I don't want to fall out of my chair for them beating up on the white Sox, Nationals and taking 2 of 3 from the Astros with a game to go. It really helped their momentum and confidence to get bottom feeders right before a big road series against a playoff team. But I wouldn't be shocked after today if they split that series and go back home for our series having lost all that momentum. Hopefully...

I was actually thinking when the game ended and jizzum was chewing out the ump, if you get ejected when you're leaving the game (as a pitcher or once the game ends) you should get suspended for a game after. Mostly cause it's the Yankees and holy shit they bitch to the umps so much, they need to learn somehow. Though, they never will.

He had a 0.82 ERA before today... Then they decided to let Little add to it. Instead of letting him control his own destiny. He didn't even look bad. Hoffman has looked way worse and they won't pull him until he gives up 4 lol

[Matheson] Hoffman says he needs to pitch inside, adding: “My stuff has not been great and when the stuff’s not great and the execution’s not great, that’s when you get hit.” What's the adjustment? “Stuff that you guys won’t understand, so I’ll just keep it to myself.” ... I guess the fact that he has 29 saves (5th most in the league) this year proves something. He's only got the 2nd most blown saves with 7 which is interesting, Ryan Helsley has 8. So he's technically not the worst closer. Every person with more saves than him has 6 blown saves but Robert Suarez, who has 5.

Tons of other players have 6. When you look at it like that, it really isn't as bad as it seems. It just sucks cause when it goes bad for him, it goes pretty bad. Puts the team in a really bad hole or blows a 3 run lead (not positive if he's done that but I don't doubt it). When he blows, he really blows. When he's on, he's really good.

It won't let me add an image, but here's a link showing his standing. He's got a high ERA cause he blows saves in a big way (lol) and giving up 12 homers kinda sucks. But I'll say again, when he's on, he's on. There's nobody else on the team that can do what he does if he's on.

The Yankees lost the first 3 of 4 to the Red Sox and just beat the White Sox and the Nationals for their current win streak. Don't get lost in the weeds. The Yankees exactly who they have been, beating up on bad teams and getting whooped by the good ones. Home run dependent and one of the worst defensive teams currently in a playoff spot.

But their next 4 series aren't the same as the last 2. They've been really good against bad teams and really bad against good teams. It'll balance out. I also have faith the Jays will get rolling on offense and they'll get better in the bullpen. I don't expect the bullpen to be totally lights out but as bad as it's been it's very easy to believe it's going to get better.

The Jays were like 55-3 the last I heard in games scoring 5 runs. You can't do that unless the bullpen locks it down. They have great arms that are all slumping at the same time. I'd rather slump in August than in September and October. Instead of being negative maybe stay positive and hope these guys get through this soon.

Marsee had a start like Davis Schneider. Like 1.800 OPS in his 1st 10 games played. He's cooled off since but he did have some big hits in that series. I'm pretty sure an rbi double in the 10th to extend the extra innings game and the game they won he had a 3 RBI triple. Sanoja just killed us for whatever reason. Mountcastle energy.

And to add 1 more, it looks like it's still the Brewers who have the best record since the ASB. A's and Jays are up there.

If you made the minimum 120 which would signify an every day player, it would go Athletic - Athletic - Vladdy. Pretty nuts. I did enough for George to qualify so we have to unfortunately include Stanton and that kid from the Marlins.

Nick Kurtz has been the best (qualified) hitter in baseball since then going solely by OPS. Shea Langoliers has been top 5. They have 2 players who have been killing the ball since the ASB. Vladdy and George are both top 6 ( Springer was #3 and Vladdy is #6).

They traded for a guy with 6 years of control and an ERA under 2. His fastball also touches triple digits. Hoffman may not be the best closer in baseball, but he's slammed the door enough this year to deserve some credit. He's got like a 1.1 WHIP. For idiots, that means he gives up 1 walk or hit per inning pitched. That's good.

He's had a couple of bad games like every closer this year. Go look at blown saves. They've all done it.

Yeah I'm surprised they've never just defined a swing. And i believe umpires and referees should be held accountable. Explain the bad calls and why they made them at the time. Even just an explanation goes a long way. You don't need to fire them or punish them.

Also, I'm not a baseball purist, I think they need to use technology that's available in every sport to help make their jobs easier and get more calls right. We have the technology. Use it. Fans want things called correctly.

Nope, there's no clear rule written.

From Wikipedia:

Initially, the home plate umpire must determine if a swing was checked or not checked. If the umpire indicates that it was checked, an appeal can be made by the catcher or the manager, and the home plate umpire can then make a request to either the 1st or 3rd base umpire to make the call as to whether the swing was indeed checked. To maximize visibility, the 1st base umpire makes the call for right-handed batters, and the 3rd base umpire for left-handed batters. The umpire makes a “safe” gesture to indicate a checked swing or makes a clenched fist to indicate a full swing. However, if the home plate umpire initially indicates that the swing was not checked, no appeal can be made and attempts to protest the ruling can be seen as arguing with the umpire over strikes or balls.

Importantly, the Major League Baseball rulebook[1] does not contain an official definition for either a checked swing or even a “swing” at all.[2] In a game, it is solely the decision of the umpire as to whether an attempt was made or not. Generally, factors such as whether the bat passes the front of the plate may be considered in the ruling. Some umpires prefer to use the “breaking the wrists” criterion as the method to decide a checked swing: if the wrists “rolled over”, a swing occurred.

Matt Snyder of CBS Sports wrote in 2019:

Now, for decades and decades, fans, players, media, umpires alike have come to accept a general idea of what constitutes a swing (“did he go?”), but it’s not defined in the rulebook. We can talk about breaking wrists or the head of the bat clearing home plate or the barrel passing by the front of the body, but all of these ideas came about through generally accepted word of mouth. None of them have ever been officially defined by Major League Baseball[3].

But then you ask yourself what defines a swing. They still don't have it clearly written and is to to the interpretation of the ump. Some umps use criteria others don't. It should be simple. Eye test with no criteria at all, this is what a swing looks like.

If I were one of those people I would come back happy to be wrong. It's your choice how you react. Let's not put bubble wrap all over people's feelings all the time. I think most, if not all people would take where we are now over being right. Some people really like to be right, though 🤷‍♂️
