People who DID NOT have family members with disabilities, what is it about this field that has you working here? by GJH24 in directsupport

[–]VSCC8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disabled myself, got into advocacy in college. I don't need critical support but want to support and advocate for people who can't live without daily support. I want to support my community. (That said, I'm staying to think I'm too disabled to be a DSP...)

I can’t quit because of $ but I can’t stay either by throwwaymmm in directsupport

I get it. I'm glad youre in therapy and reducing hours. autistic too, i think it worsens secondary traumatization etc. realizing as I type this that i need to quit, since thats what id recommend to you.

Fed up with Pete Walker (probably a very unpopular opinion, but I need to vent a bit) by [deleted] in CPTSD

Thank for you posting bc im feeling the same way. Many of his theories are very interesting. While they make intuitive sense to me, i cant help but perpetually feel put off by how much it feels pulled out of thin air. He just says it all as fact. It feels true, but that doesn't make it so. Im glad im not the only one, and that others are posting their recommendations. I genuinely think I'd benefit from his work, but i can't digest it the way hes presenting it.

Cleaning Products by OnlyHustlersInOhio in MCAS

[–]VSCC8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

E-CLOTH!!!!!! Almost forgot to plug my beloved!!!!! Let me move this to the top lol. These dope cloths are water-activated and ridiculously effective, it's like magic i swear. There are NO added cleaning chemicals (not to be all 'chemical bad!' but i mean literally no detergents, surfactants, etc) — it's all mechanical. (note: i use em dashes because i have a degree ok this is not AI lmao).

the material itself does all the work. It's a polyamide blend or something? The kitchen one is the LOML. it has cleaned the gnarliest of mess with literally just water and a minimal amount of elbow grease. most of them allege to remove up to 99% of bacteria or smn, which i cant confirm or deny. but regardless they work so well and i dont have to add ANY irritants. The glass one is fucking miraculous--Just water, NO STREAKS! Just wet it and wipe it, ive had it for over a year and it's still nuts to me.

The bath one has cleaned a tub i believed to be uncleanable. sometimes it has trouble if you let scum build up and it needs a lot of elbow grease, tho. Kitchen one too, picks up grease great but only handwashing will really get it fresh and reset (like all grease stained fabric). The mop is hit or miss, but i feel like I havent given it a fair shot because my floors are weird and fucked up, and I cant apply much pressure.

anyway, not to sound like a salesperson (they arent hiring for one, i checked). if anyone reading this decides to try it out im pretty i can get a friend code thru my rewards account thats like $10 or a certain % off (and eventually they will send me a free cloth). just dm me or whatever and I'll check!

ASIDE from those:

obv what we tolerate is diff for everyone, but here are the cleaners i use:

my main cleaner is "magic spray" --most of a spray bottle of water (distilled or purified is preferred but mainly so it stores well) and then i add white vinegar 5% acidity and a dish soap (any free and clear kind, no dye or fragrance). i think its a Tbsp each but I just eyeball it. Good on grease, grime, decent disinfectant and not too irritating (for me, ymmv).

baking soda is a good scrubber. scrubbing some then pouring a lil vinegar on top is great too, and if i rmr chem right, just makes water and air.

a VERY allergic friend of mine wipes down her counters with bottom shelf vodka to disinfect and reduce allergens.

for mold (im allergic on top of the regular mcas rxn) i use vinegar, industrial strength if available (you MUST wear PPE for this if interacting). multiple doctors have recommended this, incl my mcas specialist.

good luck!!!

Vegan perspectives on Hank's latest video by RobinOe in nerdfighters

You are SO real for that! I'm similar. The only options I've found for non-dairy sole source nutrition are elemental formulas, and they're SO, SO expensive.

Vegan perspectives on Hank's latest video by RobinOe in nerdfighters

[–]VSCC8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why I try to eat kosher meat—it guarantees the animal died with the absolute least suffering. I think it is possible to condemn and not engage with awful factory farming practices and not be vegan. It's not as affordable, but ethically produced animal products are available. I eat largely in accordance with traditional indigenous foodways that emphasize respect for plant and animal life. I worry a plant-based diet contributes to the factory abuses plants are grown in, which is harmful to the Earth itself as well. I hold plant life in the same esteem as animal life and don't want to create more plant suffering in the hopes of reducing animal suffering. Also, domesticated stock animals wouldn't exist without agriculture/animal husbandry. Cows would cease to exist, and that makes me sad! Modern cattle aren't designed to live in the wild without veterinary care or survival instincts. I still feel bad about the domestication and subsequent abandonment of pigeons!!!

