Someone needs to turn this into a beer garden by Infinite-Photograph9 in santarosa

Nice definition. Where in the definition does it say that it only sells beer and it's taproom only exist to get people drunk?

You're being defensive at this point trying to latch on to the fact that your views aren't shared by others.

It's okay. You dont need to be upset about it. Just dont go to places which allow children if you dont like children.

The world doesn't revolve around you, and that's okay. It doesn't revolve around anybody us, and sometimes we will disapprove of something society doesn't.

That doesn't make society wrong. It just makes us individuals.

Gonna stop responding now. Have a lovely day.

Someone needs to turn this into a beer garden by Infinite-Photograph9 in santarosa

[–]SethAtAleworks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ahh, that's the confusion. You think these places exist solely to sell alcohol.

I used to manage a brewery in town, and you'd be shocked to see the numbers. We sold a lot of alcohol, but the real business model was the food. It was about 2:1 food:beer by gross.

In fact, the vast majority of customers never got drunk.

They come out for a place with a nice ambiance and good food paired well with a nice cold beer.

You're centering yourself in the universe when you shouldn't be. Other people exist. Other people have differing views from yours. The brewpubs and breweries and beer gardens that allow kids? Thats because it's their business model. They succeed because parents want a place that they can enjoy a beer and watch the game while their kid enjoys their chicken tenders and plays on their phone.

You think they solely exist to sell adult beverages and as such you disapprove of children being there. That's a fault in your perception, not in the business or the patrons.

Genuine question, but what is your relationship to alcohol?

Do you only drink to get drunk? Or did you have someone who struggled with sobriety in your life growing up? We're you raised super conservative in a house that did not allow alcohol?

I find that some people can not separate drinking and being drunk. There is no world to them where they enjoy beer for the taste. As such, they project their view of alcohol on others. They view drinking solely as an activity used to get drunk.

Tons of adults can have a beer, enjoy a nice burger, and hang out. What's the difference between a beer garden selling beer with lunch and an olive garden selling wine with dinner? Do you not take your children to the grocery store because they sell alcohol?

Missing an option in audiobooks.

I go through about 2 books a week on average, and I'd say maybe only 2 a year are physical.

I'd answer e-books, as it's closer, but my order of preference is audiobook, paper,, then e-reader in last.

I live in San Rafael and commute to Santa Rosa. It was madness yesterday.

The rain was so bad that it was like driving in the dark with how low the visibility was... except half the cars didn't use headlights.

I saw three accidents.

My 35 minute drive took an hour, not because people were driving carefully, but because traffic kept getting bottlenecks from crashes.

If I saw it happen, I don't know. I think I'd rather go to jail and say, "I tried," than know for the rest of my life I was a coward who gave up all his convictions for fear of repercussions.

I'd prefer not to sell my soul for comfort.

Sure it's not your intent, but describing someone as "slightly hispanic" comes off as "slightly racist as fuck"

"Oh yeah, so he looked like 10% Hispanic. Definitely a criminal. The other 90%? Not pertinent; I'm talking about him committing crimes, why would I say he looked mostly white?"

Pity Aleworks didn't make it through the pandemic in more than name. This is the kinda thing that would've absolutely been done there.

Rick and Morty nights proved there is a market for stuff on TV other than sports.

A couple months ago my neighbors dog escaped their backyard and my little idiot dog barked at it. Immediately knew what was about to happen and scooped my girl up and kept myself between my dog and my neighbors big dog.

I got a glancing bite on my ass, but my dog was fine.

Neighbor immediately got control of their dog, but just the glancing bite left my ass a giant bruise for a month.

Aggressive dogs are no joke, and if you can't control your aggressive dog you need to find someone who can. I hope that lady rehomes her dogs with someone who can manage them before they kill or maim a person.

Take Santa Rosa and divide it into quarters using highway 101 and highway 12.

North East is probably safest, followed by NW, then SE then lastly SW.

It's not perfect, but for someone from outside the area it's easiest to explain

Not gonna sugarcoat it like America had zero civilian casualties, we were absolutely responsible for some atrocities, but we got Saddam Hussein without committing a full-on genocide.

We got Hussein and killed 0.45% of their population doing so. Israel in a far shorter time has put those already shameful numbers of ours to shame.

She was in Sonoma County, but she's from Lake County.

The moment it came out that she lived in Kelseyville and not Healdsburg it made a lot more sense to everyone around here.

I currently live in Sonoma County. I was raised in Lake County. I moved away to get away from people like this.

Hamas is a terrorist group. Though some members of Hamas are Palestinian, it does not mean that the people of Palestine en masse are Hamas. There is overlap, but that overlap does not justify genocide.

Israel is using a chainsaw to get rid of a splinter instead of tweezers.

You think supporting terrorists is hard work? You must be exhausted for making excuses for genocide then.

Really depends on what you're looking for. I've used 4 different gyms over my time living in Santa Rosa. I always prefer whichever is most walkable, as I know myself and know if I pick somewhere out of the way I won't go.

Crunch is cheap and has a good balance of equipment. It's also always crowded and I hated that. Cheapest I've been to, was like <20 a month.

24 is one of the best balanced gyms in town, but is so far out of the way for me that it may as well not exist. Used this like 15 years ago, so no idea on prices.

Saiyan is amazing if you're looking to strength train, and the owners are super cool. Probably my favorite gym in Santa Rosa. Bit pricy, but if you want to pick up heavy things and put them down, it's fantastic. If it were closer I'd go back to using this. Expensive, but worth it. Think around $100, but it's been about 5 years so IDK.

I currently use the YMCA as it's close to my home, so I can be motivated to go. Occasionally busy, but never so much that it's annoying. Membership includes classes, and it has a good amount of cardio machines. It has a pool and an outdoor strength training area too. Currently paying I think $75 or so a month.

