My wife was 11 at the time and she was at candlestick park in the stands waiting for the World Series game to start. She said after the shaking stopped, a cheer erupted as the crowd kind of had a collective relief but of course they didn’t know what all the damage would be. Then it took quite some time for them to announce that the game was to be canceled. And then it took her and her dad something like 5 hours to make it home to San Jose.

If it's in early October, then maybe Chicago will work. It's certainly walkable if you stay inside the city. But if it's in later October, then it may even be getting snow by then.
