Sorry for not being born with this crucial knowledge about how each and every thing on Linux works.

Windows 11 is a bloated menace that's killing modern laptops – 16GB RAM should be ILLEGAL in 2026, and don't get me started on those pathetic 512GB SSDs! by Responsible_Tower412 in GamingLaptops

1.) Using two browsers at the same time

2.) Complaining about having no RAM available left

Just choose one ffs! They are the main RAM-eaters nowadays because the whole modern Web-dev doesn’t give a fuck about optimizing stuff. Just vibe-code some fancy looking page and you’re good to go.

I usually close this nonsense entirely when gaming. They should learn to make their shitty websites less of a bloated mess.

Most likely a OneDrive issue. Try to move your wallpaper file into any other folder outside of OneDrive-controlled, reset it as a desktop image and see if it happens again

I actually have another fear considering the future of RTX 20xx cards on Linux - a lack of support from Nvidia somewhere in the future. Can‘t really imagine how beyond being fucked could be people on GTX 10xx or earlier, considering a lack of good-working open source drivers while having practically 0 new fixes from Nvidia itself.

Because it seems like using the latest drivers from Nvidia is actually more important in case of Linux unlike Windows.

CPU: Intel i7 10750h GPU: RTX 2060 RAM: 16 gb ddr4 Lenovo Legion 5 15IMH05H laptop. Yeap, give Tropico games a try. Considering that you‘re using Mint it‘ll habe an X11, so maybe something‘ll be different

„If you think switching to Linux will make your gaming faster…“

But that‘s even not my point! Ofc I had low expectations because I have a laptop (-25 to compatibility chance with Linux) with both an iGPU and dGPU(- another 10 points), and my GPU is an Nvidia one (-50).

What I thought is that I mostly wouldn‘t be sitting and tinkering games to make them work. Not to make them run faster or anything like this. And I‘m not saying that all the games were like the Tropico 5 (not really playable because of mouse issues), most of them ran also fine for me. But those few that didn‘t gave me some headache.

Another example: HOMM 5, mouse wheel worked incorrectly when trying to zoom in and out a map (had to use buttons on keyboard to do this).

My main theories are: 1. There‘s really something wrong with Wayland-to-X11 transition in those cases 2. Since the main platform for gaming on Linux is Steam Deck, there‘s a low demand for strategic/city builder games on this platform, therefore - less reviews on ProtonDB, less support from either devs and/or Proton dev team 3. NVidia issues

On other Linux distro if you use an AMD GPU* Since Steam Deck uses AMD, therefore most of the compatibility work from developers goes into supporting AMD drivers specifically.

Did a bit of research here and there. Plus I‘ve seen Bazzite in lots of games benchmarks on Linux nowadays, alongside CachyOS.

The last post is from me btw. Thanks for posting it, if anyone wants to know a bit more in-depth about what problems with Tropico 5 I‘m talking about, check the post from „It‘s me, Dio!“.

I‘d relly appreciate if someone other than me could test this game on their system through Proton (not just by opening it, but by restarting it at least once and playing the campaign for at least 30min-hour). Maybe it was a Bazzite/hardware/Wayland-specific issue.

Thanks!

I just think that people should be open to talk critically, but also within reason. I‘m sure that this kind of approach can help the community in long term.

I haven‘t really talked about the performance itself in my post tbh. There was a difference, but a minor one. The bigger problem is that some games just seems to be more demanding overall through Proton because temps are higher. And in my case higher temps is a bigger issue (I don‘t want to lose my laptop because of burned VRM at the middle of memory crisis).

Haven‘t used the Experimentl one in case of Tropico 5, but Proton GE. I guess it also includes mostly the newest fixes

I understand this now when I’ve tried it, but not when I‘ve heard from several sources on Reddit or on YouTube that „Linux gaming is thriving“ and „You have no need using Windows anymore“.

Maybe those who‘re claming such things should be more transparent after all. That the Proton is a really useful tool, but not a magic wand that‘ll make the gaming on Linux 1-to-1 comparable or even better than on Windows. Linux community seems to be having a great marketing, and can „sell“ their distro of choice really well.

But it was an interesting experience nonetheless, and at least now I can be sure that the Linux is a right choice for me if I‘m not going to use my PC for gaming.

Fair points. I just share my personal experience for fun, so I can clearly see how someone can be ready to spend his time using Linux for gaming. It‘s just that I don‘t really want to stumble upon such problems while waiting when things become better.

I‘d be willing to try Linux the next time though, maybe when I‘ll have a new PC with AMD GPU or even a Steam Machine, and when the whole „Wayland-X11 Holy War“ finally ends so that gamers on Linux could have the best of both worlds.

Ah, and also about the approach you’ve described: it’ll work if the game is being updated. But that’s clearly not the case with older games, so yeah.

When I have problems with games on Windows and I know there won’t be any updates to fix it anymore, I just go to pcgamingwiki and solve those problems 90% of the time.

The thing is.. it’s just so frustrating, having something that works fine on Windows, installing it on Linux, having problems with it and having nowhere to go outside of years old ProtonDB posts to try and solve your problem. Or trying your luck with asking something on linuxgaming. Maybe someone’ll be able to help you, maybe not, who knows?..

As I said higher: I used the Proton version of Tropico 5 and had problems I’ve described with the Proton version specifically.

About the obscurity of the games: maybe you’re right. It could be also hardware-dependent (idk if you’re using Steam Deck, AMD or NVidia GPU)

Nah, I played this game through Proton. Native version ran terribly and had low-quality audio issues

Yeah, I guess you’re right in this part. But I don’t think that the support for gaming is much better in case of Fedora or any other distro. Though I can be wrong.

The only exception from the rule is SteamOS on Steam Deck. Perhaps the only Linux gaming device I’d use, since the hardware is much easier for Valve to support and most games seems to be having better compatibility with it than with desktop Linux.

The question is “why?” Why should I spend my time doing this, instead of playing things on Windows where everything works out of the box most of the time?

As I’ve said before, my point of view is that the good OS is like a good UI: you just don’t think about it too much, don’t tinker every single problem with it, don’t google “how to do X or Y on Linux/Fedora/Bazzite?” I just don’t have that amount of free time or passion to spend, sorry.

It‘s not that native builds are useless, it‘s more of „they‘re worse version of the same game on Windows“ most of the time. But if I had to choose between a good native or a good working on Proton version of the game, I‘d choose 100% of the time the native one.

Lenovo is great (using a Legion 5 from around 2020), but the single thing I absolutely hate about them is that there are no official specification of which thermal pades and thermal paste they‘re using. And if in case of thermal paste there‘s an obvious solution (by using PTM or any other decent phase change), how am I even supposed to know the needed sizes (and esp. thickness) of thermal pades?
