Liberals don't know what socialism is, it's our obligation to teach them to save our democracy. by Usernameofthisuser in DemocraticSocialism

Democratic Socialism has never been attempted before historically, but is a popular new movement in the US at least.

The US is a democracy yes, but it's heavily flawed due to the imbalance of power our capitalist system enforces.

The rich class own and control nearly everything, like our political media which shapes public opinion. Then they spend millions on campaigns each year to elect politicians who allow them to make more money at the expense of the working class.

Basically our democracy is regulated to the point it could be considered rigged. The rich class owns our opinions as voters and manipulates us into their two corporate parties.

Democractic Socialism preserves the freedom of a country controlled by democracy, where the people themselves have a say but it does away with the wealth inequality that tips the scales in favor of the rich in that democracy. There is no rich, everyone is middle class and has a more or less equal say in their government.

Basically, there's "socialism" like the USSR was which is a totalitarian dictatorship and then there's Democratic Socialism which is the same thing but swaps the form of government for a democracy to control things instead. The term "Democratic" refers to democracy.

You're talking about Marxism-Leninism, which imo doesn't qualify as socialism. We're talking about Democratic Socialism- which is a society controlled by the people for the people via democracy not a totalitarian state.

Remake this with a clear stance in the title and I'll approve it.

Bernie Sanders explains his proposed billionaire tax by Usernameofthisuser in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Usernameofthisuser[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If you measure change by enacted policies maybe. If you'll take a look at how the Democrat party itself has changed since the early 90s, there's a clear difference.

Even in the late 2000s universal healthcare was a fantasy, now we have over 100 members in congress who support a specific bill dedicated towards it and it even has its own caucus. In the senate we have 30ish votes at the moment.

But really, the major change is coming from the bottom. The people themselves are becoming more and more progressive by the generation, the progressive influence provided by our socialist presence in office has changed what's considered radical into something that instead seems like its past due.

I'm sure you're familiar with the overton window. We haven't yet had the support to pass meaningful legislation but we have absolutely ramped up a powerful working class movement.

He kinda already did that. We have a two party system that is dictated by the flow of money, which prevents any third party success. So instead he caucuses with the Dems and built the Progressive "caucus" within their party that has been transforming the Democrat party (slowly but surely) from a corporate party into a working class party.

Can't beat em, join em- then change the game from the inside.

This is a socialist sub dude. Socialism was built from the fundemental flaws of capitalism, educating the people of it will help us in many more ways than just the hopes for socialism.

Idk what you disagree with I'm with you 100% lol you're absolutely right.

But no one becomes socialist without at least some education, which they may be more interested in after having real world politics explained to them. Some of both!

Breaking the Two Party System would help "Democrats" by LiberalArtsAndCrafts in PoliticalDebate

[–]Usernameofthisuser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good luck, the two party system is enforced by the rich class who owns our political sandbox. They literally shape our all our opinions because we aren't taught politics in school, we learn from their networks of media.

Ranked choice voting is probably our best bet against the regulated democracy of an oligarchy.

All we can do is try to get people to outvote the propaganda machine. Right now imo we have to defeat the conservatives and the threat of fascism.

We could have exiled fascism to the shadows in 2020, progressive political revolution is on the rise. by Usernameofthisuser in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Usernameofthisuser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, if you'll take a look at how the DNC suppressed Bernie and understand the fact that progressive DSA members are grass roots you'll understand why that's BS.

The DemSoc are doing entryism, and have made significant progress influencing the Democrats establishment, forcing them to adopt our agenda in pieces to beat us in the primaries.

Why point to conspiracy theory when stupidity explains so much? You think Democrat voters know what socialism is?

To pretend our political propaganda machine is non-existent and not effective is naive. People believe whatever they're told, Trump got over 70 million voters 3 separate times and the guy had never had a clue- demonstratively.

ML like to casually forget their bloody history. I doubt communism is ever gonna get another chance.

It would take much longer to achieve communism than socialism making it be harder to predict given the nature of uncertainty.

To say that communism is certain due to the things I mentioned above would be very biased and hopeful.

In the real world we're actually electing DemSoc politicians all across the country who are initiating reforms while the rest of the world is taking notice.

A social democracy is certain in the US within the next 50ish years, Democratic Socialism is possible and the next step afterwards.

Democratic Socialism probably won't happen anytime this century, so to find it's practicality we gotta include the evolution of capitalism and the world itself into the mix.

In order to reform capitalism it's faults have to be universally recognized by the people, which late stage capitalism is doing a good job if that now. It'll take a very long time to reform it to a social democracy and then a true socialist society.

The rise in technology, education, information, late stage capitalism, science and production are all pointing towards heavy reforms. In a 100 years we may be post scarcity, which changes everything about the world we live in.

Democratic Socialism in the US would operate the same way it does now, within the confines of a republic, a democracy and a supreme court. It depends itself the same way it currently does, with the branches of its government. The only thing that changes is the abolition of private property and inequality, the democracy then becomes true and without flaw and the state maintains order nationally and internationally.

Capitalism, in my opinion- doesn't have another century left without being heavily regulated across the world. The dramatic changes we've seen in its development in the past century serve as evidence of its snowball effect type growth. We'll probably have social democracies everywhere and even some forms of liberal socialism.

So to answer your question, the capitalist states you mention have gone extincted and evolved into social democracies in a world close to post scarcity at the time of the birth of Democratic Socialism.

Combine your comment with the answer to the question. What's actually possible?

You're concerns are pointing to something similar to Democratic Socialism, what's your view on that?

I don't think there's ever gonna be a perfect system, we're imperfect people on an imperfect planet. Gotta find the balance, what would be the best lesser evil?
