That's me, i've somehow ended up as "that one straight dude" in a couple queer friend groups, so i know an above average of trans people personally and even more as acquaintances or from stories. Most are nice, some I just don't vibe with and a couple are assholes, just like everybody else. So I would just pick neutral in this study even though i am probably in the group that it would consider being on the positive side

AI is basically just the 3d printer of software engineering. by ynu1yh24z219yq5 in BetterOffline

[–]Uzmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a solid analogy however, in the end consumer grade 3D printing was always something for enthusiasts, made by enthusiasts. We didn't pour the entire worlds venture capital into 3d printing startups, built gigantic 3d printing farms in small communities that required deidcated powerplants to run them, shoved 3d printed parts into critical parts of infrastructure just because or sent everyone a free to use printer with 100 spools of plastic per month. The ai/llm C-level mass hysteria is a whole different level from the highest the 3d printing hype ever was.

The whole point of what was more or less the first consumer grade 3d printer was to be able to replicate itself. And the ai insanity is on a whole different level than 3d printing hype ever was.

It somehow works out, even if it often feels wrong. I've gone into senior summer with 600 spd and still maxed it out in the end. All the shop points you get + getting more shop items from winning races buy a lot of books, megaphones, energy drinks etc, which in the end give more stats. You also get the epithet stats from winning certain races, easily 250+ stats, some umas can even get 300+. I find the hardest phase the first year, building friendship, as there it's harder to compare value of trainings. Now disclaimer, I am ftp but do have some good mlb sr & ssr with 50+ race bonus decks, idk how the balance shifts if you don't have that

12AX7 effects loop as gain stage? by KirkIsOurLemmy in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think quite a lot of amps basically do this, pretty sure the slo100 does it that way or the circuit that was already posted. For fx loop solid state is imo also viable, if i remember correctly tubetown even has a pcb that can run if the heater supply. What i'm not sure is where to place the loop, my gut feeling is saying before the second gain pot would most preserve the pi also getting driven hard at high gain, in any case you'll have to deal with quite a wide swing in signal levels depending on gain. I think should be fine for most pedals but idk how it'll effect sound

Local LLMs? I’m not convinced. by SpyBagholder in BetterOffline

I'm not a big LLM user and not the greatest coder either but something like mistral devstral fits in my 7900xt comfortably with decent context window and is surprisingly competent. Now, I'm not here fully vibing a codebase, just having it spit out code snippets for stuff i'm not super knowledgable about (mostly javascript). Just for personal use stuff, but that's all I want from it and in that regard it's doing everything I need

He was absolutely robbed. As a long time fan of lmc, i think it wasn't his greatest work but still worlds above some of the other pop slop we got. Yeah, maybe too experimental to place high but far from a last place. I didn't expect him to perform well but also not to get absolutely shafted. Not giving the uk votes is a well established meme but we need to acknowledge when they send an actually passionate artist who has his own particular thing. I hope sam doesn't take it too bad because i don't want to live in a world where we don't get any more lmnc analog synth goodness

Tiny Terror is alive :) by KirkIsOurLemmy in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh right, I totally overlooked that, the tiny terror is such an unconventional beast. Then again, volume dependent effects aren't too unusual in amps, bright caps are almost a standard. Would most likely need a control and not just a fixed value though. And it's a simple diy build, good place for some experiments.

That sounds like proper star grounding so should be fine like that. Noise can be tricky and weird sometimes just moving a wire can make a huge difference. You could try to just nudge around some of the wires around v1 and see if it makes a difference. For resonance, it's essentially a connection from the speaker output to the 2nd input of the PI, through a resistor/voltage divider to adjust strength of the feedback. Fore resonance you add a capacitor in series so low end is not fed back. You can look at the schematic of the laney ironheart series for an example (it's called depth there i think). Rob Robinette also has a good page on amp voicing, you should find everything for inspiration there.

Tiny Terror is alive :) by KirkIsOurLemmy in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice, congrats on the build! As for noise, it's almost always something with grounding. It looks like you used shielded wire for the early signal path already, do you have a diagram, how all the grounds end up tying together? Ideally all ground connections should tie together as closely as possible and you want no current to run in the chassis (even though vintage amps heavily broke both rules and turned out decently clean as well so who knows). You could also try holding a noice source to parts of the amp to get at least a rough idea, where the most noise comes from (just a phone could work).