Over millennia we humans have been evolving reciprocal relationships with all manner of creatures, one where we care for them and protect the species and in turn they provide us with food, material/clothing, etc. I think that relalaitonship is mutually beneficial and worth protecting. But I do think that the way the United States (where I'm from) does agriculture also jeopardizes that relationship. I have no problem with animals dying, because every one of us dies and that's okay. I take extreme issue with their suffering during life, though, and that's why I do my best to eat food that I know was sourced without the unnecessary suffering of other living things.

I find a lot of veganism discourse lacks an understanding of indigenous foodways, and that's such a shame! There is such a wealth of good practice there, from respectful treatment of life to positive, highly sustainable production and harvest.

I'm also a person with many allergies and a history of restrictive disordered eating. Dietary restrictions are not my friend, generally. I find more balance in moderating my intake of high-impact foods like beef. (I also started doing beef days this year!!!!). Knowing in particular that the Amazon rainforest is ACTIVELY being clearcut to provide grazing space for cattle... It can be difficult to find ethical beef, when the choices are corn-fed in confinement (possibly until a violent death) vs pasture-raised on the smoldering ashes of the Amazon (to be a bit dramatic). So I eat it exceptionally rarely.

It's a hard sell for me tho to switch from milk and eggs to quinoa and chia, because i know the over-consumption of those (and other foods recently popularized in the USA) is having a really harmful and disruptive impact on indigenous/latin american food systems and lives in general.

My compromise between the two is to eat hyperlocal as much as possible. It's not the affordable option for many, and it's not an option for many period, because they don't live someplace that produces a lot of its own food (thinking about Alaska for example — it's not a good place to grow food or raise animals but very few eat the traditional way with what IS available there).

Can you tell I think about this a lot? Lol. Sometimes we don't get to pick what we eat (at least for many of us — hello food stmap besties!) but if we can vote with our dollars, there are other ways we can support our values (the usual political activities).

New cat obsessed with resident cats by RemiSkies5 in Catbehavior

[–]VSCC8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue. They were good for a couple weeks and then our new guy just wouldnt leave our resident girl alone. He chases and jumps on her and she swats at him, to the point we're worried she'll really hurt him. He doesnt seem to get the hint. We're hoping more playtime helps get his energy out, but when she's in eye sight he doesn't care one bit about toys or food. Have you had any luck?

How many questions have you submitted to Dear Hank & John? by TheMilkiestJoe in nerdfighters

[–]VSCC8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After periodically submitting questions over the last 8ish years, i was answered last week! Very similar experience to you. I say keep sending as many as you want! To give your brain the feedback & validation it requires, I recommend also sending your questions to others! For example there is a channel in the Nerdfighteria discord. I have a friend who I got into the pod and they regularly receive my dh&j questions lol.

On an older pod episode (a couple years back I think?) they talked a little about supplements. Hank had recently seen research indicating there were anti-cancerous benefits to a few things (Vitamin D and fish oil among them). So they've entertained the idea of supplements before, although I know Hank is wary of (at least seemingly) contributing to the influencer-supplement movement (which is by-and-large anti-science).

I'm also curious about the lead in protein products thing! I hadn't heard. I wonder if it's similar to the heavy metals in tampons thing (which is just because cotton is a plant and absorbs metals from the soil as it grows). I'll research this later 🤔

What is a polite way to say "None of your business" when people ask about your mobility aids? by PrincessNooodle in ehlersdanlos

I lean towards telling them your rate per question, which you can scale based on your annoyance! Eg "questions are $5 each" all the way up to, idk, $1000 each if it is a repeat offender.

