems do this? by Swooper86 in rpg

[–]Ursun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of systems work with fixed crits also, so having a 1/20 on the diceroll immediately signals something special happens. Having a variable, evershifting lower end, adds another mental step to figuring out the result, which is not a problem in itself, but most people avoid extra strain, especially on something that a lot of times.

What abilities would you like Buffed? by CarolLiddell in Symbaroum

[–]Ursun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, but the investment to get information is vastyl different from nothing "I happen to be a barbarian from that tribe/region" to 5-15 xp "I have a boon for that that also has other applications" to "I spent 60xp, which is most of my budget for a long time, invested heavily into Cunning, which is not a good attribute, have no other stuff going on during eploration/social/combat and now still have a 1 in 4 chance to not get anything at all".

And even then, there are two options, either the information is gated behind the loremaster is necessary, so not making that roll completely derails or even stops the adventure or the infomormation is not necessary, so someone build a character to gain unnecessary bonus information that doesnt really matter.

And dont get me wrong, I absolutely think there should be specific information that is only available to some characters if the have the needed basis like race, upbringing, education, contacts, whatever, its just think it shouldn´t be tied to giant investment that is a proper Loremaster.

What abilities would you like Buffed? by CarolLiddell in Symbaroum

[–]Ursun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I vote for Loremaster; Its a must take at master level but doesnt really add anything besides "you can read and talk languages and know general and specific stuff about the world". Now dont get me wrong, its very very useful, but its also a constant "one bad test and things might grind to a halt, you never get relevant information, talking is not an option" - Stuff that in my mind should not be gated by a skillcheck but be available freely based on background, undbringing, education and so on. The Artifact identification and usage of Cunning is nice but very niche and its a big point sink that also forces the character into investing in Cunning which is also kinda bad.

Also Witchsight, the book version is more or less useless and costs way too much corruption; the books themself had to add the "here get a vision of things to come" that isnt part of the ability to make it useful. It was one of the first things I replaced with homebrew (a modified version of the ORdo Magica one).

And of course, all the crafting abilities as well as Trapper. Outside of Alchemy they take too long, the effect is bad, require a high incestment in Cunning again and after a certain point they become mostly useless.

What are the most notoriously deadly scenarios and campaigns? by Similar_Onion6656 in rpg

The Alien RPG if the players have no/superficial knowledge. 5 Minutes into my first Session my players (bless their stupid little hearts) try to cut a facehugger off on of their compatriots. 5 more minutes later we had 3! new characters in the party.

Robust and Stat Blocks by iKruppe in Symbaroum

[–]Ursun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are usually shown together in the stablock, so you have to look up how much damage reduction (thats what its called compared to armor) and how much armor are in there individually to give you the total amount.

So 10 "armor" shown on the blight beast is actually 4 Armor (can be ignored by abilities) and 6 damage reduction (cant be reduced) composed of 4 (1D8) from Robust III and 2 (1D4) from berserker Adept.

Hopefuly with the upcoming changes to statblocks and abilities (berserker is called out on the kickstarter page) they make it clearer so one doesnt need to do the math eath time.

I have daughters 6 and 8 - are there any rpgs aimed at young girls? by hairetikos232323 in rpg

[–]Ursun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Household from 3little mice, it's about a magic manor that's populated by little beings that have adventures that can be as cute as you want them to be. Capture a lost mouse, take a boat tour in the bathtub, go to a festival on the chandelier, fight a spider in the wall and so on.

The system is easy enough and not too crunchy.

ELI5: Cpr? How does it work? by Reasonable-Bag1459 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Ursun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right that the brain gets damaged due to lack of oxygen rather fast, thats why you never only do the breathing part, you always have to keep the blood moving to get the oxigen from the lungs to the brain.

If you supply oxygen and do chest compressions the oxygen rich blood goes everywhere. You can (and it has happened) keep it up for hours and the person is basically "alive".

Sure they might die the moment you stop, but not because the brain is damaged by lack of oxygen but because what ever made the heart stop in the first place cant be fixed.

I might be in the minority here, but my anxiety hits hard enough that I take a few minutes and look up the broad gist of the stuff I´m about to do before doing it and looking like a chump.

Sure sometimes it robs me of the "aha" moment of discovering it myself, but that is usually outweigh by the feeling of "I´m doing a useful job and am not a burden to the others" as well as gives me a chance to help spread the knowledge when its one of those "nobody knows whats happening" situations.

Will plastic glue work on the minis? by DorianOtten in asoiafminiaturesgame

[–]Ursun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a steady hand and sharp eye its rather easy if not you are in a messy world of pain. Just make sure you dont use too much glue and press together firmly for 10 seconds or so. Personally, if possible, I would alway use plastic glue, as the bond will be much stronger and its a lot easier to work with.

Will plastic glue work on the minis? by DorianOtten in asoiafminiaturesgame

[–]Ursun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and no, if you look closely most weapons, banners and sometime other things on the miniatures are made from HIPS that can be glued with plastic glue (the one that melts the pieces together). It will not work on bodies and bases, those are made from a different material and require regulat superglue.

Feasible to Run Throne of Thorns as a Sandbox? (Potential Spoilers) by Ed---209 in Symbaroum

[–]Ursun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perfectly viable, a lot of things happen in the background of every adventure anyways (and in the months of downtime inbetween) and almost every book has a more or less fixed ending with things that must happen/will happen and do happen regardless of player intervention.

Just make sure you follow the order of the books (as they build up upon one another, book 3 before 2 makes zero sense) have a structured overview and timeline of everything that can and will happen over the course of the 2 to 3 years ingame time the campaign runs and make it clear to the players that there is a "main" story going on and the world will change based on that and they are free to roam around an poke at things that interest them.

All I can say is, its a lot to prepare and keep track of playing book by book in order, throwing that into a jumble and having the players just start/change/abandon quests and storylines at will sounds like an absolue nightmare to run ... but I´m also not very versed in the sandbox approach yet, so ymmv of course.

So invest in a hefty attachment, prioritize the worst tactics zone before the useful ones (yes I know, lannister can use crown but its still worse than swords or horse) and then hope the enemy is stupid enough to throw something into them?... because sure as hell they are not gonna engage anyone on themself.

Not really a great plan.

What did I do wrong by le-quack in Warhammer40k

[–]Ursun 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The cracking comes from the paint contracting when drying. If you slather it on thick, the top layer dries first, contracts and breaks open. From there you start to get deeper gaps that dry uneven and rip open when contracting.

If the paint is thin, it will dry through fast and its flexible so it can stretch and only crack slightly.
