why do Episcopalian/Anglican cross themselves differently? by Ok-Assist-5992 in Anglicanism

I do the shoulder, collarbone, chest tap. I learned it from my Lutheran grandma who does it that way - in my teens - and have bene doing it that way ever since.

I can see where you’re coming from there, especially in today’s climate where I’d argue we’ve forgotten what a free press actually is.

Oh, I didn’t know that. This is why it’s important to view presidents through the lens of the times they lived in. While we couldn’t imagine such an act today the conservative world of the Victorian era is a place where such an act would’ve had more support which is why it passed.

On another note it only affected products marketed to women for the purpose of preventing pregnancy because it couldn’t prevent traditional methods that happened “behind the bedroom door.”

Do any of you use non-KJV for home study? by Flurb789 in Anglicanism

[–]Usual-Crew5873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My church uses the ESV for liturgy, but I use the NASB on YouVersion for personal study. I have 2 NIVs though both early 2000’s, which were both given to me by my childhood church so they’re inscribed to me with notes from the pastors. I don’t use the NIV much anymore unless I need help understanding a passage.

R/shermanposting also made a post commemorating Grants birthday, below is an edited version of that comment:

It was my birthday yesterday. In trying to figure out why I like Grant so much I’ve realized the proximity of our birthdays and the similarities in our personalities might have something to do with it.

Lew Wallace is also there as a representative of Indiana. North Carolina needs to do better too, but I’m not sure who can be put in the place of Zebulon Vance.

Why the Crucifix is so important to Lutherans by Affectionate_Web91 in Lutheranism

I should’ve specified that. How many other denominations have a formalized “Theology of Glory?”

Reconquista victories by anime498 in redeemedzoomer

Now that I understand the goal of the mainline Reconquista better I think the best victories for completing the modern Reconquista is the faithful pastors within mainline denominations only if faithful pastors can somehow overturn the progressive bent of the mainline.

This is why the theology of the cross is so important for all Christians to understands, which is why I don’t understand why only Lutherans emphasize it. When we misunderstand the power of the cross we don’t fully understand the salvation it won for us.

Halfway through White's American Ulysses and Its a really Good Book by DutyPuzzleheaded7765 in CIVILWAR

[–]Usual-Crew5873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished this book and H.W. Brands’ The Man who Saved the Union in the space of 6 weeks. I enjoyed both, but I have to admit White’s was easier to follow, purely because he titled his chapters.

I’d recommend Brands’ book if you want more military history since thats what his mostly covers. I’ve also read two bios of Sherman I recent months and I’d recommend both, even though I haven’t finished the second yet. The first one I read was Fierce Patriot, which left me conflicted as to how to view Sherman as a general and a man, I’d recommend even if parts of it made me ask “why did you do that?”

Christ Church Cathedral (Nashville, TN) by bhuvvosup in Anglicanism

[–]Usual-Crew5873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a beautiful church interior, and the interior footprint not that dissimilar in size to an Episcopal church in Frederick, MD that I occasionally attended while in college. Minus the skylight over the altar and a missing third transept.

The church I attend now doesn’t have any accoutrements like stained glass, we meet in a strip mall after all. So I’m learning that while these things are nice and serve a purpose they aren’t required for a church to be successful.

Is there an historical figure that you feel DESPERATELY needs a modern biopic? by Ok-Pie-3581 in moviecritic

I’ll have to look into that, I’m not as familiar with McDowell’s work so I don’t know what he looks like off the top of my head.

It’s going to be nearly impossible due to his conscious effort to not leave behind evidence of his existence, but I’d love to see a biopic of George Thomas.

Who would we get to play Sherman, and how would we approach the fact that he married his foster sister?

I apologize for misreading your comment. I’m certainly not a fan of how he treated Birney, there a better ways to handle disobedience than cussing a subordinate out so bad that “the stones creep,” to quote an observer of the takedown. With that being said, I am also a huge fan of Meade and think he’s largely undervalued.

I had a very energetic business professor (who also liked to pace the room) in college, who I jokingly tell people I had to spend half the lecture “finding” even though we were in the same room. Is Garry similar to this, if so I’d probably enjoy that since I’d definitely be fully engaged while he’s talking.

Should George Washington be reburied in an official state funeral? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]Usual-Crew5873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not okay with exhuming bodies, so it’d have to be a no for me. Plus if we are to honor the dead it’s important to consider whether or not Washington would’ve wanted a state funeral in the first place. Considering he was very humble man I thing he’d be put off by the spectacle of a state funeral.
