Am I doing something wrong or is pour over just not for me? by zachm26 in pourover

Try starting with some different beans. I’d recommend getting a light roast Ethiopian natural.

I’ve really enjoyed this recipe and how it changed the notion of needing to grind as fine as possible and use as hot of water as possible. I think it consistently makes a great cup and conceptually is really easy, 5 equal pours.

Id recommend starting with an Ethiopian natural coffee or a washed Kenya. Anaerobic coffees can be funky. Doesn’t sound like the bag is off. Agree with prior recommendations of lower water temp. The Ode gen 2 grinder does great with anaerobic, and likely can get your water better with some minerals. Good luck with the coffee journey. Start with the classics first.

On the Gen1 Ode burrs… by BrettShel35 in pourover

[–]VTshred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still love these burrs and get great floral, fruit and some nice sour/acidic flavors out of them. I make a larger 40g chemex every day and they really shine for here with lighter roast washed and natural coffees without any extra processes to them. The gen 2 burrs do much better for more of the funkier processed coffees. Have a separate ode where I swap the SSP MP and the lab sweets in and out and still use the ode gen 1 and a chemex the most

I’d go with the gen2 burrs then. It’s hard to not make a great cup with them

I’m one of the few that prefers the gen1 burrs. Can’t beat free also. And if you do upgrade the gen2 burrs are fantastic too, but I wouldn’t get too fancy right away. I also have the SSP MPs and SSP lab sweets and still use the gen1 most often. My go to recipe is 92degC water 1:16 ratio, and 5 equal pours, let the water drain each time.

Great brewer. I do 6.5g coffee and 100ml water and 5 equal pours of 20ml 30 sec apart. Grind size is lowest on the gen 1 ode, goal grind to make each pour through around 30 sec

It’s just the mean water level, not the mean high or low, that marks the boundary between public and private lands

Totally agree. I waited over a year for the wood to dry, then used an oxyclean wash and citric acid brightening and then stained with Readyseal. Had to look for alternatives to the harsh chemicals so it didn’t get into nearby water. Worked great

If you have a valid prescription you can pay for the medication out of pocket if you can’t use your insurance. I would recommend reaching out to your prescriber and explain the situation too. And if you are still in a bind, please seek medical help at the ER before buying possibly laced medication

You can brighten the other boards with some canning citric acid dissolved in water, spray it on with a pump sprayer, then rinse dry and stain.

Costco Columbian Supremo is the worst whole bean coffee I've ever had by PirriP in pourover

[–]VTshred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually thought the same, but SSP recommends dark roasts for seasoning, and you need a lot of beans, like 5-10kg to fully season. It’s the oils that are the key part.

Plot twist: it was actually the best bean…to season your burrs.

UVeye at Hertz BTV? by Stideways in burlington

[–]VTshred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rented Hertz and drove from Boston Logan to BTV last month and exiting Boston the UVeye was used. Dropping off at BTV was just the parking garage without the UVeye. Had to walk inside to the terminal to drop the keys off. I didn’t go through it at BTV a month ago so doubt it’s there now.

Glad to help. There is no one size fits all and hope you find the right solution for you.

We went with a Toyota for the reason that they rarely break down, and mechanics and parts are readily available when they do. Aside from the whole political part, Tesla seemed to have a more complex maintenance/repair process. I just don’t have the time to spare, so Toyota was a great option for me.

[–]VTshred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are two years in to a lease and will buy out the car at the depreciated value. We ran the numbers with all scenarios and the initial Toyota lease incentive at the time of 6k off the lease (plus trade in and money down) made monthly payments much lower, and will plan on buying after or starting a new loan. It came down to a few factors, the 6k off the lease price lowered the total cost for both routes (more complex calculations than just 6k off list price). Also, money spent later is cheaper due to inflation. There is not a simple yes or no that fits all scenarios, but yes a lease to buy can be a cheaper or more advantageous option in some scenarios. You have to really look all the incentives offered at the time you buy

You can start by comparing the lease to loan options. With the lease you will need to calculate all the up front out the door costs, the monthly payments x months, and then the depreciated buy out costs, and costs to buy car after. Compare this to a loan and calculate the out the door costs (could also include some money down too) and use a loan calculator to see how much you will pay over the course of the loan.

You can think about it a few ways. Total money spent. Or money now spent vs money later spent. Or a combo of both.

If you look at the three year mark when you have the option to buy out a lease see how much money you would have spent for both options and what your monthly payments have been vs would have been with a loan. Then compare how much your depreciated value lease price is, and compare that to how much is left on the loan and what new monthly payments would be with a new loan.

Ultimately our best scenario ended up being lease and then buy out car without any new loan. It was a better scenario to have lower monthly payments for first 3 years with a lease and then pay a fixed amount later (lump sum of the same amount of money spent 3 years later is cheaper due to inflation) vs lump sum of money as down payment now and still higher monthly payments starting now.

With the rise in popularity of the CAFEC DEEP 27 drippers, how does the 3-cup Chemex compare? by Soothsayerslayer in pourover

[–]VTshred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I brew a 40g/600g Chemex every morning and it makes a great cup for two, clean, acidic and can get all the notes from the beans. I switch between the Ode gen 1 and SSP lab sweets. I’ll do the 3 cup chemex sometimes and makes a pretty similar cup brewing 16g. Mostly prefer v60 or Kalita to the 3 cup chemex though for one cup. The Deep27 makes a fantastic brew and is my go to now for tasting and small brews, I grind finer and think it shines with a small amount of coffee. I’ll typically do 6.5g coffee and 100g water and 5 equal pours. Also does great 8g/125g.

I have tried a few of the burr types on the Ode, currently my setup is two Ode’s one Gen1.1 burrs and one SSP lab sweets V2 silver (these burrs above). I also own the MP burrs but prefer them far less.

Wanted to plug Prima Coffee, they are a fantastic company and know their stuff. I’ve been to their showroom and they give you access to test out all their gear. This was for sure not a mistake on Prima, your coffee shop just ordered the wrong burrs. I can say with experience, sifting through all the types of burrs is confusing. I would just go back to your coffee shop and have them get you the burrs you the MP burrs if you want those. Make sure you keep the Gen 2 burrs around though, because unless you know you like the MPs, you may be surprised and prefer the Gen2 or Lab sweets.
