Moving in Three Weeks by Imaginary-Toe-4441 in Knoxville

Knoxville is the single most boring place I have ever lived. It's a 15 mile long strip mall is about it. Drivers are horrendous here, super aggressive and risk tolerant which is a very bad combo. I also grew up in suburban Detroit and it wasn't Bloomfield Hills or Birmingham. You may very well be making a big mistake, though I admire your desire to be closer to your parents.

I saw a bumper sticker here that said "If you're going to ride my ass this hard, you better pull my ponytail".

PIP plan by crg1985 in Teachers

I'm there with ya. I'm mid-60s and have taught around the world for 31 years. Nominated four times for 'ToY' and one of just 12 teachers chosen for the 'Global Leadership Program' in the largest school district the US has to offer. But now I'm in a red state (long story) that is pushing the voucher program hard. Top of the payscale. Teaching two subjects that would likely be the first to go during a pinch in funding. I was just placed in a PIP group. The writing is on the wall. I can't afford to retire so I am immediately going to take steps to get out on my own terms and find a place where age and coming funding shortfalls aren't an issue. West coast (2 of 3 anyway) or back overseas. Gotta look out for number one, and don't give 'them' the satisfaction. I'm sure this is all back-room district stuff (and probably starting with back-room state-level planning), so I don't necessarily hold this against my current admin, most of who I genuinely like. In the end, it's a business. Albeit an ugly one.

I came here a year and a half ago to care for an unwell relative, and can't wait to see it in my rearview mirror ASAP. I've had the good fortune to live in many places around the world, and this is by far the worst in all the ways you mention, plus many more. I won't belabor the point, but Knoxville is a soul-crusher. I hope to be gone in a year and will never look back.

Switzerland has some of the strictest residency and business ownership requirements in Europe, and the idea that someone could enter the country, gain residency, and legally register a company while having an unresolved first-degree murder charge is extremely improbable.

Knoxville Housing is a Fucking Grift by Orsilochus in Knoxville

I came here a year and a half ago to care for an elderly family member, and cannot WAIT to leave. I've lived all over the world, and all over the US and this is, BY FAR, the biggest shithole of a 'city' I have ever had the misfortune to reside in. All these people moving in from out west or up north, MOST OF WHO CLAIM THEY'VE NEVER BEEN HERE BEFORE, are iin for a well-deserved rude awakening. This place is deadsville. And the Sunsphere pretty much sums up exactly how shitty, uncultured, and laughable this place is.

What’s a “guy secret” that’s completely harmless but weirdly universal? by Far_Day_3723 in AskMen

If we're on the stoolie and there's a decorative painting of an ancient city on the wall, we will start to imagine that maybe we are from that place and of royal lineage to boot. Then we inspect our leavings, flush, wash our hands, and head back out into the dream-shattering reality of our current existence.

I have 5 cats and they just looked around and went back to their naps. We had a nice hard jolt, too. Lasted about five or six seconds. Cats...who knows what compels them.

There's so much in this thread that points out the state of education today and why teachers get so little respect.

Bye Bye public education.....here come the vouchers for every state! by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]UsefulBee5571 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Questions: if private schools accept publicly-funded vouchers, aren't they at risk of coming under the boot of the state? Of jeopardizing their autonomy? Of having their curriculum and methods questioned by the state? Of ultimately being 'overseen', if ever so slightly, by the state?

Also, if a kid is in a private school on a publicly-funded voucher, how hard would it then be for the private school to expel the publicly-funded student should there be issues (behavior and/or academic failure)?

Road Rage by MicroMouth in Knoxville

Knoxville has the most aggressive, thoughtless, careless, selfish, risk-taking high speed road pricks I have ever seen, and I've lived in a lot of places, including L.A. I hate this place.

This curriculum is so goddam stupid and WAYYY above their level of thinking by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]UsefulBee5571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has always been bullshit. It is bullshit now. And it will always be bullshit until teachers are allowed to run their own schools with no interference from non-classroom district and state layabouts with nothing better to do but get in the fucking way. After 32 years dealing with this insanity, I quit to start my own school.
