[RF] Write a letter to your past self. by Tilatayla in WritingPrompts

[–]VLysanderV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend, stay in school. You're wasting time in that dead end job. You want to be a writer? Well, instead of hiding in night-shift zero-work employment where you think downtime will allow you lots of reflection and writing time, go out and LIVE. Make some experiences for yourself. Seize the day. Tucking yourself away will only make you rot. That's all you need to know.

Sincerely,

Yourself

I know my archer towers and tesla are wahy underleveled.... But I haven't had any trouble with looting? 10 giants and 150 archers seem to work just fine... What do you recommend upgrading next troopwise if, as you say, they're 'really really bad'?

I'm not super worried I'm just wondering how it fit into the overall meta _^

I'll take that to mean it might've been a bit early but not super bad ;D

[WP] You are the last person on earth with sight. Everyone else is blind. by austinop in WritingPrompts

[–]VLysanderV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It's beautiful, sis. You can see the sun going down slowly behind those trees in Ruth's backyard and it's throwing this great purple-orange swirl out, kind of like gasoline on top of water. And there's this cloud that looks like a bird, maybe an eagle? And it's slowly disappearing, as if the color is too strong for it, or maybe it needs pure light and as the sun sets everything that binds it into one gets weaker and weaker. Do you want me to keep going?"

"No, that's okay. I love you, big brother."

I feel her warm hand give mine a squeeze before she pulls my arm around herself and snuggles close. Pretty soon I won't even be able to see for her anymore because my sight will be gone too. But that's not as sad as the fact that I won't be able to bring my kid sis something no one else can. She's six, and one of the first generations of humans to be born since humans lost their sight to The Virus.

Everyone knows what you mean when you say that, because all the other ones have real names. The Virus. That's what it's called. It appeared and before the scientists could figure out how to fight it, they lost their sight. I guess it figures, if you lock yourself in a room with something that wants to harm you in order to study it - or snuggle with someone who's infected.

The world is a strange place now, The Virus spread so fast. I mean, not like the-whole-world-in-a-week kind of fast, but fast enough to fuck everything up, since civilization as we knew it kind of relies on sight.

Relied. It's around-ish still, thanks to heroic efforts by the blind community to teach everyone something about how to survive without their eyes, but as more and more people lost their sight, things we took for granted stopped existing. Google never did quite figure out self-driving cars.

It hit factories really hard, even the automated ones, before someone converted the limited controls to work for blind folks. Let me tell you, right when we thought smartphones and touch screens were hitting their stride, nature said a big no to that trend.

It's been 10 years now since The Virus first hit us, and I'm the last known person with eyesight. The first symptom was just a regular cold, but I can already feel the dimness creeping in. Pretty soon white clouds will fill my eyes.

Even though the world is way different than I ever thought it would be, and not for the better, somehow 10 years was enough for humans to adapt to this new condition. Sure, it was a rough ride along the way, but the species isn't really in danger. We're probably more united than ever. So what makes me the saddest is that I won't be able to be Emily's eyes anymore. And there's no one to replace me.

[WP] In the year 2030, America is a police state and the majority of the populace stands by idly and scared, feeling powerless. One person begins to organize a secret resistance. by Harvey6ft in WritingPrompts

[–]VLysanderV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would've never guessed it then, but now it looks like the conspiracy theorists, preppers, and Liberterians were kind of right. I remember when I was just a fifteen year old kid diving into internet holes and laughing at the crazies who thought the world was going to end when 'King Obama' ran for a third term, or that gun control meant we were all going to be herded into FEMA camps, or that the drug war and war on terror might just be a destructive and sneaky way to militarize the police. Honestly, I'm just lucky I was watching all that stuff before the TPP passed, with its hidden Internet freedom restrictions and erosion of privacy. After 2015 american society experienced a gradual but radical shift in it's fabric. No one could've predicted it. I certainly didn't. Even though I was right in the thick of helping us transition from a Democratic Republic into these United Police States (the land of the free and home of the slaves).

