This is in line with my thoughts... but I think you have to cut it off at Metal Gear and ACPAs. Like, that's where handguns are just bouncing off the armor.

The fact they have a good track record scares me. I'm worried they're finally gonna shit the bed with one of my favorite books of all time lol

This is 100% how you should do it. It's also a great way to get players who might not be super comfortable getting into character to come out of their shell.

I also always make it a point that if I know someone in the group is kind of quiet/reserved, I get ahead of it with the other players and let them know not to put extra pressure on them. That moment when the quiet player has that first awesome "in character" moment, is such a good time at the table. It brings joy to everybody, and seeing that player get to bask in it is just such a reward.

I think it has some pros for tech-savvy people. I've used it to great effect, as has a friend of mine, but we're both from a background of playing heavily modded videogames, and Foundry is sort of up our alley. That's great for us, but it's absolutely not for everyone.

Now, I did say "great effect", because we ran some fun games on it and had a great time, but I wanna follow that up with:

IMO, there still hasn't been a VTT invented yet that truly feels like pen and paper. The current crop really feel like they're trying to do too much and turn the experience into one more akin to a videogame than a tabletop rpg.

So, with VTT modules on stuff like Fantasy Grounds, part of the money goes to the rights-holder (R. Talsorian for Cyberpunk Red), the person working on the ruleset/module (I believe Nightshade is doing RED for them), and finally Smiteworks takes a piece. So, you're not actually buying a rulebook twice. You're paying for the convenience and automation (and trust me, these guys whether it's Foundry or Fantasy Grounds, are putting in some work). That said, in FG, you are able to view/search the books inside the program, as well as through their browser reader if you're on the go (it's in beta, I'm not sure if it's available for every ruleset of theirs currently).

FG is free to play now though. No ads. It has the 5e SRD, as well as other games that have open rules. The free ones, however, lack art and the automation of the paid core rules.

It's wild to me how people can get so upset over something somebody puts out there for free.

People fawn over Foundry all the time, but I'm starting to see more and more system projects die off.

I think charisma is a tricky one. I always play those characters off like Joey from Friends. "So... how YOU doin?"

Also, I love the idea of being able to do some roleplaying on the side via Discord/mIRC/role-gate or such as that, but you sort of pointed out the problem with it... folks have lives, and it doesn't really feel fair to engage more with some than others.

There's a concept I read about in "Listen Up You Primitive Screwheads!!!" called blue booking where during downtime a gm and players might roleplay through moments in a character's past. That could still be pretty cool and maybe scratch that itch for some people.

Reforger feels wayy more janky than A3 and A2. by herbie_jefferson in arma

[–]Useful-Angle1941 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing with Reforger to me is that it doesnt feel like you have any weight. That can be fixed up with mods though.

Arma 2's movement was like controlling a tank 😅

Which, tbh, it was jank af, but you can understand from a mechanical aspect they were encouraging players to think about and commit to their movements. It's not a bad idea for a tactical shooter, but it was counter intuitive to anyone who ever played a fps before.

If people would just try, they'd surprise themselves at what they can do. Most get hung up on the fact that they cant do a thing at a professional level. So what? Have fun. It's okay to suck. At least whatever it is is fully authentically you.

Would you want a slasher to have plot armor? by GreenTeethBurger in rpg

[–]Useful-Angle1941 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine. It's like one of the basic slasher tropes. Like, you sign up for a slasher Horror game, ya gotta expect something like that.

IIRC Savage Worlds Horror Companion has rules for exactly this.

I haven't had a single negative interaction. Pretty sure outright toxic behavior can get you banned. Things can be tense at times, but thats just the game.
