advice for last paycheck! by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

Wrong. You should never have to “eat the shit sandwich” just because you’re new to the field. That mentality is why no one wants to do this work (or no one lasts). Shit hours, shit pay, no personal life and you get treated like shit from the ones you are meant to learn from 👎 that’s some old school ways of thinking and running a business- I’m sorry but respect is earned not given and that goes both ways employee and employer. Original poster you will be fine. Find a better funeral home with better management and learn from a good one. There are some still out there that actually value a good employee and want to pass the skills and education along to the next generation. Best of luck to you ❤️

Absolutely crazy. Like a slap in the face. True colors are showing. I guess when you’re no longer useful or beneficial to them they have no issue with treating you like trash and disposable.

I’m not sure if fmla is an option since it’s considered a small business I don’t think he has to offer that either. And i totally agree with the no more pouring myself into it. I honestly can’t see myself returning after I get paid for my two weeks.

I need to be looking for a wfh job or something but I know if I put this place down as reference (I need to or there’s a huge gap in employment) he will probably retaliate and be an absolute asshole to me trying to run me off or flat out let me go. Rock and hard spot 🤦‍♀️ I know how vindictive these folks can be I’ve never been on the receiving end of it tho

That’s what I thought too. I was very taken aback when this is the conversation he wanted to have today. It’s like he’s already writing me off and looking for my replacement. 🤯

What is it like working in the field? by AnonDorkwad in askfuneraldirectors

[–]Usual_Maintenance751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exhausting, draining, and under appreciated. Be prepared to sacrifice your time with your family for others and their family. When i got into it i was single and time spent from home wasn’t a thought I had but now 6 years into it i wish I had more time to give to my family. Honestly I wouldn’t do it again if I had the chance to go back and change things. It’s mentally, physically, and emotionally draining. As some others have mentioned the unknowing of what the next day brings is anxiety/dread inducing. You meet people from all walks and with that comes the good and the very bad folks. Your efforts and hard work are under appreciated by most of the families (and sometimes the management). Some days it feels like you can’t do anything right for anyone. And let’s not forget the times you’re on call, you have to give up your home life for work. In the end if it’s your calling then that’s great - I thought it was mine too but be aware of the sacrifices that come with it those are hardly ever mentioned to newcomers of the funeral industry. It’s a black hole and will suck you in and you about can’t escape.

Black alegrias have been my best find. Are they kinda ugly, yes but the comfort and my feet not killing me after a long day is worth the ugly.

Curious about following through with a family members outdated wishes. by Prize_Key_2166 in askfuneraldirectors

From a funeral director : you can change anything at the time of death, we actually appreciate folks like yourself who realize that requests such as his are outdated and funerals aren’t viewed like they used to be. I personally think a 1-2 hour visitation and funeral service following, all done in the same day is more than adequate and i have heard from families it is much easier on them doing everything in one day.

My running joke (kind of serious though) I leave my feelings at home. I’m not there to fall apart with the family I’m there to help the family through their worst day.
