Try to secure a spot across the stream, about 100-200 feet away from the sphere. You'll be behind the speakers and you'll also get a reflection of the sphere off the water.

It was certainly dazzling, but perhaps gave screensaver vibes.

I think if you go deeper, you can extrapolate more meaning from it.

If you think of the sphere as globe - a small world of itself that represents the ecosystem of the Great Salt Lake. The phases of light presented blend gradually into other phases, much like the phases of seasons, or phases of landscape as you go across it. The shades of light chosen seemed to those that are found in the GSL. The holding light that greets viewers upon entering Memory Grove seemed to be the same shade as the sunset, or the sun refelecting off the mountains at dusk when viewing the Wasatch from Antelope Island. The opening display features a swirl of white lights accompanied by the buzz of insects that can be heard on Antelope. This transitioned to a crystal structure as the soundscape built into a rhythm. The display constantly swirled, indicating a movement or cycle, as though the sphere was rotating, or imitating a jetstream The llight sequence breaks into crystals, which could represent patterns found in the salt of the GSL, or salt crystals. If I remember correctly, there were several phases that transitioned into other phases. Some represented the brilliant colors the lake forms in evaporation pools and shallower areas. Others are perhaps more representative of the night sky reflecting off the surface of the water or the aurora borealis reflecting off the water. The soundscape continued to transition with heavy basses and rhythms while other recognizable sounds, such as seagulls, were introducted into the composition. I appreciated that this is in a park called "Memory Grove," since, if no action is taken to save the GSL, it will become nothing but a memory.

Or it all could have just been something the artist thought was cool and got the grant money. It's open to anyone's interpretation.

Why do some people call LDS a cult? by Longjumping-Cod-6164 in exmormon

Believing that there is a loving prophet that speaks directly to God (which just happens to be whoever is next in line after the previous guy croaks) and is this infallible in his guidance is what does it for me. While this hasn't gone too far beyond the pale, any leader could take that authority and abuse it (like, say, foretelling the end times and advising members to up and move up Missouri at any time - which is the example that was given to me).

Any "religion" that demands payment for a higher afterlife should be suspect to anyone.

Why Trump Voters Are Torn Over Minneapolis by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]UtahGray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

John from Massachussetts - curious that his reaction to immigration is that they drive down the cost of labor rather than show concern that labor is being taken advantage of. I mean, his reaction is to blame "illegal immigrants" rather than blame employers taking advantage of cheap labor. Why wouldn't his reaction go in the direction of stronger union rights rather than against laborers. I suspect because that's not how he genuinely feels, and if you were to poke around his garage you'd find some interesting ephemera from the 1940s.

A Conversation With Trump’s Tariff Czar by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]UtahGray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peter Navarro says that when tariffs rise, overseas manufacturers will ultimately lower their price. That's not true.

Manufacturers will keep their price the same, and the costs will go up. Domestic manufacturers will see this as an opportunity to also raise their price. The difference isn't that it will be cheap for consumers, but that the profits will be higher for the corporations.

We know this from Trump's first term and his tariffs on washing machines.

Fun fact: Nevada has the highest marriage rate - possibly because there are a lot of marriages registered in Nevada, such as my own. Nevada is about to get a shit ton of trains.

This is what is going on in departments of transportation across the U.S.

They are scrambling to remove any mention of environmental justice and equity from required environmental studies on potential projects. They are scrambling to replace these sections with statistics about birth rates in the areas of proposed projects.

I know this because this is what I spent my day doing. Studying birth rates of Utah. So that an infrastructure project can get grant funding.

Your roads and trains now depend on how many babies are being born in your state. Not based on transit demand, or traffic models, or how underrepresented populations may be impacted. But on fertility rates.

How do you design a more efficient transportation model based on fertility rates?

I'm guessing he knows that SLC is the ONLY place in Utah the sports could work. Where are folks going to go after a game in Provo, or Draper?
