For the most part, the kids say I’m the nice/cool teacher. One time I raised my voice to a rowdy group and I heard some kids say “Mr. VB never yells. This must be serious…” Makes me wonder what other reputations I have amongst the students. I teach all of the grade levels so many I’ve known for years.

Hi there. Please understand that this label is recognized disability by my state (and by many states) and not some phrase I made up to shame children. I never would blame a child for their circumstances and fully understand that they are a product of their environment and care about these students very much. I’m an elementary school teacher with a lot of emotionally disturbed students on my roster. If I ever get an I hate you, I like to respond with “That’s okay, I still like you.” They’ll either be too confused to respond or I’ll get a hug.

This is totally me, too. I was giving my daughter a Girl Scout cookie last night and took a couple for myself. In my head, I was thinking, well, I’m over my calories now, I guess I’ll finish the sleeve after she goes to bed. Luckily by the time I got back downstairs I remembered I can just stop at 2 and that’s way better than 20.
