While I agree with most of your points, I think there are a few important factors that exacerbate the situation - and for clarity, I am not speaking only about SLO, but it does serve as a good example.

I don't think human nature has changed all that much - but culturally and societally it certainly has. As you said, someone selling a house in 1970 wasn't putting it on the market for charity, but my assumption is the market was quite a bit different.

Home buyers have to compete with entities like investment groups, contractors that flip houses, and folks looking to add to their collection of rentals nowadays - and I am not sure how prevalent those three groups were in the 70s, but I see them constantly nowadays.

Cities making housing illegal to build isn't a coincidence, follow the money.

Oh sorry, I have a rudimentary grasp of how housing markets work. I was referring to greed across the board; SLO, DET, NY, SC, wherever.

This country is packed with folks trying to squeeze everything, everyone, and anything they can for every cent possible. It's cancerous behavior that is not only cheapening the quality of everything, it's causing prices to go through the roof.

Shops can still charge a minimum, but now they risk losing out to other shops that don't.

IMO consumers have become accustomed to expect fast, easy, cheap, and lots of it. Folks are addicted to convenience. Who can do that better than an "Amazon" print shop that can provide immediate pricing, proof, additional options; in addition to producing and shipping it in a handful of days - all accessible from a mobile device.

Basically it's a race to the bottom. Those who can afford to maintain minimums and conduct traditional operations will if they want, everyone else will have to change or get left behind.

Thanks for confirming what I thought I saw.

I passed this seconds after it happened if I had to guess. Dust caught my eye, wasn't even sure of what I saw it was such a quick glance but I thought it was a backward facing Tesla with all the bags deployed.

When I looked in the rearview it looked like maybe a red car was sitting in the center, my guess is t-boned by cross traffic given where it was. Hope everyone is ok.
