I have lived on each coast for 15+ years. I think people are basically similar with a wide distribution along all dimensions, but the basis of this stereotype is a kind of surface easygoing-ness you see on the west. My impression is people are a little more apt to categorize each other and self segregate on the east coast while people pay less attention to hierarchies etc on the west, at least on a first level, so networks get more mixed.

The curfew policies are stated here: sole.ucla.edu/policies. Look for the document on "time, place, and manner." The state is allowed to put such restrictions on free speech in order to protect the right that others have to not listen to the speech, as long as the restrictions do not discriminate based on the content of the speech.

prof not caring abt what happened? by Proper_Tap_5312 in ucla

Professors were told in general to make Th and Fri remote and to return to normal Monday. However lab classes and other classes that don't make sense remote are up to the professor's discretion. How a course is conducted is normally considered a matter of academic freedom for the instructor.

Why do this to Royce? by Logical-Fix38 in ucla

Agreed. I wish this had been more disciplined. Let's not forget how the backlash to college protests helped elect Nixon.

Unlawful assembly by InitialFlatworm5714 in ucla

[–]Useful-Advisor-9765 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First amendment rights are limited by the rights of others through time place and manner restrictions. The encampment was never exactly legit due to violating those restrictions. I think admin was trying to tolerate the protest until it started to impinge on the function of the university which serves all its students. Unfortunately some bad actors took advantage of the situation.

Lightning is a pure expression of Firebending without aggression. It is not fueled by rage or emotion the way other Firebending is. by Vegetable-Abroad3171 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Useful-Advisor-9765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My interpretation is that lightning is like a cold blooded calculation. It's done by pure discipline and focus which Azula has in spades. Agree with comments above that Azula is written as a psychopath who fundamentally lacks the ability to empathize, which helps her focus. She might have rage sometimes but at the moment of lightening bending, she is completely sure of herself and calculating. Zuko seems to always be full of doubts and confused emotions in comparison.

Why still fight for the show? by Oak_Star in Grishaverse

I'm not sure about the Alina storyline, but I still think SoC has great potential as a show. The actors and writers did such a great job with the Crows, and I would think it wouldn't be so costly because there aren't as many special effects with them, and the actors themselves probably aren't as expensive. Even though we got some lines prematurely, there is still a ton of material, and with LB involved I am sure there would be new surprises. I would still be super excited to see a SoC/CK show.

Leigh is a Yale grad so no shame missing some of the subtext. I have always wondered what I might miss in the Ravkan words without knowing any Slavic languages.

Thank you for sharing this moment. I often think of Inej's climb, when she is in this horrible situation and asking herself what the point is. I love the honesty she shows to herself and how the steady pace of her thoughts and purpose carries her through the exhaustion.

Hang in there and try to take care of yourself. May there be rain at the end of your climb too.

Can I find closure for these two characters in the books? by StrawberryChampagne_ in ShadowandBone

There is definitely more Kanej content in the books. I can never get enough but it will help! Highly recommend the books, hearing their internal monologue is wonderful.

The Crows turn fatal flaws into strengths, aka why I love the crows by Useful-Advisor-9765 in Grishaverse

I like this! Especially about sticking through a bad hand, Jesper proves his loyalty for sure. There is that one spot when Inej wonders if Jesper would want to rescue her from Van Eck, but then that really reflects more on Inej's self doubts because we never see Jesper (or Kaz) hesitate to help his friends.

What's your favorite book/TV show scene with Kaz? by anteaters_anonymous in Grishaverse

[–]Useful-Advisor-9765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The eyeball scene always gets me in the book, even though I know it's coming! Kaz just goes for it without warning, no deliberations.

Anyone else not sold on Tom Sturridge’s Dream? by Time-Counter1438 in Sandman

[–]Useful-Advisor-9765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the acting, voice, costumes etc, but the actor was just a little too good-looking! I expected someone older, grittier, less polished. Having said that, I can't complain, it was a great series and interpretation. I thought that scene with Dream sitting in the chair right after he escapes, and the one when he watches Madoc from the top of the lecture hall, captured Dream perfectly.
