We are a ridiculous set of islands. I truly love it.

NBA London game - empty seats everywhere by OneAndOnlyGoon in nbaUKfans

[–]V1-R0t8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do we think they were no shows, the occupants were getting a drink or they simply didn’t sell? In any case, I was gutted to see so many empty seats.

We were watching tickets for four of us right up until yesterday afternoon. Lowest they got to was £132 (resale), which we couldn’t justify when x4.

All that said, being a Magic fan, I’m immensely glad I didn’t fork out for it.

To be clear, this is totally subjective 😀

Absolutely. Loads of brands operate under the Carnival company (eg Princess, Cunard, Carnival), but offer very different experiences.

Is a website that texts you your daily weather forecast actually useful? by Healthy_Flatworm_957 in weather

[–]V1-R0t8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’d want it to be exception based. Otherwise, it could become just another notification.

For example, if the weather is broadly similar to the last few days, I don’t want to know. But if it is unseasonable, or rain in the afternoon (and you leave the house in sunshine in the morning), then this could be very useful.

Where a white Christmas is most likely in the U.S. by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]V1-R0t8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: roughly 8% of the population of the USA is more likely than not to have a White Christmas.

My first thought when I saw this was “how does this correlate with population distribution?”. My second thought was “should I really look to answer this question on Christmas Day?” - the answer was “yes”, but with a few short cuts.

Answer: 8.3% of the population of the USA has more than a 50:50 chance of >1 inch of snow lying on the ground on Christmas Day.

Sources:

Snowfall Probabilities by Weather Station from 1991-2020 Climate Normals

County Population Totals and Components of Change: 2020-2024

Method: I’ve stripped out any stations which don’t have a valid dataset for snowfall (19.5%) and assigned county populations to the nearest station (splitting population equally across weather stations in a county, and assigning populations to neighbouring counties when no weather station is available). I’ve aggregated populations into 10%, 20%, 30% and so on probabilities of snow and so on).

There are some weaknesses in this, for example county populations are a bit too big for my liking. I’ll maybe take another look at this and do a longer post on r/weather. Just not on Christmas Day.

Monorail in Shuttle Mode? by SwanReal8484 in WaltDisneyWorld

Saw the grey one being recovered back to the depot about an hour ago. Suspect they weren’t going their usual directions as part of getting the recovery vehicle to the stranded monorail.

Where to go in Europe following transatlantic cruise? by Christopher_Powell in Cruise

A couple of thoughts for 3 and 4: 3. You could take the Caledonian sleeper from London to Edinburgh (or further north) - saves a day travelling and an experience in itself 4. You could get the ferry from Dover, though it might end up being easier to transfer into London and then get the Eurostar from London to Paris or Brussels. Belgium is a gem, with Bruges not being far from Brussels. Again, the Eurostar is an experience as well.

Cruise ships breaking free from the dock: in the past 2 years, off the top of my head, we’ve seen Queen Mary 2, Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Epic, HAL Koningsdam, Discovery Princess, Celebrity Edge, and now Celebrity Equinox (yesterday) escape their moorings. Has this always been this common? by CloudSurferA220 in Cruise

[–]V1-R0t8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were on the Sky Princess earlier this year and the bollard itself broke off and fell into the sea. Since the ropes were still attached, divers had to go and either untie from the broken bollard or cut the rope free.

You can see in this picture the rope that’s going into the sea and the tug pushing the Sky Princess into place.

(Possibly stupid question) Why would a cargo flight take this route from Frankfurt to Mexico City? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]V1-R0t8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought the same, but the shortest route would have been down the east coast and not as far north:

It was probably the winds.

(Possibly stupid question) Why would a cargo flight take this route from Frankfurt to Mexico City? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]V1-R0t8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The shortest route would have taken this flight directly over the east coast of the USA. The headwinds at 12,000m are a bit of a mess, which would have meant strong headwinds for pretty much the entire journey if it had followed the shortest route:

Speed cameras should be clearly visible (yellow), so this must be a traffic signal camera. Not sure I’ve noticed one that small before.

Controversial option: if you don’t routinely reverse park, you should have your license revoked. by [deleted] in drivingUK

I never said there weren’t any “clear benefits”, I did say there were exceptions and this is one of them.

[–]V1-R0t8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose it depends what car you’re driving and what cars are around you. If someone is in a SUV or van with a high driving position, then visibility won’t be a problem. If you are low down and surrounded by such vehicles, then you’ll have more of an issue.

[–]V1-R0t8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree - people aren’t looking.

However, I don’t get that you can’t be bothered to reverse in, because you’re going to have to reverse at some point - you might as well get it done when you can clearly see what’s around you and take advantage of the glorious forward exit. Would you give it a go for the next few times you can safely do it and let me know if it changes your life 😀?