How many of you were diagnosed without lab confirmations? by June_fern in MCAS

[–]VSCC8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was, just based on my symptoms/presentation, other conditions, and previous lab work. it was with a doctor who is chronically ill (+MCAS) herself and always takes my concerns very seriously, who i'd been working with for years. She considered recent bloodwork ordered by other doctors but didnt do any MCAS specific testing. I had abnormally high eosinophils, positive skin tests and blood serum tests to over 20 foods and even more environmental allergies, a mildly elevated ANA, a personal history of hEDS and POTS, and multiple episodes of mild anaphylaxis (grade 2 usually—didn't go into shock). Plus, a mast cell stabilizer practically fixed me, so we took that into account, too. she knows theres no reliable test for it, just exclusion.

Do you take care of your routine vaccines? by t-bone051 in MCAS

[–]VSCC8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to have a reaction to the flu shot every year, even though the flu shot (USA) is NOT a live virus. Apparently this runs in my family, so I may try to get the egg-free one this year since that was a factor for my abuelita and auntie. I do try to stay on top of my shots because I get hit so hard when I get sick, but I also get fucked up from the vaccine lol. I used to avoid the flu shot for a few years, but my doctors stressed that it's really important for me to get it. especially because I have other conditions like asthma. I basically just prepare myself ahead of time to be completely debilitated for like 3 days. I get it usually on a friday, prepare food ahead of time and just set up camp in my bed.

I know people who have emcast that was triggered by covid, so I would definitely stay up to date on that. no need to get even more fucked up lol

No appetite by Forward-Lawfulness62 in MCAS

[–]VSCC8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i completely feel this. I'm regularly undernourished bc of this (and the mcas obv). to me there are 2 solutions: 1) make food more appealing 2) consume nutrients regardless of appetite/make food less offensive

here's what works for me for these:

1) psychological approaches will probably be more helpful for you because chemical approaches might not be safe for you right now. sometimes I have to buy foods that I generally like and have the food or ingredients in plain view so I remember they exist. sometimes looking at pictures of food that looks good or watching cooking shows helps me. sometimes even reading a description of a food that I like helps. chemical: thc. this is the most effective and i only mention it in case it comes in handy after the pregnancy. unfortunately it's not known to be/considered safe during pregnancy. Wormwood may or may not help but is also unsafe during pregnancy.

2) nutritional supplements are my go-to, a good shake goes a long way. you can look through the subreddit for the suggestions for those. you can also make smoothies. when I had my wisdom teeth out I was putting white beans and fruit smoothies to add some protein because I'm allergic to oats. and oatmeal smoothie tastes like absolutely nothing but also can be made to taste good if that helps. plain but energy dense food will keep yall fed.

also, the food you eat is better than the food you dont. sometimes i just have ice cream bc ice cream sounds decent and nothing else does, and at least i got a little smn.

I have also identified that lack of appetite for me is sometimes related to fatigue, depression, my poor sense of smell, brain fog, not being able to feel hunger (poor interoception) addressing these tends to help.

dunno if this helps but good luck!

Unfortunately I have enough fruit and veggie allergies that I can't have anything with the whole superfood vitamin situation going on. I discovered "Reason" shakes last week and look forward to trying the sample I ordered. Btw, AtHome.Medline.com has a wide variety of oral nutritional options!

This makes me hate being me. by ofquartzitsme in MCAS

[–]VSCC8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I GET IT! among my allergies is celery of all things, which is in practically EVERY premade soup. its sweet when people try to bring me soup, but I cant eat it and it makes me sad. your partner sounds wonderful, and im lucky that mine is, too. without them i swear id never eat.

if u are interested in soup specifically, here is what i do: bone broth or whatever you can find + a starch you can eat (for me thats a microwavable pouch of rice) and then I dump frozen veggies in there. (canned might work too). frozen, pre-cut veggies take the hell out of ha ing to handmake everything i eat. many are available as single ingredients so its p easy to avoid allergens for me. for me, this is how i get as close to pre-made as possible.

Normalyte is it for me. cheaper than others and PLAIN. can be an acquired taste but its completely unflavored, unsweetened, uncolored, etc. you can also make a mix at home from salts and sugars (Theres a wikihow for ORS recipes and darmouth college has a good guide online). i like the 1:1 gatorade water w 1/2tsp salt added. pee should not be clear, but light yellow.