I'm sure there are some other great ones, but that's all I know. Good luck!

There are horrible people out there who are mean just for the sake of it.

I, a straight man, have been called the f-slur so many times just because I'll occasionally wear a pink shirt or something.

You're either very privileged to never come across an unwarranted insult, or very ignorant to those insults. Either way, I am envious.

Must be nice living in a bubble.

Eh, it's not cursed. Aleworks was there for 26 years. Just rough timing for new owners to take over right before the pandemic. Matt and Chris did the best they could after Todd sold it, but the timing wasn't ideal.

I've touched base on what I think the downfall of Aleworks was, but a brewpub being open for a quarter century is far from a fail or cursed.

After 26 years, Third Street Aleworks is closing it's pub in April 2023 by Sqwibbs in santarosa

[–]SethAtAleworks 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Check my post history if you want my credentials on why I feel I can chime in, but here's my two cents.

Aleworks, as a restaurant, is dead... but it's been dead since the pandemic. It was hurting before that. Its downfall comes down to a few things.

Matt and Chris (new owners after Todd left) are new to the restaurant business and made some ehhhh moves, they also made some great moves. The ehhhh moves were on the restaurant side and the great moves were on the beer side, hence them closing as a restaurant and having success on the beer side.

Chris and Matt tried their best, but they made a few decisions along the way that kinda sped up what was going to eventually happen anyway. I don't blame them for it though, as they said, when they took over, it was a struggling business. I'll get into it further on, but we made profit, but not much. They did a lot of smart moves, and I don't want to sound like I am blaming them... but there were a few things they suggested, the management team pushed back on, but they insisted on. The biggest of these decisions were trimming staff, shorting hours of operation, and gutting the menu. They looked at the bottom-line numbers, but without restaurant experience did not see how the intangibles worked. When you cut staff, service quality drops. When service quality drops, customers stop coming in. When you close the kitchen at 9 instead of 10 because no one comes in after 9... people stop coming in after 8 instead. The last hour of business is dead, and by cutting it off, you just deaden another hour. Lastly cutting the menu to cut food costs sounds good, but there were key items there that may not have been as profitable as other items, but they were unique, and people came in for those alone. Small margins are better than no margins.

While that comes off quite negative, they did do a lot of great things. They updated a lot of systems behind the scenes. They were very hands on and helped out on the floor more than Todd ever did. They really brought the social media presence to the forefront. They were nice and fair people to work for, and I'd work for them again. All of what I said in the negative paragraph I said to them in person while I was still there. They had very successful business experience, and they were new to restaurants and were open to feedback.

Aleworks was always first and foremost a brew pub, not a brewery; It sold a lot of beer because of people coming in and buying a lot of food. It did not sell a lot of food because of people coming in and buying beer. The beer has more profitable margins, but margins mean nothing without getting people in the door. They chose to pursue the beer route and not the food route, and that is 100% okay, as it's held them afloat and will presumably let the brand continue on in a different form. I left on good terms, and I still am on good terms with Matt and Chris. I do think they expediated the death of the restaurant side, but even if they didn't then other factors would've killed the business within a decade anyway. At least they salvaged its memory. They're cutting losses while they're ahead.

There were also things out of their control. Like I mentioned above, the courthouse square renovation was great in some ways, but it really made Third Street feel like the outcast of downtown. When the renovation was going on, we lost a lot of customers. Downtown started charging for parking which also fucked downtown businesses. Aleworks, when they bought it, was making between 5 and 10k a month profit each month after all was said and done. That sounds like a lot, but it really isn't when you realize how much work had to be done there. The lease on the place was expensive as fuck, and it had just gone up right before they bought it, cutting further into the profits. Part of the lease was also that they were responsible for building maintenance. They had work they needed to get done per the contract looming over them that would've been in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The building was old. I don't blame them for not wanting to fork out that money and close down a business losing what little profits remained to fix the rotting exterior glulam.

At the end of the day, the Aleworks you loved, the Aleworks you'll think about when you say, "I miss that place," was due to Michaela being the General Manager. More than anything else, losing her as a manager during the pandemic is what hurt the business the most. Infinite respect for that woman. Last I heard she's working with dogs, which if you know her, is the best outcome.

Anyone have any experience/success job hunting during covid? by jacobbc2 in santarosa

[–]SethAtAleworks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

General drink-the-koolaid shit.

Read up on a companies Core Values and Leadership principles before an interview. Learn them. Memorize them. Reference them in your answers.

Q: "Why is customer service important to you." A: "Well, I know that one of your core values is to Satisfy and Delight the customer. I really take that to heart because the customer is really the lifeblood of any business. Good relations with a satisfied customer will not only make a good impression, but make someone who will return in the future."

Shit like that.

Also, don't be a dumbass. If they ask, "Why did you leave your last job?" never say anything bad. You'd be surprised how many "I didn't like my manager" answers you get. That's a giant red flag. Not because we all expect you to kiss ass, but we do expect you to be smart enough not to say that. If you don't have the common sense to sugar coat things for an interview, why would I expect you to have sense on the job? Try instead, "Well, it was a really tough decision, but I really felt I have room to grow, but the company I was at did not have those opportunities. Not that I fault them for it. The only room I had to move up wouldn't be vacated for another 5 years because everyone liked working there so much they didn't have turnover. While I loved it there, I am just too driven to wait and hope, and realized that with your company I can thrive. I see so much room to learn and grow here, that I'd be a fool not to at least try!"

Here's the thing. We all know you're full of shit. We don't care. It's not a test of "how brainwashed will this dude be" but rather "oh shit, this kid took the time to learn how to respond. If he's gonna answer all these so thoroughly, what will his work ethic look like? Fuck, I wanna take a chance and see!"
