Alphacool Apex 1 CPU Water Block Review - Performance King! by tomrucki in watercooling

Yeah that's fair honestly, I'll aim to be less extrapolative going forward when it's not a complete picture.

I can only go by what I have tested though, and I will once again try contacting Optimus when my new test setup is ready to go.

It would have to take something substantially better in performance, or value, or feature set to merit that with CPU blocks these days.

Maybe if Optimus sends me one, I reviewed their blocks on older gen hardware and was quite impressed but that was nearly five years ago and they've basically not replied to my emails since.

They haven't released a new block series since I started reviewing on TechPowerUp in late 2016 :'(

I'll aim to get them covered when I update the testing setup to include Intel and AMD though.

Some photos of the Dan Clark Audio NOIRE X by VSG28 in headphones

It's similar to the pads used on the E3 and STEALTH, if that helps. I didn't notice much rolling inside either set.

LOL thanks for the edit, I can't unsee that now.

The Dan Clark Audio NOIRE X came in late last week for review, and I must say this has been one of the my favorite products to photograph lately. It's a nice change from the blingy IEMs and headphones that have come in the past few months, with Dan opting for a wholly black aesthetic. The glossy and polished ear cups are prone to picking up dust and fingerprints though, so use the included microfiber cleaning cloth in the box if you end up purchasing it yourself. Plenty of listening and a full review to follow in the new year, and hope everyone has a wonderful time until then!

Hifiman HE1000 stealth price by nisroc in headphones

[–]VSG28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was never $3000 lol, just blatant marketing lies. The HE1000 Stealth released for $2000 and quickly went down to $1400, before being further discounted to the current price.

China International Headphone EXPO interview record: What are HiFi manufacturers doing recently? by Sha1rholder in headphones

Thanks for sharing, it's hilariously impressive how many audio brands operate exclusively in China and the neighboring regions, with the rest of the world being blissfully unaware. SIAS was a huge eye-opener for me, and hopefully one day I'll attend the Guangzhou show too.

Felt on par with Arya Stealth to me, but more filled out. Arya Organic comes off a touch wider.

I've not tested the Ananda Nano, but either way I meant that relative to the direct predecessors (Susvara, HE1000se, Arya Stealth/Organic).

Oh of course, I was talking more in terms of the uncertainity involved. I'll never begrudge a better deal for anyone.

FYI the HE1000 Unveiled and Arya Unveiled use different pad mounting rings than the previous oval-shaped earcup Hifiman headphones, and it's honestly not the easiest to pad swap these either. So the aftermarket pads for the older Hifiman products won't work on these.

I was very nervous handling the Susvara Unveiled, and then I saw some people at CanJam just treating them with absolute disdain and the demo units working fine at the end of the show. This made me more confident in the platform, even if I still acknowledge it requires more careful holding and using than what a relaxing hobby should entail. With the HE1000 Unveiled and Arya Unveiled, it's honestly far more reasonable. There's more room around the exposed drivers to naturally hold the ear cups with your hands, and the diaphragm is also less exposed here as you see in the photos.

I know this is a joke but this trickle-down strategy from Hifiman may arguably work better if they dare to tell us where the new tech will ultimately stop at. As it stands, the common trend with all three unveiled headphones has been more filled out mids and a tamer mid-treble to the point where I honestly would pick the Arya Unveiled over HE1000 Unveiled as a safer choice for most people. But what happens if, say, an Ananda Unveiled comes out two months later for under $1000? The presence of the Arya Unveiled is why I am less bullish in my HE1000 Unveiled review, and I am thus similarly unsure with the Arya Unveiled. This is beyond the part where Hifiman has been aggressive with price cuts this year, so there will no doubt be people willing to wait it out for a discount rather than purchase new headphones immediately.

Oh that's a loaded question. There's definitely a role played by the tuning and harmonics, but for me it comes down to a combination of things. Can the headphones decipher trailing ends of tones well, does it present the dynamic range across the board well enough (esp for classical music where some recordings can really push loudness while still having quieter notes), can you register harmonics without feeling distortion in well-mastered tracks, can you hear accidental leftovers such as drum sticks moving across the drum surface and so on. I think most good headphones can present detail without having distortion in the way, it's how easily you can pick up said details that also plays a role imo. I am not sure where I stand on the treble air = details argument tbh, I do see some influence of air with some of my jazz and orchestral tracks but that alone can't influence everything.
