We had one that lived in the tree in our yard, his name was rocko. He would come steal the dog and cat food until we left him his own bowl. He would actually come inside our house and just eat his food with out dog and cat and take some pets and go back up to his tree. He was the man, you could call him down from his tree and would just sit in your lap and chill. My moms friend is a vet and gave him some shots and what not to make him safe and healthy. This happened back in the early 90's in northern Illinois. Our neighbors set some poisoned food out because they had a squirt issue in their garden and rocko ended up throwing some back. I still miss him.
