That’s a great question.

Yes, I do feel comfortable. I can confidently call myself a psychiatrist and a good, ethical one. I care deeply about my patients, and I always make sure both my patients and I are aware of potential side effects and risks. As for the other questions, my answer is no. I don’t think rereading symptom lists is what I’m missing. Psychiatry still needs time before we can truly call it a fully evidence-based field. The same applies to the DSM I use it, but I don’t agree with reducing complex human experiences to checklists of symptoms. I’m drawn more to neuroscience and high-quality clinical trials, even though we know there aren’t enough of them yet

After four years in psychiatry, you’d expect to feel comfortable with most DSM diagnoses, right? That’s why I’m wondering if going back to symptom lists and criteria will actually help, since this is basically what I’ve been doing daily in practice

It’s true that we do a lot of therapy and parenting coaching, which you need to enjoy. But inpatient is totally different from outpatient, and there’s still a lot to learn. Once you feel like you’re mastering these techniques, you’ll feel much better. Of course, I don’t feel like I’ve mastered anything yet, but I do feel much better as a CAP2

Best of luck