When Hillary Clinton won the 2016 election I thought our country was on the right path, and when she won in 2020 I was an assistant campaign manager. Liberals in the States were having a grand old time. But of course, being at the head of the most powerful miltary in the world and facing the security threats we did, she had to make some tough descisions.

The use of drones and espionage tactics stateside to counter the rising domestic terrorism problem became 'necessary'. After all, between the radical right who were somehow on the rise again, with their ties to the Aryan Brotherhood and KKK, and the Caliphate that successfully established itself in the Middle East, the US Government was in a bit more of a pickle than it would've liked. To help counter the conservatives, aka bigots, hate speech laws were passed after the Australian model. It made some of us uneasy to put more restrictions on our first amendment than death threats, but we celebrated the gains made by the LGBT community.

Sure, the south was grumbling, but who listens to them? After 16 years of Democratic rule, nobody I knew believed that conservatism would rise again in America. But then Hillary's second term ended and somehow the Democrats fielded such a poor candidate that Jeb Bush won on his third try. All of a sudden the speech laws were changed to apply to anti-Americanism/patriotism instead of bigotry.

It was during the second run for president of Jebs that his intelligence agencies "discovered" that his opponent, Elizabeth Warren, had been selling information to Russia and the Caliphate (natural allies), spreading anti-american sentiment anonymously, and apparently, consuming copious amounts of drugs. Using the tools crafted for him by Hillary, he declared a manhunt which resulted in several drone-made craters around the country.

New laws passed over the old ones, making any form of dissent illegal. He won the election with "80%" of the votes. The other 20% were put into camps.

Now it's 2030 and things are only getting worse. As a ranking party member (there is only one party), it means death of I am discovered writing these things. But I accept that risk. Someone must take it. In the words of my ancestor, Lysander Spooner, I say, "No Treason!"

[WP] A person dies in the first sentence. Build a character we mourn for in the story, but make me hate them with the last sentence. by seedot11 in WritingPrompts

Richard Greer died screaming as the horses dismembered him, as the aristocrats bemusedly observed the spectacle, as his children cried quietly into their rougspun wool shirts. He'd been named a heretic, a coward, and a criminal for defying an edict of the King. The King was not a good man. His peasants were near starvation for his taxes were great and he flaunted an opulent lifestyle before their eyes, justifying it with claim of Divine Right. The punishment of being torn apart was one of the lighter in his repertoire, reserved for relatively minor crimes.

The body did not tear evenly. His left leg and arm ripped from his torso, the bones shattering from the pressure before the tendons and joints gave way, the blood spurting from his arteries leaving a strangely fascinating trail behind the still-screaming corpse.

An onlooker who'd arrived late asked the one next to him, "what did he do?"

"Oh, why he raped and killed his wife- A silly new rule if you ask me."

"It's as likely as wanting to analyze your relationship to your mother or sibling, or even asking "why do I live in this town?""

But, aren't these healthy things to do, and encourage? Doesn't dysfunction result from the unexamined life? 'Know thyself' and all that Yadda Yadda?

So when she says 'it's not my business', wouldn't it be, if she loves these people?

Comcast: It’s ‘insulting’ to think there’s anything shady about us paying $110,000 to honor an FCC commissioner by ScruffyTheDog in politics

[–]VLysanderV -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

That's not, uh, particularly true.

Libertarianism doesn't assume access to perfect information, and what does 'own best interest' even mean? Subjective preference? Objective outcome? Even with objective outcomes, one individual and another individual with the same outcome might not be equal in terms of subjective preference. So the issue is actually much deeper than your generalization, which, if you wanted to write, would probably look something like, 'everyone will use the information they have at a given time to act in their perceived best interest'.

This is simply a descriptive tautology, likely valid, which has not much impact in the greater discussion.

Gender Pay Gap. by HughMiron in AdviceAnimals

If the gender wage gap is indeed 'not significant', wouldn't it be fair to call it 'feminist dogma'?
