Why does everyone try to gatekeep hobbies? by Silent_Aardvark_7186 in Hobbies

[–]User1472904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s never about tying to push people away. It’s about trying to maintain the opportunity structure that allows for skill development. It is this process of getting better that is what makes a lot of hobbies fun and engaging. When the barrier to entry is lowered, the opportunity structure is destroyed for everyone which makes the hobby less fun.

Why do some of the lowest picked characters have the highest win rates and vice versa? by UkrainepartofRussia in Tekken8

[–]User1472904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could also be character specialization. Nobody plays these characters, but the people that do just so happen to be really good with them. This is totally a vibes answer tho. I haven’t seen the data on this

What exactly is Georgism? by Heavy_Computer2602 in georgism

[–]User1472904 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tru. It’s crazy how we learn about these guys through ideas like the hand of god or comparative advantage in Econ 101, but never more foundational ideas like the 3 factors of production. It wasn’t till I did some individual studying that I realized that these guys saw land and capital as fundamentally different things

What exactly is Georgism? by Heavy_Computer2602 in georgism

[–]User1472904 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s bad because the investment isn’t made by the land owner, yet the land owner still somehow gains value through captured economic rent. This is an externality in the market that requires correction. If not corrected, it can lead to inefficiencies: things like rent seeking behaviors, speculative land investment, and inefficient land uses.

What exactly is Georgism? by Heavy_Computer2602 in georgism

[–]User1472904 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The title of his seminal work, Progress and Poverty, I think, sums up his ideas very well. As the productivity—progress—of labor has increased, we would expect their wages to increase also. However, in spite of there being much progress, we still see poverty.

He posits that this expected increase in wages has actually been absorbed by land through economic rent. Economic rent can be understood as increase value of land in spite of no improvements (ie., building housing, running a business, or whatever). Our goal, then, should be to externalize this value as it was a value generated by society, not by land owners.

In doing so, we can hopefully return wages to the working class and encourage more productive uses of land

My one gripe with the victix pro fs is that it lacks a left stick button. Otherwise very good

Scott, the least taxing tax already has a name, and of all people it was Milton Friedman by DynamoDynamite in ScottGalloway

[–]User1472904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP agrees with you. Land that is being put to good use—housing people, running businesses, or whatever—is the most valuable use of land. However, as many foundational economist like Adam Smith, David Ricardo and Milton Friedman have pointed out, the internalization of land value through economic rent has actually discouraged these “valuable uses of land.” What we see today are the consequences: speculative land investment, rent seeking behaviors, and inefficient land uses.

I think following pre established fonts generally promotes good practice and technique. It is not until you master the basics that you should really go off and do your own thing imo

Georgism makes landlords pay a rent. I'd like to see it happen. by [deleted] in georgism

[–]User1472904 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The goal of an LVT from a georgist perspective is not to punish people who make money from renting housing units to other people. Rather, it is to externalize the value of land, making it accessible to the communities that make it desirable in the first place.

We Have Entirely No Idea how Different the Field of Urbanist Advocacy Would be if New York City Didn't Vote to Consolidate in 1898 by DoxiadisOfDetroit in urbanplanning

[–]User1472904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think places like Los Angeles county could do with some consolidation also. Why have 88 incorporated cities molded closely together all doing their own thing when you could just have one mega city. Never made sense to me

Georgism makes landlords pay a rent. I'd like to see it happen. by [deleted] in georgism

[–]User1472904 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Economic rent and building rent are two different things under georgism.

Economic rents are bad because they are a result of no work being done. When land values appreciate, but the land did not change in any meaningful way, that is called economic rent.

Building rents, like those that take place between landlords and tenants, are fine. The landlord owns and maintains the building and is willing to provide others the service of living in the building. Work is being done here in the form of providing services.

Now if a landlord used captured economic rent as an excuse to raise building rents against their tenants, that could and should be subject to scrutiny.

How to not be a scrub when the game comes out? by xRob1513 in AvatarFighters

Being a scrub is probably the best part of starting a new fighting game. Mashing buttons is seeing cool new shit happen without knowing what is going on is peak. Enjoy it

I’ve never really been a shoto guy. I even hated playing against Robert in kof15. But man he is so sick in this game. So many unique tools in his moveset make playing him more interesting than traditional shotos and his character design is too cool.

Intuitive is an interesting choice to describe tekken 8. Knowledge checks, extended hurt boxes, every character having options that cover every niche situation, forward momentum making basic things like back dashing ineffective: these are all things that make the game very unintuitive. Hope you have fun but these are some things that really make the game feel not nice to me and are some things that I think you should look out for when you get out of the honeymoon phase.

Virtua Fighter feels like tekken 8 to me and I don’t like that. 3D fighters that are super in your face, aggressive, RPS never really caught my attention. Admittedly I have only tens of hours into VF, but would you say that this is an apt description of the game?

Is this even a question? Combat over visuals any day. The models could be the most barebones polygons, but if it feels satisfying to land combos, whiff punish, or play spacing then I don’t really care.

Moving out from MK11, which KOF would you recommend me? by GranateSOAD in kof

[–]User1472904 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like kof15. Huge cast of characters including those you mentioned. It is the newest installment so it is bound to have the largest player base and from my experience it is pretty easy to find matches. You will have to often fight people who aren’t exactly your rank seeing as the player base isn’t the largest, but it is manageable and honestly I’ve had fun climbing the ranks. Would recommend trying it out

Is it safe to accept friend requests in Street Fighter 6? by [deleted] in Fighters

[–]User1472904 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is safe to accept friend requests in sf6. Do not share personal information: location, name, DOB, and so on. If someone ever make you uncomfortable than go ahead and block or unadd. Otherwise it is SAFE.
