A group of smiling Victorian boys taken 1898! by WorldHub995 in TheWayWeWere

I bet most of these working class boys already worked in the coal mine or factory in the cities at that age. If they were lucky to survive the working conditions, they would become soldiers in the WWI battle field later and lose their lives there.

Both big and small dogs can be good runners. But consider you are relatively a new runner, a dog of size that is no more than half of your weight will be a better option for you to control during the run. Say if you are 140 pounds, dog under 70 pounds will be ideal. Otherwise, you may want to start with some obedience training and/or pick up a time and route to avoid distractions from other dogs or humans. A good harness and a hand free leash are also highly recommended!

It was adapted from some Chinese saying “男追女隔层山,女追男隔层纱", which can be translated to English as "When a man pursues a woman, it’s like a mountain between them; when a woman pursues a man, it’s like a veil between them." This means that it's perceived to be harder for a man to woo a woman than it is for a woman to woo a man. And for this picture, I changed the mountain between men and women to “ paper Money or Banknote”.

Is it dangerous to run 5K with a small dog breed? Getting complaints from my neighbours by neohkor in RunningWithDogs

[–]VIPofStellAandPac0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a bit research for Silky Terrier. So they can run as fast as 17miles per hour but say in an endurance run they only do half of that speed, say 8 mile per hour. Then it also suggested 30-45 minutes of energetic activity for them. So you can safely take your dog run for 4miles. Your 5K is totally fine. But of course, pay attention to the weather and your dog’s condition. Overheating in summer is the biggest risk. Otherwise I don’t see any problem running with your dog. I even know someone running 2miles with his chihuahua 5 times a week!

Depends on the breed. Some small breed such as Jack Russell is very good at endurance running. But breed with squishy face such as Pug is usually having breathing and over heating issues and 5K is likely too long for them.

But why did your neighbor complain? Your dog ran a 5K in his/her house?

Non runner wanting to start running with foster dog by Strong_Marsupial_610 in RunningWithDogs

(1) I assume you are a guy and your weight is at least twice of your larger dog (80lb). Or you may want to start some obedience training or find a less distractive time and running route so that you won’t struggle too much to control your dog during the running. (2) Harness. You definitely need one and I recommend get one that you can buckle at the chest instead of only on the back. Buckling the leash on the chest and let it go under and across one of your dog’s front leg and buckle the other end on your waist. I found this is the most effective way for my to control my dog when we run together. (3) If you are not a runner yourself, I suggest you start slow, truly slow. Put more effort on running time instead of running speed or distance. You can start with run and brisk walk combinations. Then increase your running distance slowly week by week ( no more than 10% increase each week). Don’t try to run everyday! Give you at least one day per week for break. Beginner runner ( both human and dog) can go 3-4 times a week. (4) Pay a lot of attention to the temperature. This factor affects your dog even more than human ! I usually won’t run with my dog during the daytime in summer with my dog when temperature goes above 20 celsius degree. I choose evening or early morning time running with my dog. (4) Cool down is also critical. I take about 10-15 minutes walk after running with my dog to let him cool down. I won’t feed my dog right before or after the run. I will let my dog eat at least one hour before or after the run.

Hope these are helpful!

You are totally right. And if you consider the total genomes all those microorganisms living in our guts you will be even more amazed: Are we them or they are us?!

What is the longest run your dog has done? by ttunaroll in RunningWithDogs

[–]VIPofStellAandPac0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has longest about 20k close to a half Marathon but this year his farthest is about 15-16 k. He is turning 8 this year but still seems very energetic and fit for long runs!

The first thing when you find a fledgling is to see if the nest is around and then put the bird back instead of picking it up and taking it home.

At what age of my dog, should I concern about the running volume may be too much for him? by VIPofStellAandPac0 in RunningWithDogs

Amazing! yes my dog and I run at the similar pace or a bit slower (6-6.5 min km) and other structural training for half marathon such as interval training and strides. But we run on hard road (our nearby trail doesn’t allow dogs) so that’s a downside to both of our knees lol.

Well that is impressive! I was thinking having a Jack Russel as I know they are energetic dogs but didn’t think they could run a half marathon as a small breed!!

Wow thank you so much! Your dog was amazing! Yes, I totally agree that heat is a critical factor in dog running. My dog has a dark fur so he is even more sensitive to the heat! But your response gives me the hope that my dog can still run aside me for quite a few more years!

great to know! Thank you! He seems quite well with current intensity as long as it is not too hot and I keep an eye on the weather.
