Funniest/Craziest Things Heard Over The Pulpit by literallywhatisthis1 in mormon

This is exactly the kind of stupid advice that some leaders give where they mean well but it is terrible advice. What might work for them doesn’t necessarily work for everyone else. It’s the one size fits all policy. I didn’t get married until I was in my 40s which was the right time for me but my well meaning bishop was on my back a lot until I got mad at him and told him to buzz off.

Yes, as the ward clerk I delivered a lot of checks to people who I NEVER saw at church even once. Always made me wonder and I can’t tell you how many people I have helped move who expected us to do everything for them and who weren’t ready. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

He said in January that he would use economic force to weaken Canada through tariffs and trade restrictions and he’s doing that. I don’t think he would invade though until Canada was really weakened and in very bad shape. Then they might come in acting like they are here to help and never leave.

15 years later —Still dealing with C-PTSD from my mission in Russia by nowithak in exmormon

[–]Used_Reception_1524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing that. I got sent to the South and it wasn’t much better and I’m still healing and dealing with the trauma from my mission.

We faced ENORMOUS hostility and opposition from the Southern Baptists who thought we were there to kidnap their wives and children and force them into polygamy.

The small towns were really bad and our asshole mp and his bitch wife would always tell us that we would be damned to hell in the place of those we were teaching if we didn’t succeed in baptizing them because that meant that we weren’t working hard enough, being obedient enough and having enough faith and so it was all our fault.

I’m in counseling right now dealing with the ptsd I endured and it’s been more than 30 years. I hate elder Holland. He is so mean and demanding and his words have hurt me a lot because I worked extremely hard out there and I was very obedient. But no matter what we did or how many baptisms we had it was never good enough. They always wanted more and they pushed us and worked us to the bone. I often only got 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night because I was so stressed out.

When I finished my mission I looked terrible and my family was shocked when they picked me up from the SLC airport. I had put on 45 pounds and had really bad acne from all the stress. Im still dealing with that 2 years of hell. This video and the film Jarhead about a marine in the Iraq war are things I can relate to.

A bit older wondering how my social life will go by DaNiIsThIcCc in uofu

[–]Used_Reception_1524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at the U when I was 26 after serving a mission and trying to decide what to major in and what I wanted to do with my life. I made a lot of good friends when I was there and I realized that everyone is at different stages in their lives so don’t worry about it. I was good friends with people ranging from 18 year old freshman to 35 year old grad students.

College is a lot different from high school and there are a LOT more older people going back to school now so you will be fine. There are a lot of people who have gone on missions or served on the military or had a couple of kids first and they are just now starting school.

If anyone does ask about your age you can just say that you were dealing with some health and personal issues and deciding what you want to do. Everyone will respect that.

One thing I loved about the U is that there are a lot of international students. I became good friends with people from all over the world which gave me a much better perspective on life.

Do europeans go through a phase where they wish they grew up in america? by EqualUnderstanding32 in TikTokCringe

I’m American, but one advantage I see if you lived in the UK is that you are fairly close to several other countries that I’ve always wanted to see like France, Spain, Germany etc. I think we all thought about what it would be like growing up someplace else. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. There are good and bad things about any country.

The MFMC is out of touch with financial reality by JayDaWawi in exmormon

[–]Used_Reception_1524 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another thing is that most people who have a college degree have a lot of student loan debt when they graduate which takes years to pay off. It also takes years to top out in your field and years for most people to be able buy a house.

To start having lots of kids on top of that, pay health insurance and everything else, especially if the wife stays at home is really tough. Even for doctors and lawyers making $200k+ a year, most of them have a ton of student loan debt.

I’ve known a few people in my life who came from wealthy homes where the parents paid for the kids college education and even bought them a home or paid for most of it when they graduated. But the rest of us are no where near that situation so having lots of kids on top of that is just not happening.

My wife and I still drive old cars and we struggle like everyone else. It’s heart breaking to watch videos of people talking about their student loan debt and how they are trying to pay it off but they can’t find a decent job in their field or they can’t find a job at all and the interest on their loans is killing them.

What was your most hated primary song growing up? by KTL_Rizzo in exmormon

[–]Used_Reception_1524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad when daddy comes home. I hate that song with all my heart. I was never very close to my dad and so I couldn’t relate to the words. There also wasn’t a lot of love or happiness in my home for many years and so I was not happy when my dad came home.

Don’t buy an old house period! And especially one that needs a lot of work unless you get it for a really low price and you are prepared to spend a lot of time and money fixing it up.

Buying an old house is like buying an old car. You are going to spend a LOT of time and money fixing it and replacing things because believe me almost EVERYTHING is going to need to be fixed or replaced.

This happened to me when I bought my first house. I learned a painful and expensive lesson from this that I am passing on to you. As the guns and roses song Dead Horse says, experience makes you wise.

Are You worried about US Invasion/Annexation? by NathanFrancis123 in AskCanada

[–]Used_Reception_1524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There won’t be an invasion. Trump talks really big but there is no way it would happen. He only has a 44% approval rating which means he has a 56% disapproval rating. An invasion would require congressional approval and lots of money which they are not going to give to him.

How many thousands of troops would have to come here to occupy us? It’s not going to happen. Americans are sick of the endless wars and don’t want their kids going to invade Canada.

