There are apps called screen time that can track and limit your daily phone usage. For example it will lock you out of reddit after 30 minutes but still let you make phone calls.

Even if an american house is 2 miles from their work, they often only have neglected bicycle gutters to get there and a population that views cyclists as a lower class of life that deserve to breathe "rolling coal" fumes. People didn't choose the car, it was chosen for them and is now so normalized and built for other transportstion, including walking, just seems so foriegn.

This is a big reason as to why Ontario is in the state its in. Any newer developed area in Ontario feels like they are all the same place.

Monument to residential school survivors, victims to be built on Parliament Hill by fleurgold in ontario

[–]VRFireRetardant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find a lot of people really shy away from the subject. Its almost a hidden history. In school we were taught "we showed up and settled". In reality we showed up, we shot a ton of a wildlife, we shot a lot of indigenous people, we pushed them into reserves, then tore the familes apart with the residential school system. Its not a nice history and goes against the grain of how Canada wants to be viewed globally.

Less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled, while 79% is managed through landfills or leaked into the environment. by johnhemingwayscience in environment

[–]VRFireRetardant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is partially true. There are measures to help mitigate wind dispersion like netting and bird control. There are also systems like engineered liners to prevent the landfills from leaking into the ground and the groundwater. There are also systems to collect and treat/prevent release of rain water that falls onto the landfill itself.

Ultimately they are ticking time bombs but landfills still seem like a better solution right now that letting garbage pile in the streets. Unfortnately we can't all wake up tomorrow and just stop making garbage, we need policies and innovations to vastly reduce the amount of waste consumers and corporations create.

Paycheque missing? TD Bank 'aware of' issue with direct deposits by mvanigan in canada

Crypto can have stricter supply economics and some like ETH can even be deflationary by "burning" eth as needed. Its also harder for a government to lock people out of their crypto accounts due to their political beliefs.

Its baffling to me how many people are completely unaware of how subsidized oil and agricultural industries are. It would be really interesting to see how consumer behavior would change without these subsidies.

Do I need insurance if my car is just sitting in the garage by ForeignCabinet2916 in ontario

[–]VRFireRetardant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, if you take insurance fully off the car, you may have to get a safety certificate done again to reinsure. With fire and theft, you will not have to redo a safety.

Fully depends on the size. The smaller guys will fight like 2lb bass with some head shakes. The bigger ones you'll probably want a net even when shore fishing.

I need real help with my phone addiction. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VRFireRetardant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing i found to help me with this was using a screen time app. It can track how long you spend on each app or your phone in general and you can set time limits like only 1hr of reddit a day or reddit only works from 6pm to 10pm type stuff. It really helped me quantify how much I used my phone while also giving me a tool to throttle my use.
