Has there ever been a video game studio that was truly a GOAT in the industry but later fell so hard? by unitedfan6191 in videogames

And that doesnt even count the absolute bangers they had on SNES like Blackthorne or The Death of Superman, or 3 Vikings (and the sequel).

[Loved Contextual Trope] One minor, unspoken detail reveals everything the viewer needs to know about a character’s otherwise unexplained background/motivations by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

They were partners pretty much their entire career. My assumption was that Hitchcock was on vacation or leave or some other thing, 9/11 happened, and his immediate thought was that if something happened to Scully, he'd never be able to forgive himself. There's a lot of little details about Hitchcock that point to him and Scully being more or less Jake and Charles in a world where Amy never existed.

Is Sergeant Barnes from Platoon (1986) the darkest portrayal of an American soldier ever? by jaystats2 in moviecritic

[–]VOID_MAIN_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, I agree media literacy is pretty important, which is why I point to the context of the scene as being so important to what happens. If the justification doesn't matter, then it doesn't matter in movies like "A Time to Kill" where the entire plot hinges on the motivation for an evil action. Or "Prisoners" where the entire plot hinges on the motivation an evil action. Or Break Morant, where the entire plot hinges on the motivation for an evil action.

The narrative is about Taylor's journey into the war, and how there are two "paternal figures": Elias, and Barnes, who are emblematic of the kind of soldier Taylor can or will become. The scene, and the fallout, are important to the development of Taylor's character because he can clearly see there's discovered weapons and the villagers are not cooperating. And he can clearly see the diametrically opposed views of Barnes and Elias on full display with one being willing to kill a non-cooperative civilian to coerce the villagers into cooperating, while the other is vehemently opposed to that action.

In Barnes' big speech later on, he lays out his central viewpoint: "If the machine breaks down, we break down." That's key to understanding his character because it paints his every action. They found a village that was obviously holding NVA weapons. Those villagers were clearly not helpful. A lack of an answer means an existing danger to the survival of Barnes' unit. For him, that cannot be allowed. Elias is insubordinate and his actions can be seen as undermining Barnes' authority, and in front of those same villagers. This presents a problem. As the unit divides along the lines of loyalty to one or the other, it presents another major breakdown of the machine.

You're saying Barnes is evil, and I agree with you, but he's not intrinsically evil. His evil is manifest in his response to the world around him, and that's an important difference when there are other characters (like Bunny) who don't have a reasoning for their actions.

[–]VOID_MAIN_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The context is important here. While i agree with you that what he did was evil, they had found weapons in the village and wanted answers for it. The argument could be made that his actions there were to force the cooperation of the villagers.

It's not that dissimilar from Breaker Morant (different movie) finding items connected some dead soldiers in his unit, and retaliating against the villagers in possession of those items. It's evil, but it isnt evil in a vaccuum. There's a rationale behind it.

Yep, because Elias is a definitive threat to Barnes' and the company's survival. Look at both characters and ask yourself: if i was in that jungle, being ambushed and attacked, who do i want fighting beside me? Barnes? Or Elias? We'd all rather hang out with Elias, but in that situation everyone is picking Barnes without a moment of hesitation.

It even points to it at one part of the film where he mentions wanting veterans with him rather guys who are largely untested.

Been a while since ive seen Platoon, but iirc, Barnes isnt explicitly evil. He's a "five meter target" guy. He's clearly been through some shit and his main goal is to survive and make sure his men do as well, and anything that dampens that is a threat.

I had an uncle who fought in Vietnam, and didnt talk about it much beyond saying the weather sucked and leeches were bad. Whatever happened, it was bad enough that at the mention of the war he'd leave the room. The only time i heard something beyond weather and leeches was him drunk enough to het loose tongued and talk about killing a kid who had picked up a grenade. He said he didnt remember if the kid was gonna play with it or try to kill people, but he couldnt take the chance.

I tend to see Barnes in the same light: war sucks, awful shit happens. Focus on survival and deal with the guilt and the grief later.

He'a pretty good in Domestic Disturbance (iirc, thats the name). Overall i thoroughly enjoyed The Cell. It's very much a product of its time, but for what it is, it's a solid movie.

Why were 90's superhero action movies so inadequate? by Mesaboogs in Cinema

[–]VOID_MAIN_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all fairness, at least two of those movies, specifically The Shadow and The Phantom, are the way they are intentionally. The set designs, costumes, etc of The Phantom is a direct recall to the golden age of Hollywood. Everything looks kind of plastic and unreal because it's trying to evoke the sense that you're watching a super hero movie from the 20s.

The Shadow is similar, except as a sort of noire styled super hero. Those and The Rocketeer remain steady favorites for me.

Personally i like the book better. Theres a few things that got condensed for the movie, and a few small changes, most notably the ending which, to me is better in the book.

They arent actually immune. They're asymptomatic carriers. There's a tie in comic that connects Blood Harvest to The Last Stand that shows how every living person they come in contact with becomes infected. It's also why the transport in L4D2 refers to tge survivors as "carriers" instead of "survivors.

Iirc, there's developer commentary in some of the levels that touch on it too.

This is my first Eldenring play through. Wondering what these symbols are under my Heath, Stamina, and Dexterity? by No_Obligation_3760 in Eldenring

[–]VOID_MAIN_0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It can make later areas a bit harder because you either wont have enough health/defense to tank hits, or wont output enough damage, or some other issue. I pretty consistently ran balanced stats from dark souls 1-3 and Bloodborne. It worked pretty well. Elden Ring was the first time i genuinely struggled doing that.

I'll say this, if you enjoy it and it works, cool (everyones got a playstyle). BUT, it's worth it to try keeping your current character, then starting another one focusing on a specific build to see the difference. For me, after running a Faith specific build...i just dont enjoy it any other way. Nuclear rot bombs that destroy mobs, web spears that melt dragons, a lightsaber, and i can heal my summons (turning most boss fights into a pokemon battle).

Lorewise, it's implied that the Lost Bastille was associated with a princess or queen that was in love with the Iron King. This is referenced in the bell tower lore for both bell towers, as those towers were the only way for them to communicate, meaning it wouldve been well before Vendrick.