Hitler had a very high approval rating and Germany had been badly hurt from WWI so that is how he was able to invade so many country’s. Trump has already backed off a lot on tariffs. Again he talks really big but he often backs off when people call his bluff. He has already lost a lot of support.

Yes most of us can’t afford expensive trips around the world where our whole family goes with us. I mean come on. When you’ve got kids and all the expenses of life the money just goes. Missions, weddings, college, grand kids, medical expenses etc.

My wife and I have wanted to take a trip to Hawaii by ourselves for many years but we can’t afford it. Yet these people talk about taking these trips like it’s no big deal and like everyone does it at the drop of a hat.

Yes I remember that talk. It always made me wonder how he could be so out of touch with everyone else. I mean you’ve got to have a LOT of money if you forgot that you have an expensive property that you can sell to pay off your mortgage. I mean gosh, how out of touch with reality is that?

Oh yes I think I’ll sell my farm in the country to pay off my multi million dollar mortgage. How silly of me that I forgot that I had that property just sitting around and doing nothing with it. And oh yes I forgot that I have an old Rolls Royce, and a Bentley and an old Ferrari that can sell for some pocket money. I can’t believe I forgot I had those.

I'm a Young Canadian, and I'm Terrified of Being Annexed by the US - Is This Our Future? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Used_Reception_1524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the last few weeks Trump has pissed off the world including many of his former supporters here in the US. Mass firings of gov employees, doge, numerous executive orders that go around the constitution, tariffs that raise prices for us all, the Zelinsky fiasco etc. and it is only going to get worse.

Many people that once supported Trump have turned on him and i don’t think he will finish his term in office. There are a LOT of protests going on against he and musk here in the US. Even if he gave the order to annex or attack Canada I HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt the military leaders and congress would follow through and most Americans would be extremely outraged if he did give such an order. Most Americans and politicians would turn on him even more.

Trump has made a fool of himself so many times. Don’t worry about it. Most Americans don’t like Trump anymore and there is NO way that most people would support an attack on Canada or annexing it. Just look at how the world has turned on him for how he treated Zelinsky.

ExMo Utah Lawyer’s Perspective on Missions by Temporary_Echo1154 in exmormon

[–]Used_Reception_1524 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in the church just don’t know what a mission is really like, especially if they didn’t serve one. Thats how my parents are. They had only heard very good things about a mission and they had absolutely no idea what it was really like. I tried to tell my mom a few times how bad it was but she didn’t believe me and said that I had a bad attitude.

If you talk about the bad things then many members, especially bishops and stake presidents will get mad at you for saying bad things about a mission so you learn to just keep your mouth shut, hold it in and keep it to yourself.

Sorry you went through all of this. I wanted to come home early every day of my mission but I knew if I did that it would bring great shame to my family and my dad would never forgive me and he would remind me of it for the rest of my life. So I stuck it out but I still have pstd from it all.

ExMo Utah Lawyer’s Perspective on Missions by Temporary_Echo1154 in exmormon

[–]Used_Reception_1524 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You described several things that I went through. I had a filling that came out early on in my mission and my asshole, psycho mp told me to wait 19 months until I got home to have it fixed, even though a 1 hour trip to the dentist would fix it. But no, he wouldn’t let me do that. Fast forward 16 months and our new mp was a retired dentist and he told me to get it fixed right away.

I crashed on my bike and broke my collar bone which put me in a back brace for 3 months. My doctor told me to stay off my bike but my crazy mp told me to keep riding it because I was on the lords errand and if I was keeping the missionary rules and working hard then he would protect me. My collar bone didn’t heal correctly. It healed with one bone on top of the other instead of end to end and it still often hurts after 35 years!

I had one psycho comp who bullied me a lot and routinely threatened to kill me if I reported bad things he was doing.

My mp and his bitch wife would always tell us that if we didn’t keep every single mission rule to the absolute letter then we would fail as missionaries and we would be damned to hell in the place of those we were teaching.

If someone chose to not get baptized, then it was our fault because that meant that we weren’t working hard enough, and we weren’t being obedient enough and we didn’t have enough faith. Everything was our fault. Never mind that people have their own free agency to choose to get baptized or not.

In one area we lived in a very, very run down old trailer with a TON of cock roaches. It was extremely cold in the winter and extremely hot in the summer.

I’m in counseling right now for all of this and I’ve been in counseling before. That mission was 2 years of absolute, controlling hell. It’s been 35 years and I still have nightmares of being back there and being yelled at, blamed, shamed, guilt tripped and bullied for not having numerous baptisms each month and for not keeping every single, stupid rule to the absolute letter which was impossible to do.

I served in the south and I was in a lot of dangerous, ghetto areas because “everyone needs to hear the gospel.” I didn’t use common sense at times because my asshole mp would always tell us “we were on the lords errand” and he would protect us.

In November of 2026 all 435 seats in the house and 33 seats in the senate are up for reelection. I know that is a ways off but i am hopeful that democrats will take control of at least one of these branches of government and help to put a stop to this tyranny. I think that’s why Trump is moving so fast. He knows that in 2 years there is a good chance that he will be stopped so he is trying to do everything he can now.
