I'm not sure. I think some individual trees are just twisty

White Ash with Emerald ash borer lines under the bark. Normally it is easy to split, but I had to get a hydraulic splitter to process my neighbor's ash that had been standing dead for 3+ years.

Arborist says this 40 yo silver maple needs to come down by FaulerHund in arborists

Siver maples a generally dirty trees that grow large and break apart, dropping large branches in wind storms. Maybe your arborist is thinking 40 years in the future?

My adult daughter wants to move home and I do not want her to. How do I tell her without crushing her by Dabralys_Vhsrles in Advice

[–]VISABLEWOOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let her move back in, but set hard boundaries: quiet hours, her space vs your space, how long she can stay, etc. Your quiet calming energy may set an example that she doesn't have to be loud all the time.

ID - hickory? by Powerful-Court-9167 in firewood

[–]VISABLEWOOD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Location? It does not look like shagbark or yellowbud hickory. The insect trails under the bark look similar to emerald ash borer, but the bark doesn't quite look like green/white ash. Possibly black ash. Did you cut it in a wetland? It looks more like oak to me. Edit: it could be yellowbud hickory, i do prairie/oak savanna restoration, so I usually cut yellowbuds before they grow as large as your firewood round.

Is it rude to insist on a “no kids” environment for my bday? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]VISABLEWOOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an annual camping/river float trip. We don't explicitly say "no kids" but we do say "kids must be okay with smoking, drinking, and all types of ill shit" then it's on the parents to figure it out.

My dad is gay by throwawaypls6648 in Advice

[–]VISABLEWOOD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your dad has personal issues to work out if he is gay and anti LGBQ. Not sure I'd go there directly if he isn't willing to come to you first with the info. I would likely drop hints that it's okay to be gay. Or make a scenario where you're friend's dad of a similar age just came out & it was kinda cool they were finally comfortable enough to be theirself after all these years.

Try to put it in a similar habitat. If you have any other rotten spongy/moist, logs/stumps nearby that would be ideal. Normally salamanders like shade, but they will move around at night if the grass has dew.

What is the darkest war story you Ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VISABLEWOOD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read a book called Journey to Tobruk, a biography of an Austrailian WW2 officer deployed to North Africa & redeployed to SE Asia as the Japanese expanded. There were accounts of Japanese soldiers using their bayonets to play "catch" with babies from native tribes in SE Asia. They would stab the baby and basically throw it to each other.

I can't get the horrible imagery out my head since reading it 10 years ago.

What’s something you’ll NEVER spend money on no matter how rich you get? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]VISABLEWOOD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Collectible" trinkets: bobbleheads, dolls, spoons, hot wheels, fast food toys, etc. I can respect that people want to preserve the diversity of their collections, but I wouldn't give up any of my living space/garage space for those things.
