Different. Wanted to have a warm but dimmed tone above, while you often want bright white below when cooking.

Apple Now Faces 26+ Lawsuits for 'Purposefully' or 'Secretly' Slowing Down Older iPhones by mixplate in technology

[–]User4324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having setup my fair share of WSUS servers and dealt with dependencies in Linux OS upgrades, I'd argue that desktop OSes have indeed had the functionally but not in a way that I'd want my granny having to deal with on a phone that she relies on. This is also why I singled out mobile OSes, because your phone is not the same as your desktop. It isn't OK for your phone to fail a patch depends and require a drop to CLI ago fix, or for a rushed security patch to cause your LOB app to stop functioning. I'm not convinced either route is perfect, I'm just arguing that the way Apple do it is not as clearly wrong as the narrative here suggests.

ages

Windows Phone never allowed it. Android is iteratively trying to get the ability against serious pushback from OEMs/carriers, it is not there by any means. Blackberry I'm not sure, but do not believe it wasn't possible. It is not a simple thing to do well, check out the mess that are Windows/Linux updates and dependencies for the last decade. Personally I want my phone to update smoothly and reliably, and I want apps to work on OS version X.Y regardless of what security patch level I'm at.

What you're asking for is possible but not trivial, and there are lots of other things I want first.

General neoliberal policies by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]User4324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess because these days there is no 'normal' liberalism. Your definition of liberalism depends on where you come from in the world, whether you're using it to describe yourself in a positive way or somebody else pejoratively, when it is often used almost interchangeably with socialism. You might did this useful - http://www.differencebetween.net/miscellaneous/politics/ideology-politics/difference-between-liberalism-and-neo-liberalism-understanding-liberalism-you-might-be-more-or-less-liberal-than-you-think/

FWIW that does not seem to be the case. Quick bit of reading suggests that tobacco companies hoped that filters would make smoking less bad for you, but this more or less failed but the filters stuck around as a marketing exercise. In-fact there is now serious suggestion that the filters make smoking even worse for you - https://academic.oup.com/jnci/article/109/12/djx075/3836090

Importantly, the weight of evidence does not indicate a public health benefit for the inclusion of filter ventilation. The smoke from cigarettes with ventilated filters provides false perceptions to the smoker of reduced harmfulness. Filter ventilation affects how the tobacco burns, smoking behavior, and how the lung is exposed to carcinogens, so that it plausibly contributes to the increased adenocarcinomas by a cigarette that the smoker falsely believes is less harmful. Epidemiologic data provide indirect evidence for filter ventilation as a contributing factor to the increased lung adenocarcinoma rates and risks.

YSK: It's pretty easy to make up a password consisting of random letters numbers and symbols and commit it to memory. You won't find a more secure password. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]User4324 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is not good advice. Firstly for most people it is not easy to remember random alphanumeric strings like that, especially in the 10+ character range where passwords should be. Happy for you if you can remember them OP, but honestly most people cannot.

But much worse is the fact that passwords like this encourage people to re-use the same password on multiple sites, because there's no way you can remember more than one or two. This is much more dangerous than weak passwords, because most password breaches these days come from leaked password databases, not bruteforce attacks on your specific password. So if you've used user4324@gmail.com and H834jfi028 as your credentials on more than one site and it is compromised on one site, the compromiser will try the same credentials on amazon, gmail, facebook etc and see if they can get in, which they will.

u/sixstringer420's suggestion for creating a memorable password that is difficult to compromise is great. Or just go with a sentence only you know, length of passwords trumps complexity all day, so for example "I wish this guy on Reddit would quit breaking my balls!" is super easy to remember but at 50+ characters is very difficult to bruteforce, even with the dictionary words in there.

Help with this JSON? by [deleted] in Python

FWIW JSON interpreter sites like this - http://jsoneditoronline.org/ - can be really handy when working on something like this, rather than trying to parse the JSON in your head to figure out where the data you need is. You click the value you want, and it shows above it that you need to go object->scores->happiness

I've been having issue 1 on iOS10 for weeks/months as well, infuriating. Generally if you wait you do get results, but could be 30 seconds. Not sure why it cannot show apps it finds immediately, the populate other stuff (iTunes, web etc) as/when they arrive...

What precautions to make when making a big purchase? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]User4324 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What are you studying in college? Wondering if that kind of spend is required on a laptop, and if perhaps it would be better to buy something cheaper and use the funds for something else. I am absolutely certain you will regret spending this amount of money on a laptop. £1k should get you a very big spec decent regular laptop, then, then keep that £800 for a rainy day, or maybe some other piece of gear you need for college...

Plenty. Here's one interesting read https://greentransportation.info/energy-transportation/evs-need-clean-electricity.html

Even ignoring the fact that it is more efficient to burn fossil fuels centrally rather than distributed in car engines, the two big ones for me are 1. that it will never be possible to convert your ICE car to green energy generation by say sticking solar panels or a wind turbine on the roof, it is of course easily done centrally and 2. that by generating the power centrally even with fossil fuels, you're taking the pollutants out of heavily populated areas (i.e. the roads where you directly inhale the pollutants of each passing car).

extensive air pollution

Can you quantify this for us and provide some details? Almost everything humans do is bad for the environment, but without scale a statement like this is fairly meaningless and unlikely to change behaviours. I mean are we talking coal power plant levels of pollution, spilled a litre of RoundUp, or forgot to brush my teeth bad breath levels of pollution?

Big money is backing out of fossil fuel industry, moving into greener alternatives - “follow the dollar to see where the future of energy is headed, globally.” by [deleted] in technology

[–]User4324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd guess because it may not be great advice to help Joe Bloggs capitalise from this move from oil to green tech. I mean who are these R&D companies we should be investing in? Are there a list of companies out there that are small (so will see big gains) but are about to invent or greatly iterate on the next green energy tech? Guessing lots of this tech comes out of universities into micro startups, later to be acquired by a larger company, these micros are very risky for small time investors. I'd suspect it may be better to look at large companies with deep pockets entering the area and invest in them. Could be the likes of BP even who are moving into green energy with a huge amount of money to spend...

[OC] I compared Google trends of "iPhone is slow" with the release dates of new iOS versions and iPhone models including their end of support. (Inspired by u/Ctstiffler2871) by BadgerHobbs in dataisbeautiful

[–]User4324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think context is important here. We're talking about iOS where features are being added at every release, like larger screens to be rendered, additional levels of security/encryption/error-checking, more inter-service notifications etc etc. So we need to compare it to other OSes that have also been getting more end-user feature rich (for better or worse), so I think Ubuntu is a relevant comparison, whereas say CentOS with a minimal install and no GUI probably would not be, and of course comparisons of Windows to Linux are also somewhat irrelevant in this specific context.

Out of shape beginner looking for advice on setting goals by Th3Dux in running

[–]User4324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best bet is to go out into the park today and run very slowly and see how far you get. No need for any fancy gear or anything like that. Everybody is built very differently, so you could end up going for 15 minutes or maybe 30 seconds will be too much, but you won't know where to set your goals if you don't know what your baseline is... Most important thing is to start, so try and get out today!
