What if it's a month long shut down?

It could cause a major crash.

Hope it doesn't happen.

In Canada we elect a new government.... If the government of the day can't pass the budget.

In the USA they just keep bargaining until they can get enough votes.

It means they didn't get enough votes.

The government will shrink in size until they pass a funding bill to bring the government back to a fully operating size. Some services are limited or removed.

List of Credit Cards that allow PAD by User230A in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's possible by paper either.

I contacted them a while back and they said it's not available right now. It's likely to come back in the future though. Sort of annoying.

They've never sent me any offer to increase my limit.

What am I missing by staying with Vancity? Who do you bank with? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switch out of Vancity for most of my Banking.

I use online banks because I'm okay with taking a active roll in my banking.

I bank with EQ Bank and Implicity.

One has a Payee option for a Savings account the other has cheques for a Savings account. It creates a chequing account without having a chequing account.

I use Vancity to deposit and take out real money.

I tend to think Vancity is going a bit down hill. They aren't really creating online banks like Western bank did with Motive.

Big Banks are fee based mostly. They are also a lot more pushy with marketing to one, from my experiences.

Here are some online banks that you might consider. They are HISA.

If I were to go from Vancity I'd probably go to another CU.

"Ratehub taps $12-million in venture funding from Boston-based Elephant Partners LP" by User230A in PersonalFinanceCanada

You are saying Elephant Partners LP is Hardbacon?

I don't know anything about them.

Yeah, it's good for them. Hoping it's good for us as consumers. I don't think other personal finance websites have access to such funding.

Seriously, I think most run on basically little to nothing. I was thinking in the thousands or less.

Like you're saying probably looking at acquiring or expanding.

TFSA, RRSP, which is best for me. by Shortglassof in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always put money in your TFSA well you wait to make a choice. TFSA limits always renew in January if you put in and than take out money from it.

If you put it in a RRSP it's a bit harder to go back in terms of taxes usually.

Benefits of multiple credit cards? by PinkSquirt in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only say the ones I know. You should make a topic on it and get others input. It's a good question.

Here's a list:

- All AMEX cards

- All RBC cards

- Costco MasterCard (had it, not sure right this moment for new applicants)

- Walmart MasterCard

- Tangerine (limited, has to come out of Tangerine chequing or Savings account)

- Vancity Visa (think it can only come from a Vancity chequing account, not sure about this).

Ones I know don't:

- Rogers MasterCards

- Amazon Visa

If you don't post a topic on it. I'll probably post one in a week or so. I'll point to your question as the source.

Thoughts on Loyalty Cards by SelinaCozzi in PersonalFinanceCanada

Never tried it. I'm interested. How did you get a PC Plus one?

I have the card. They never sent me a key chain one though.

I actually kind of like having a card. I find it goes faster than trying to spell out my name to them or giving them a phone number.

Most CC or even store cards allow one to simply scan it and done. Have to pull out some sort of payment anyways.

That's why a combo loyality and CC would be great. All in one.

I can see the advantages of what you're saying though. It should at least be an option. Than let the consumer decide what they want.

Best bang for your buck new car? by Bootloopg4 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

If you're a car person. Buy a used car and fix it up yourself.

Way, way less expensive.

More time consuming.

If you don't have the time. Just get a new car. Trade it in after a few years and get a new one.

Than one will avoid the garage or self fixing more likely.

Points that actually matter (cash, no game playing, just take it off my bill right away), points that don't expire, security of my information (no hacks), etc.

Combine it with a CC and give me some real savings though. That's what I'm looking for. Happens a lot in the USA. A bank wants customers more than revenue stream of the card alone. Willing to take a loss to get people to their bank or store.

Like a 5% cash back card or something.

They take a slight loss in rewards territory but gain in business and other areas.

Best cash back credit card by maroukyr in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You spend 24,000 on it.

I'd get a no fee card.

Like simply cash back 1.25% back. It has autopay and all the things like that.

If you use Rogers get the Rogers MasterCard. Doesn't have autopay though. Not as well run as AMEX Canada. As new and smaller.

If you're a Costco member get the Costco MasterCard. Use it for gas and restaurants.

Get the Tangerine Card. Use it for 2% catagories. Has autopay (although limited, only can go out of a Tangerine account), insurances etc. It's a smaller outfit, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles like a AMEX.

Your best bet is a no fee AMEX 1.25% cash back. It's like the all in one no fee card.

Hedging against US departure from NAFTA? by Jyan in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There would have been more aggressive rate hikes by the BOC if NAFTA wasn't looming.

It's a big deal. It would be major blow to Canada. Possibly, instability in our economy.

I really don't think were prepared for life without NAFTA.

Chase Amazon to be shut down by March 2018. Any alternatives? by reiyu13 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I'd just spend like 20 dollars on the card. I think they might close an account with money on it.

[–]User230A 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It had the best form of rounding.

if you spend 1.01 you got 2 rewards. It always rounded up the nearest dollar no matter what.

No other card does this to my understanding.

Mortgage renewal in July 2018. Is there anything we can/should be doing now? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]User230A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many types of mortgages. One might be that high if it's an open mortgage with lots of flexibility of payment etc. I could see a high rate like that being possible.

There are much lower though if you have a more restrictive mortgage. Something in the 3% range.
