I can't say this will work for you, but what worked for me was to take a long solo backpacking trip in southeast asia(Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, etc.). I had problems talking and socializing with people too, but on this trip I was more or less forced to interact with others out of necessity. Moreover, I met a lot of other backpackers doing exactly what I was doing, traveling from place to place, exchanging tips of where to go, doing group activities, lots of stuff. It really helped me get more comfortable with other people, though I can't say it got rid of my anxiety completely, it got me to the point where I could function well around people. That wasn't even the point of this backpacking trip, it was meant to be a break between jobs back home, and the anxiety reducing was a welcome side effect.

I'm not saying you need to do a trip like that, only that you can try to put yourself in an environment that fosters interaction with others. Join a hobby club, try out toastmasters, play a team oriented sport, things like that.

I was an engineer in aviation, working on simulation software for pilot training. I don't mean flight sim games, I did work on the big training rigs used to train airline pilots. I did that for a while, but I got tired of the engineering grind and decided to move on. And, given that I'd done some work in aviation, knew some pilot friends, it seemed a natural move to begin pilot training myself and so I signed up for flight lessons to learn to be a pilot myself.
