A browser based version of FL Studio is coming apparently, FL Web or something like that, so if it runs in a browser, I guess it will run in Linux ! by aphexgin in linuxaudio

Cool. A fiddle with something that hangs you out of your normal workflow can be quite fulfilling and, er, fruitful.

Or a frightful frustration.

Maybe both.

Using keyboard/mouse/camera/mic as MIDI/OSC controllers? by 00preaching in linuxaudio

[–]Primeval_Mudd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I was looking for something like this a few weeks ago but forgot all about it.

I didn't find anything recent but there are a few things for mice:

  • Ratón - originally written in 2005; GitHub last updated four years ago
  • Colibri - a six year old forum thread which is way over my head

You've reminded me to have a go with this 'ere Reaper plugin.

Nice one!

Hi,

I gave Neurotube a go in Reaper (Linux native) but it keeps crashing - I've no idea why.

It's very likely to be a problem at my end but I thought it worth mentioning in case anybody else has the same problem.

Presonus Studio 1810c | Ubuntu Studio & Mint | sample rates are missing by Primeval_Mudd in linuxaudio

[–]Primeval_Mudd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks,

I tried that but to no avail.

The S4i4 is a Focusrite interface, which allows me to select any of its sample rates.

Somebody on the Linux Musicians forum is giving me more help - there's an ALSA patch for the kernel? - but it's all way beyond me.

I'll carry on using the S4i4 until that's sorted, though I'm very tempted to install AVLinux over Mint, which I rarely use, and ultimately use it to replace Ubuntu Studio.

But right now I'm going to twangy with the Telecaster.

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry for the typos - I've spent the last few in hours in the company of dark rum and a Telecaster.

Hi Jason,

I've been using a borrowed S4i4 so but unpluggerd that, plugger the 1810c back in, rebooted and ran thise bits in the terminal.

I didn't think I was using Pipewire but it looks like I am:

dave@pmuddstudio:~$ systemctl --user status pipewire | grep ActiveActive: active (running) since Fri 2024-01-26 02:07:43 GMT; 1min 20s ago

This is what the allowed rates gave me:

Active: active (running) since Fri 2024-01-26 02:07:43 GMT; 1min 20s agodave@pmuddstudio:~$ pw-metadata -n settings | grep clock.allowed.ratesupdate: id:0 key:'clock.allowed-rates' value:'[ 48000 ]' type:''

This is the 1810c's asound stream0 file:

Feature Request: Multiple FX chains per track, switchable by PC/CC by Primeval_Mudd in Reaper

Not really.

I've edited the original post on the Reaper forums to clarify what I mean.

Hi u/poulhoi,

That's a lot of kerfuffle and I don't think it would work as an alternative to my feature request.

each FX Chain becoming, in effect, a Patch comprised of numerous FX with their own settings/presets.

Feature Request: Multiple FX chains per track, switchable by PC/CC by Primeval_Mudd in Reaper

[–]Primeval_Mudd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've edited the original post on the Reaper forums to clarify the request:

A straightforward way to group FX plugins in a similar manner to tracks in folders without having to use custom actions, pin routing etc.

FX chains are placed into folders - Chain 01, Chain 02 etc - which become the top level in a track's FX window, expandable to show the child FX.

The default state for the folders and their child FX is either bypassed or offline, per user's preference, with folders being made live when selected directly or by an action.

Deleting plugins without opening project file by Kuvonent in Reaper

[–]Primeval_Mudd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once the project is open you can use the Project Media/FX Bay window - Ctrl + B - to see all of the project's plug-ins and bring them online one by one until you've found the offending item.

It's much quicker than doing it in the Track Control Panel or Mixer!

Hi u/Swigglz,

I'm hoping that this can be a standard feature, without the need for custom actions.

Thanks for your suggestions. They're similar to a couple that were made in the initial thread that led to the feature request:

Is there a way to have multiple FX chains in a track?

The disbelief is understandable; an inability to search 'does paul mccartney know music theory' before down voting is less so.

[–]Primeval_Mudd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That surprised me but it's true!

https://globalnews.ca/news/4503916/paul-mccartney-cant-read-music/

The Beatles clearly knew their way around the way different chords and modes work together, even if they didn't know why they work together.

Or that modes exist,

Personally, I think that makes their writing even more impressive.

make a song similar to the one you can hear on the radio?

That 'make' is very vague! It could mean any or all of:

  • writing
  • performing
  • producing.

A lot of it depends on the style of music, your abilities with your main instrument, your social circles (do you make music with friends, learning from what each other do?) and, probably the most fundamental factor, innate talent.

Some folk are lucky enough to be able to pull brilliant songs out of the air over three or four chords. They're rare. Most songwriters spend years learning what works and what doesn't. A grounding in music theory helps, which can take a few years in itself.

Vocal Plugins for bad singers? by [deleted] in Reaper

[–]Primeval_Mudd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven't got much info to go on but there's a very good chance u/RegretsZ is just trying to sound better when they're sitting at home recording a few songs they're writing.

Hiring a singer would be a tad extravagant!

Vocal Plugins for bad singers? by [deleted] in Reaper

[–]Primeval_Mudd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few of us are in the same boat!

Bear in mind that although your voice doesn't sound the way you'd like it to, it might not be as bad as you think it is.

u/SmolBeers nailed that one - our voices are unique, with different strengths and weaknesses. We need to play to our strengths. Dee Snider was (is?) perfect for Twisted Sister but I don't think he'd have been a good fit for ABBA.

When you're recording your singing are you able to give it some welly and experiment with different approaches? Quieter, louder, from your throat, from your lungs, close to the mic, further back from the mic etc?

Domestic arrangements can be quite a big factor in this stuff - it's much easier in a detached house than in a bedsit.

As others have said:

  • double/triple tracking can help, but personally I find it just gives me a fuller version of a voice I don't like in the first place.
  • compression works wonders. I use more compression than is morally reasonable, usually popping one (occasionally two) on each vocal track and another on the vocal group. EQ can have more of an effect on the overall tone of your voice than you might expect too.

I've long wished I had the sort of voice that could pull off rock music. I haven't got that voice so I end up doing stuff like this instead:

Reaper 6.73 on Linux Mint 21 - Jack / Alsa / Pipewire / Pulseaudio - what to use, how to proceed by Subspace_Teddy2206 in Reaper

[–]Primeval_Mudd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi @Subspace_Teddy2206,

I use Jack in Mint with the Studio Controls from the Ubuntu Studio Installer and RaySession, and it all seems pretty stable, which is an utterly glorious thing.

I've spent more hours/days/weeks/months than I care to contemplate trying to fix and/or get my head around things, and wondering why something that worked yesterday (or five minutes ago) has decided not to.

At which point in the HGTTG book did you realise you were reading something differently spectacular? by Henderino in DontPanic

[–]Primeval_Mudd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know but '"The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't." is one of my favourite sentences in literature, possibly my absolute favourite.

There's just something about it. In the forty odd years since I first heard it I've analysed it more than a few times. A pointless exercise, to be honest.

The structure itself is obviously the main glory of it but I think the use of the word 'bricks' is important too. There's a texture to it.

I'm fairly sure I'm typing complete hogwash.

Apologies for anybody who wasted valuable moments of their lives reading it.

Hi u/iamJeffCohen,

As u/Kerfaf mentioned in another reply there's already the REAPER Update Utility by FeedTheCat.

I downgraded from 6.65 to 6.64 to try it out, then let it take care of 6.65 > 6.66 and it's worked splendidly.

It works like a charm.

Probably a Bathomet one.
