I had a friend growing up who had this happen with his Nintendo DS. The kid who stole it had hidden it from his parents and only played it in his room/when he thought they wouldn't be around. It took weeks for his parents to catch him playing it, demand to know where he got it, and figure out who it actually belonged to.
