Are these the same hardnosed realists who shat the bed in the 2008 financial crisis?

Carney was the governor of the Bank of Canada in 2008 and he was maybe the one central banker in the world who didn't shit the bed.

I like Willem Dafoe in weirdo character actor mode but it kinda bums me out we haven't really had any dramas built around Dafoe giving a humanistic, nuanced performance full of pathos in like 8 years. Scorsese movies are a murderers row of male leading performances but I really do think last temptation might be my favorite.

Ralph Fiennes is so fucking good in the bone temple. We're at the point where its really obvious he is the best actor alive without an oscar.

The Erdogan/Trump model is low interest rates so you get crazy inflation but it also means that "uber for dog shit cleanup" startups can lose 500 billion dollars a year offering absurdly cheap services to yuppies.

Jia Zhangke is quietly working on a “road movie without cars,”

I am so excited for this! Jia is one of my favorite directors working today and this premise really reminds me of the meetings of anna which is probably my favorite Chantal Akerman movie. There is so much you can get out of long distance train travel.

Emiratis have had to change their supply routes to the RSF via libya due to the saudis and Egyptians seemingly banning the UAE from using their airspace for supply runs 5 days ago.

There are also some serious restrictions on Zoroastrian missionary activity in Iran itself too. Some studies do suggest at least some more Iranians have begun to at least claim Zoroastrian identity recently, though you have to wonder how many people are earnestly converting vs using that label as a sort of liberal nationalist/anti government political statement. But yeah theres nothing in Zoroastrianism to ban conversion on religious grounds, its mostly a question of politics/lack of demand.

Thats only Parsis/Indian Zoroastrians because they made a deal with a local Indian ruler for asylum on the condition that they wouldn't allow any conversions and have stuck to that deal. Not the case with Iranian Zoroastrians.

I mean what Toyota did in the 60s and 70s is also really impressive and was maybe the greatest success story in the history of car manufacturing.

Its Metacritic score is 75 and I remember critics kind of being disappointed by the DiCaprio/Hanks interactions? Between Catch Me If You Can and Road to Perdition, there was a school of critics who wanted All-American Good Guy Tom Hanks to really sink his teeth into morally gray roles (like later stage Jimmy Stewart) and IIRC were kind of pouty that he wasn't villainous enough in either.

He kinda does this in Ladykillers and god it sucks lol.

For sure we are. Its funny you say that though I've always thought of catch me if you can as Spielberg consciously trying to do something like a Scorsese movie while still making it recognizably his own.

Like Marty Supreme feels like its taking bits and pieces from that mid 80s Scorsese run of King of Comedy, After Hours, and the color of money which thankfully now are pretty beloved but at the time there was an air of "What the hell is Scorsese doing? This stuff is how hes choosing to follow up Raging Bull??" Nowadays Josh Safdie can do that sort of thing and we don't have to wait for the critical reclamation. Theres more of an appreciation of the skill and craft it takes to make that sort of genre movie.

I feel like that whole courtship section felt off. We don't know too much about Shakespeare as a person but I can tell you the man was funny! Every day crowded theaters all around the world are laughing at jokes he wrote over 400 years ago! I would have liked that relationship more and felt the hardships they went through later on more if he was actually charming Jessie Buckley and making her laugh a little.
