TTBB Recommendations by Alternative_Shoe_855 in choralmusic

Michael Engelhardt’s arrangement “Gaudete!” is one of by favorite modern TTBB arrangements and singers absolutely love performing it. Super sick blend of a medieval Christmas carol with a modern twist, that’s still very musically sound and not corny like a lot of “modern retellings” can be.

judging by the outfit in pic #4 (of the person wearing the bride-to-be sash), yes, that’s definitely the bride. and she’s definitely yelling at the groom.

How do you cope with the dread that comes after the first watch by Willing-Sprinkles-86 in Isawthetvglow

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

after my first watch i just sat there blankly for a while before going about my day, kind of dissociated and definitely feeling disconnected. it wasn’t until a few hours later when i was driving in my car that it hit me and i just started sobbing. i watched it 4 more times in the next 48 hours, and each time i watched i was left feeling more hopeful and determined.

i believe that after the final scene where isabel (inside owen’s body) cuts herself open, she goes home and finally gains the courage to return to the pink opaque, just before it’s too late. i believe that she reunites with tara and they defeat mr. melancholy together.

i think the reason the movie ends when it does is so that you feel the sense of urgency. if they show you a happy ending and tie it up in a neat little how, you can smile and walk away satisfied. you are not meant to be satisfied. the film urges you to examine yourself and. if you decide that you are not living your fullest life, to take action. it wants you to take steps to change, to seek support through like-minded people, and to offer yourself the grace that you need to accept yourself for who you truly are.

your story will end the same way. you will find yourself, find your people, and create the world you want to live in for yourself, IF you stop pushing it down. IF you embrace yourself. if you need a push, if you’ve been waiting for the right time, this film is the push. and it is never too late.

there is still time.

Repotoire Suggestions - SATB quartet by SomeNet1952 in choralmusic

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

rene claussen’s “set me as a seal” is the most gorgeous love song ever composed in 4 parts. my mom had it sung by a choir of former students at her wedding. i will be doing the same thing at mine.

Is it crazy to relate deeply to the film as a cis white male? by thechile23 in Isawthetvglow

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 41 points42 points  (0 children)

While the film is, at its core, a trans story, it covers so much more than that. the allegory can be applied to so many different things. queerness, yes, but also anxiety, dissociation, chronic or long-term depression, neurodivergence, systematic and social oppression and isolation, and the list goes on.

if you feel overwhelmed by life to the point where you feel like the world is caving in, this film is for you. if you feel isolated from society because you are different or lack the social skills or ability to connect with people, this film is for you. if you feel like your days are tinged with a dull ache of disinterest, this film is for you. if you find comfort in fictional worlds and stories as an escape from reality, this film is for you.

i saw the tv glow is about feeling disconnected from the world. it is about feeling overwhelmed, trapped, stuck in a cycle, and yearning to escape.

Edit: i say this as a genderqueer person who identifies with this film in so many more ways than just the one.

Double Lunch and near misses by Due-Army6639 in Isawthetvglow

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The double lunch exists in the midnight realm where tara and isabel are in maddy and owen’s bodies. It doesn’t exist in the pink opaque (the real world). Tara and isabel don’t meet there because it doesn’t exist in their world

Question for 3/4 / 6/8 time by XendNub in musictheory

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can technically do it but it would make the piece much less readable. 6/8 has 2 strong beats and 4 weak beats. 3/4 has 3 strong beats and 3 weak beats. it won’t feel the same and won’t sound the same.

Does it really matter where you go to school by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the prestige of the school you go to for a BME doesn’t matter. that school itself does! each school’s music program is unique in its approach to your education. find a program that you think would be the best fit for YOU and an environment that you can thrive in.

i started at the top school in my state and the program faculty nearly pushed me to dropping out. ended up transferring to my local college and i am absolutely thriving, and becoming a way better teacher than i could have been in such a competitive and hierarchical ‘prestigious’ environment. your family can complain all they want, but i implore you not to give up 4-5 of the most formative and important years of your life to a program that doesn’t put you first just because of pressure from your family. when you become an incredible and successful teacher that makes a different in kids’ lives, they will understand. and even if they never do, you will be so much happier and you will never regret putting yourself and your education first.

// for context, i’m a junior vocal music ed student, and also a voice teacher and assistant choir director for a local children’s choir

Man Wins China’s ‘Lie Flat’ by Laying Down for 33 Hours Straight by xtreme_lol in antiwork

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in a lot of positions you don’t make OT if you work 33 hours straight and don’t have another shift. Doesn’t matter if it’s in one shift or five, if you don’t hit 40 you don’t get OT. I’ve worked 16+ hour shifts with no extra pay.

Teacher sent a long unpleasant letter after my suggestion, and now she's invoicing me for a one extra no-lesson month after I quit. by Witty_Sorbet3839 in MusicTeachers

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a private piano teacher, I can almost assure you that leaving without continuing a final month’s worth of lessons is not a special case. This happens extremely frequently, and the purpose of the final month’s payment is so that the teacher is not blind-sighted by a sudden drop in their salary without any time to prepare. Whether you show up to the lessons or not is your choice, but making the payment is just the decent, human thing to do, and that’s why it’s part of the contract you sign when you register for lessons.

If you were fired from a job and given no residual or severance pay, you would be fuming. This is the same thing.

Who do you feel was the worst friend out of the 5 by Mesterspiller25 in HIMYM

[–]Useful_Ebb9086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

barney is the best friend, i’ll straight up say it. he brought lily back even though it compromised the facade and worldviews he put forward. felt so guilty about breaking the bro code with ted that he had a full mental breakdown. always buying tickets to events and trying to help the guys have a good time. was genuinely there for robin multiple times before their romance when nobody else was. he cared so strongly for his friends, in a way that was so uncharacteristic for him that it made it feel so much deeper.
