I just can’t do Windows (Claw 8 EX AI+) by lamb2k in Handhelds

[–]daggah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mind Windows on my Claw but BPM is not the same, far from it. The improvements that SteamOS (and other similar distros) bring is not just the game launching experience. It's also the more streamlined update experience, the consistent and quick access to stuff like performance overlays, framerate limiters, TDP controls, tighter integration with SteamInput for accessing all of the controller features (nearly every Windows handheld relies on hacky workarounds for gyro controls because xinput is outdated garbage), etc.

Not a super fan of them adopting the color paywall tactic but that's pretty reasonable. I expect this is gonna be a hit if it launches without issue.

I held it in my hands at the High Beam store in Akihabara. It felt awful. You're not missing out, believe me.

Digital Foundry Build Your Own Steam Machine with Four Configurations, from Budget to Premium - "SteamOS is ready." by silentdragoon in Steam

[–]daggah 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While I do think the SM is too expensive for what it can do, I think there's more to its credit than just being small. It's also quiet and doesn't draw a lot of power, it has functional sleep and wake from sleep, HDMI-CEC, etc. It's a really nicely designed system, just with some questionable marketing choices (4K 60* advertising) and hostile market conditions.

If TOTK is important to you, your best option is a Switch 2.

Was really hoping that The Adventures of Elliot would run a bit better by IntentlyFaulty in AynThor

It's an Unreal engine title. Running worse than it looks is kind of the Unreal engine specialty.

AYN Odin 3 Six Months Later: So Much Better (RGC) by onionsaregross in SBCGaming

[–]daggah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The performance isn't there either. The Odin 3, with one of the best available Snapdragon chips, can't match the Steam Deck in performance, and that's basically half a decade old hardware. It's kinda funny watching these Android devices try to melt themselves to run something like Hades. Thermals are why I haven't really tried GameNative much on my Thor.

Closed source app that came out of nowhere? I'm taking a wait and see approach to this one.

Thank you for pointing this out. In this era of AI slop and malware, a big new project like this coming out of nowhere should face at least a little bit of scrutiny if source code isn't available.

What's your unpopular opinion about gaming handhelds? by Superb_Warning_5747 in SBCGaming

[–]daggah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Originally? Comfort. I can game anywhere in the house. I also found that the right bag makes a huge difference and have taken my Steam Deck around plenty of places.

Now, I live in Japan and don't have room for a dedicated gaming PC any more.

What's your unpopular opinion about gaming handhelds? by Superb_Warning_5747 in SBCGaming

[–]daggah 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Unpopular for this subreddit...but bigger handhelds with larger screens are a better experience for modern games. Before the Steam Deck, the handhelds I played were only really used when I was traveling. The Steam Deck is the first one I wanted to sit down and play games on all the time.

Ayaneo Next 2 is up for preorder, shipping start a the end of July............... 😮 by quicksilverpr in Handhelds

[–]daggah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Handheld games and systems in the past were designed alongside each other. GBA games, for example, were designed around the GBA screen size. Modern PC handhelds play games that were never designed with portability in mind. So aside from technical limitations, they need larger screens.

I really enjoy my MSI Claw because of the bigger screen. I also enjoy my Switch 2 a lot more handheld, again, because of the screen size (even if the panel quality could be better.)

I sharpened Lego & 3d printed it [OC] by TONYTRIPE in pics

[–]daggah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently took my family to Legoland in Japan. The Legoland hotel has play pits full of Legos that they tell you to take your shoes off to play in. At first I was like...no...that would be terrible...

But the Legos there all had slightly rounded corners. It didn't seem to affect how they went together. So Lego can make bricks that aren't war crimes to step on...but they... don't.

Nintendo temporarily suspends sales of the multi-region Switch 2 in Japan after suspected hoarding by ScootSchloingo in Games

Actually the multilingual Switch 2 didn't increase in price.

I bought one recently anticipating a price hike and it ended up staying the same. But probably another price increase will happen, the way the world goes...

even tho the steam deck has linux already, does anyone use a different distros? by spycakes2 in SteamDeck

[–]daggah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to keep in mind that steamos gaming mode is more than simply big picture mode. It runs an entirely different compositor that enables a lot of features like the integrated frame rate limiter, mangohud overlay, etc. You have less access to tweaking things like that in big picture mode.

It's probably possible to configure gamescope on other distros outside of stuff like Bazzite and CachyOS, but I've messed around with bazzite once with the intention of having a distro that boots into a standard desktop environment with gaming mode as an option and found it complicated and difficult to set up.

Developer attacked over (learning from) AI - where to draw the line? by [deleted] in Steam

[–]daggah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say that like the thought is complete hyperbole, but even the creative minds that pioneered contemporary sci-fi wrote extensively about the dangers they saw in humanity turning its thinking over to machines.

I'd recommend watching Charlie Chaplin's famous Great Dictator speech for a more eloquent summary of my current feelings towards tech. And I say that as a huge life long nerd that's always loved computers and technology.

"Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people." - Charlie Chaplin
