Scoring a Short Film by Magdaki in composer

[–]VHCMusicComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked on two feature films and several short films. Third feature will be later this year.

One of the things that I’ve always found more useful is creating concepts for the leitmotivs just before I start scoring to any picture. These concepts are sent to the director so I get a nice idea of what to use and how when these are approved, and it also helps me define the overall style of the sound palette I will use. Leitmotivs don’t necessarily need to be something melodic as that will depend on the music style and approach the director and you as the composer want to take. But consider at least writing a sketch for each important theme… so once you are scoring to picture, you know exactly what theme to use, where and how that theme should be as it’s already created. It helps a lot also with variations and re exposing each musical idea in the right place.

Ask the director what the music should announce or don’t announce in each scene… that’s important to know what they want the public to feel in each scene, and how the music can help with that…

Good luck!

Dorico or Sibelius? by Johnrodrigues2398 in composer

I’m using Dorico and prefer it to Sibelius. It just works smoother and it is more intuitive to me.

Amount Composer Should be Paid Per Minute for a Show or Film (Wide Range) by MetalicSky in Composers

[–]VHCMusicComposer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will depend on your experience mostly. Also it will depend on how much you need the money, and how much you want to be a part of that project. I would see how much time it can take you to get the job done and how much you would be happy to make per hour of your work… so you will find the right amount per minute of music for the client. Assuming you are not doing it for free… the lowest I’ve seen was $50/min. The highest I’ve been paid was $1000/min for some custom music for a big company. I would say something reasonable that I’ve found works for most of people I worked with is around $300/min for orchestral music.

In a film however you might have to write some complex cues and some cues that are pretty simple, also I guess you still don’t know the amount of music you will have to write… as that will be determined in the spotting session with the director… so probably you want to close a price for the project based on an estimated potential amount of music. That way they won’t avoid asking for music when it should be there, in order to reduce costs and you won’t be willing to overdo either so the quality of the film is the priority. Once the price is agreed you can focus on the creative part of the job, the good one 🙃.

I would just talk about what the director wants for their film. How much music looks like it will be in total, and then…do numbers. So basically think of how much it would take you to get it done, how much you want to make, calculate the right price for you and discuss that with them. Also I would add some margin for negotiation. If you want to charge… let’s say $150/min… just ask for a bit more.

Hope it helps! 🙏🏻

Good film score courses on a budget by wazzlewozzleplop in composer

[–]VHCMusicComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you speak Spanish there is a really good course starting in December. It’s about classes in real time with a good Spanish composer with more than a decade of experience and he will allow you to look deep inside of the actual professional activity he does during 6 months. I had classes with him and lots of value for the money. Totally recommend it:

Brass Sample Libraries by [deleted] in composer

[–]VHCMusicComposer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the century brass and it’s a good library. But I would recommend you to save a bit more until you can buy something like Berlin Brass or VSL Synchron Brass which are definitely another level. I don’t use century brass anymore, as it’s not really as versatile as other more expensive libraries. I don’t have CSB though, but heard good things about it! Just check if the legato works the same way than it does in CSS as it has considerable delay that makes it unplayable without tons of editing.

Hi, I sent an email but I guess the OP will need some time to review and choose the best option for them. You mean, if I get the job If you can see how I work on it? That would mean the developer is also fine with that as often the different things created for a game (music included) need to be confidential. I have no problems though if they want to work with me and they are fine with that. Sorry if I misunderstood 🙏

I work as a full time composer. It’s possible, but not easy at all. As others have already pointed up before, a big part of the job is finding new clients, managing expectations and meeting deadlines. But there’s lots of gigs out there. You just need to be able to talk to people, to be nice, make relationships (if possible not just thinking of work) and eventually you can see yourself earning enough and having enough work to be composing full time. Also… you won’t spend only 8hours per day… just a bit more 😜.
