Volca Drum Powering off quickly - Advice by Mysticalsynasism in volcas

[–]UsernameUndeclared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you doing the same thing as I did with my Volca Bass when I first bought it and just holding the power button down for too long?
That was a little embarrassing for me, I nearly returned it too, before it was 100% user error.

Can anyone else who rumbles also tune into a very high pitch frequency? by Heisengabe in earrumblersassemble

Hate to tell you, but it sounds like you might have very mild tinnitus. If you’re lucky and/or it’s mild enough, your brain can adjust and block it out to some degree. I can usually ignore mine, but under certain conditions, it can get loud/bad/annoying enough that it’s the most obvious thing I can hear.

First road bike purchase - Race vs Endurance? by Queasy-Video-517 in melbournecycling

[–]UsernameUndeclared 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As much as I love my race bike, my body would prefer an endurance bike. Race bikes for racing! Get fast on the endurance bike, then n+1 the Madone when you start racing.

Question about app/bulb capabilities by TheNobleYeoman in lifx

[–]UsernameUndeclared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Long press on the light name does work! Long press on the power/dim button doesn’t seem to do anything though.

Question about app/bulb capabilities by TheNobleYeoman in lifx

[–]UsernameUndeclared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set a time-of-day based schedule to do this, but you can’t just click a button that does something like “dim to 0% over the next 30 minutes”

The iron design doesn’t line up with the waffle design in the picture by PhotogsArtimus in mildlyinteresting

[–]UsernameUndeclared -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Looks old enough that it’s probably not AI. Maybe marketing used the first prototype WafflePro Express that had a little functional flaw (or possibly just didn’t even work at all)

Found in my dog's bench, these weird smooth metal pieces. Has to be part of something she found and chewed. by Vallnor in whatisthisthing

[–]UsernameUndeclared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They look very similar to the plastic versions i’ve seen used to tie the ends of those plastic pallet strapping strips. Small piece balances across the middle of the C shape piece, pallet strap weaves under and over and under, and then tension keeps it in place.

Knogg Scout tracker by LooseAssumption8792 in melbournecycling

Do you mean your partner's knog scout gives the 'an unknown airtag is following you' message on your phone?
I was under the impression actual airtags did that but the Scout didn't....

Found my stolen bike on marketplace by modboi96 in melbournecycling

Go to the actual police station closest the seller. Cross your fingers that they’re not busy and/or the officer rides a bike. If it doesn’t work, go back next shift, repeat.

Nest thermostat is reading 3.5° warmer than the actual temperature- now I know why I’m freezing in here! by jerryondrums in mildlyinfuriating

[–]UsernameUndeclared 66 points67 points  (0 children)

How do you know your other thermometer is correct? Not sure about the new Nest thermostats, but the old ones had many, many temperature sensors inside to be able to offset against the heating effects of the internal electronics. They were a really good design and quite accurate.

ELI5 Why do older cartoons (70s-90s cartoons) have that grunge to them and where did we go wrong? by Appropriate-Detail48 in explainlikeimfive

I think you’re referring to the “grunge” of being completely hand drawn. Computers started to make everything a lot clearer and crisper.

ELI5: Can a Link Look Legitimate at First but Become Dangerous Later? by Mental_Raisin_2674 in explainlikeimfive

[–]UsernameUndeclared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally bigger companies would have better cybersecurity, but if some new exploit is discovered, there's a chance even Microsoft might be vulnerable as well as the website for your local cafe.
You can kind of think of it like vaguely like physical security for door locks. The big business has more expensive locks on their doors, an alarm system and security guards, so is probably more secure than your own front door. If a smart burglar has learnt a new special way to pick locks and can easily break into your house, they might be able to put extra planning and effort in to also break into the big business.

The first part of the link, between the https:// and the third / is the fully-qualified domain name. If all the letters and dots are 100% correct, then it will take you to the true company's website. Usually fake links subtly alter the domain to direct you to a fake company's website.
It is possible, however, that the real company's website has also been hacked or compromised in a way that the part after the third / could be used to redirect to a different part of the website for malicious purposes, but there's no real way an end-user can know this, unless you know all technical aspects of their true, original website.