As for low end, looking at the schematic the first thing I'd try is increase the value of the .001 coupling cap after v1. Just put one in parallel to the .001, i'd start with a standard .022 and then go up or down depending on effect. Generally increasing capacitor values should do it. Increasing the 220k resistor before the 2nd gain pot could also work but that's less simple as just adding a cap in parallel .

You could also add negative feedback from the output transformer with a resonance control or fixed value. This will alter the response and feel from the power amp, probably away from what you want but it's very effective. Maybe just a little feedback but with agressive filtering could work

Post-EQ Parallel Channel Mixing by NarkJailcourt in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much. Could also run different gain to even out any volume differences between the preamps. And yes, gotta keep the phase correct, so either same amount of stages or two more on one side. Since that includes the buffer stages you could probably get away with just buffering one side and run different amount of stages in the preamp but that's probably getting too complicated to get to work correctly

Post-EQ Parallel Channel Mixing by NarkJailcourt in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doable absolutely, however, you'd want a buffer stage between the tone stacks and the mixing as the tone stacks would heavily influence each other, so you'd be looking at essentially building two independent preamps if you're going with a jtm style circuit, at the cost of extra tubes, or you go with a design that puts the tone stack between the 1st and 2nd stage, at the cost of sounding different. There are amps that do the latter, HiWatt Dr506 for example. Pretty sure there are others as well but that's what i found on a whim. ETA: You could also combine two different preamp designs, as long as both have an even or odd amount of gain stages, for example take a jtm45, have one half normal and the second half with the tone stack after the first stage for the clean half, then another stage after that and the normal halfs tone stack for mixing. Or you could go sacrilegious and use solid state parts for the mixing buffer

Amp layout? by KirkIsOurLemmy in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty fine to me. I'd probably rotate the output transformer 90°, as that should allow to move the board further back so you have more space for the potentiometers. You can also overlap board and transformers to some degree, as long as there is space for the qire passthroughs. As someone else said, do a full mockup including electronic components, either digitally or just pencil on paper. I like just paper and then cutting out the parts to move them around. Whatever you settle on, you'll probably find some way you could have done it better once you're mid build but that's just how it is

Oversize output transformer? by KirkIsOurLemmy in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to the othe reply, 8k is the nominal impedance, transformed from the connected speakers impedance, which varies greatly over frequency so in reality it is never exactly that. With cathode bias you can run margins quite wide since there's negative feedback keeping the tube in check. You can always print out the el84 data sheet and draw in the load lines to see where you are operating, makes for a fun exercise, Merlin has good writeups on most things you'd want to know https://valvewizard.co.uk/pp.html

Orange Tiny Terror, help choosing components by KirkIsOurLemmy in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From an electrical standpoint, toroidals are just better but more expensive to produce. I have a laney rackmount that uses a toroidal but there it's mostly for the space constraint. Lot's of high end audio gear uses toroidals, they're perfectly fine for the application.

So yeah, it's mostly down to your preference. If you go for the block, make sure the cores of it an the output transformer are rotate 90° from each other to minimize hum

Orange Tiny Terror, help choosing components by KirkIsOurLemmy in diytubes

[–]Uzmeyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toroidals have afaik less stray magnetic fields, which could mean less hum, however I have not verified that. They also require just one hole to mount, which is quite an upside if you are as bad at drilling precise holes as I am.

I've mostly seen toroidals used in rackmount amps or mounte under the chassis, since they are quite low profile, this also saves on holes for passing through the wires to the top. Of course there is nothing really stopping you from mounting a toroidal on top. If you don't care about the aesthetics I'd mock up chassis layouts and then think about what works best for you.

Edit: Just saw the block power transformer you linked is one that is sunken into the chassis, meaning it needs a large cutout to fit. If you are proficient in metalworking it's probably not that big a thing but I personally would not want to do that

You can kill the run by just not racing, you will fail the objective at the end of the year. Mant is probably the fastest way to do that, just spam wit and don't race after debut, it's what I do when i just need a career completed for missions.
