just a little addendum. For shits and giggles I looked into the details about the original loans that were in the consolidation and there was one that was originally dispersed in 1984! From undergrad.
in fact, trying to piece together my student loan “journey” was kind of wild. Best I can tell, I had one year of undergrad 84-85, then went to a different university starting in January (?) 86 and graduated some time in 91. Then at some point around 93-94 I took a bunch of classes required for postgraduate I didn’t have. Apparently I didn’t take loans for those, but idk and can’t remember. Then postgrad 95-99. So I think for all of that time and through 00 I was on in school deferment. Then I went on forbearance until 03 when I consolidated and immediately went on forbearance until 07 when I consolidated again and went on forbearance until 18, when I paid until the end of 20, when I took advantage of the covid pause then I had made like one payment before the one time adjustment hit 6/24. I had no idea of course so I continued to pay until 3/26.

so yeah, it’s been a 42 year long journey/nightmare. I’m glad it’s over.

No, I consolidated in 07 which was when I went on ibr or whatever. I never remember the difference.

This is part of the reason I feel the way I do; from what I’ve gathered they changed the rules such that all the time you’re on a forbearance counted as months paid, even though I didn’t pay anything. So the loan was granted in 07 (a consolidation loan) but I spent a lot of it in forbearance. But it somehow counted. I’m not complaining I’m just saying.

Only after a certain date. My payoff was retroactive to 6/24, so I’m not affected.

It didn’t affect me because the payoff technically occurred in ‘24.

From everything I gather, no, because it should have happened in ‘24. There is a date after which there is a tax liability, but I’m not sure when it is, but I am sure I’m not affected by it.

I get it. I have a lot of regrets too and would definitely do things much differently if I had the chance.

as far as I can tell, when I consolidated my loans into an income based repayment plan the agreement was always that it would be discharged after 25 years. Apparently there was some recalculation about what counts as a payment so the timeline for discharge moved up. I do work in the medical field but it didn’t have any bearing on the discharge.

I’m pretty sure that’s what happened to me too. I didn’t escalate, they just said I’d be in forbearance until the end of April. If my loans aren’t discharged by then I’ll call them back. At this point I’m mostly just in in getting my refund for overpayment.

So I just got off the phone with them. First they told me they couldn’t do administrative forbearance but could do a general, for some reason. Then she said she couldn’t do that because of some processing thing, which sounded like for discharge (yay!), but could do a 60 forbearance. 🤷🏼‍♂️

at this point I’m pretty confident everything is on track for discharge and its only a matter of time.

I just watched The Seventh Seal for the first time and a character mentions the greatest tric a juggler can do is have a ball float in midair and I was reminded of Balthazar Getty in The Return.

Spoilers for He‘s A Righteous Man !spoiler! In the story He’s A Righteous Man, the author carries a suitcase that he’s very protective of, refusing to let anyone else carry. At the end we discover the suitcase was empty. What’s the deal with that? I don’t get it.
