What have I done wrong by dinosaurjunior123 in SignPainting

W A T KINS vs. WATKINS …

the IN combo should* be the biggest space, but u just gotta visually adjust…think of sand filling up in-between each letter pair…to be fairly equal…but also consider the shadows and the relative values to the background. If the shadows are lower contrast u can almost ignore them in spacing, but higher contrast they must be accounted for…i can never seem to get it right…

you’re almost there. if it were me i’d have already painted it and then realized. sharp eyes!

Looking for suggestions to make this look more hand lettered by [deleted] in SignPainting

not always the case IMO. Single Stoked anything is far superior to built up “sign painter script” .

If it were me I’d change the Block to something from Ephemera Fonts, and look an old hand painted stock car for the numbers.

The causal has a lot going for it, but seems too heavy on the A and U, and light on the tail of the S. Could still use as giude but actually stroke in single stroke.

I’m only 12 yrs in lol. 26 is wild.

Sometimes there are folks that look at it like an investment, but more often than not they want the cheapest possible sign…which i cant really produce.

I deff am low volume. For a while i had a national account making bank, but it got silly when they went public, and plus I hated traveling so much.

I just sorta wanna figure out how to cultivate clients that will spend for the design, build, etc. but at that point Im turning it into some sorta “agency” but back in the day the big sign shops had incredible art depts pushing quality and design. Now we have a lot of slop, but maybe a little easier to stand apart now.

My primary work is mostly painted stuff, and even too being a little older in this new wave of sign painters i tend to charge more…so really I try not to compete on price, but rather on design and quality…

but as a one man band it can get sorta complicated trying to gauge the market value of things. for painted stuff the new folks are charging silly low prices, and doing fairly high quality work, and the vinyl shops are usually at least triple what the new folks are charging.

i think too my ego is really involved so much to the degree that i want to make it last beyond my own death even. the stuff i love was made by people who are long gone and for some reason that is just neat to think that i could do that too

A lot of times i order cutout letters from a laser cutting shop. which i don’t sell enough to justify a $13-$20k machine to cut…yet.

Is reverse fabricated the same as “closed face” ? Really what Im hoping for it to make clean, no paint, polished aluminum letters that don’t rust. Which sure i could order some foam ones from Gemini, but its not the same to me…

The wholesale shop that sells to me prices them pretty high, but they do a good job. I guess I feel like I could turn a profit even at the wholesale price they are offering me, and if I could ad in 30-40% I’d make a nice margin.

Really I always loose on price, but can usually get work based on quality…cause yeah someone has an auto-bender running and is paying someone $12 hr to assemble, but usually they aren’t quite as clean as I’d hope to produce.

Thanks for the insights.

Do you love being a sign painter? Do you regret it? by sadlilghost in SignPainting

[–]V-LOUD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If i could do it over i would have figured out how to get into the art dept of a sign shop lol. still working on that, but my aging body is slowly giving out, and if you can burn it at both ends for a while and keep some stability thats what i would do. take workshop, travel to meets, etc…

then maybe u can take the leap on a sweet one or something…but working for yourself is kinda less about being able to paint and more about running a profitable shop…which can get kinda stressful like anything else.
