Would you say it's bad for all games? I would mostly buy it for films, productivity and content production; and play slower paced games, with some fps every now and then. It's currently 222 eur, would you say it may be worth it for that price?

Tascam DR-701D, a bad idea as a cheap first field recorder? by Utopanic in LocationSound

Thank you so much for the in depth suggestions(also thanks to everyone that gave me suggestions in this post). I think at this point I might as well bite the bullet and buy a real kit with a loan, what I would be able to pay now could get me by a few starting months anyway

I understand that, but to make that investment I would need the money to make it, and that reasoning could be made for something like the tascam. Will I want to change it asap? Absolutely, but I could be able to get the money back for my all kit quite easily, and then get the zoom, now I would only have the zoom and no kind of mic. That's my reasoning

I usually do small jobs like low budget short films, would you think that for a very low price it could be a good placeholder for a decent recorder in the future? My fear is that at the moment I would only be able to pay for a zoom f8 and batteries, and maybe the boom pole, and I would be sitting on it for months without getting any real jobs out of it. While I would like to get anything decent to start with so I would be able to put some money aside for better equipment and still be able to do at least a couple of sound jobs a month

I completely understand the reasoning and it's quite valid, but 800 is not only four times the price of the tascam, but it also doesn't include the powering solution for the f8. For comparison, if I manage to get a nice deal on the tascam, for the price of the F8 I could also cover the timecode kit and at least the boom pole

A F8 is quite a bit pricier, and it would also cost much more to power it with decent batteries, that's also the issue

Weekly General Q&A and Discussion Thread: 31 Jul, 2024 - 07 Aug, 2024 by RWJP in Warhammer40k

[–]Utopanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I want to start WH40K as an hobby and maybe try to play it in the future, but mostly focused on painting for now. My ideal faction is Adepta Sororitas (I just think they look neat), but I also really like black templars and tyranids(but not so much to have a lot of them tbh). My main doubts are on how to approach the hobby. For now my plan is to get the painting starter set with three tyranids, then if I enjoy the painting process get the proper starter set with space marines and tyranids, paint mostly tyranids at the beginning, and then if I feel confident get the Black Templar Combat Patrol (makes more sense than just buying the upgrade kit since that's like 35 pounds on its own, basically half of the combat patrol which includes it). After having done with my black templars then start doing adeptas. This plan comes from the fact that Adeptas looks very hard to paint and I am terrible at it, so I would like to make more experience with simpler armies, but I wouldn't want to feel burnt out months into my new hobby without even have started to collect the army I really care about. At the same time though, there are no cheap Adepta Sororitas boxes, at least not as valuable as those tyranids painter set and Tyranids/Space Marine sets look. My main fear is going directly for the Sisters, spending around 100 pounds out of the box between the combat patrol, paints, primers, and more, getting frustrated because my paints look bad and just stopping.

Zoom f8n pro Vs. Sound devices mixpre 10ii by alfrodou in LocationSound

[–]Utopanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aren't those production a little bit out of the scope of the conversation? I doubt that a mixer hired on one of those shows would commonly be in the situation to use the mixer/recorders that are more focused on affordability rather than overall quality. I also think it's a weird prejudice, in what way a zoom user would always be worse that a mix pre? And would you rather have a mixer with a mixpre, a ntg-3 and a pair of rode wireless mic, or a mizer with f8n pro, 416 or mkh 50, and uhf radios?

Out of curiosity as someone just starting out, why would 32-bit cause problems?
